Huge thing, it is. Hung from two of the upstairs windows. I HATE that. It makes the whole street look horrid. I know that might make me sound like a knob, but it just looks so tacky. My DB has just nipped over, and when I told him I hated the look of it, he laughed and said I was being a snob. Am I?

It is DIRECTLY opposite my front window, every time I look out, it is there, looming!

How dare someone in England hang an England flag, firebomb their house at once, they have no sense so pride to befoul their home with such tat....

It is football world cup, I think you need to get over yourself, there will be more then one or two about I am sure.

EdgarAllenPoll · 05/05/2010 18:33

so ok, if you have a flagpole...flag = classy

if you don't have a flagpole, flag = chav?

anyone on Mumsnet got a flagpole?

southeastastra · 05/05/2010 18:34

there is one flagpole round here, they fly the smilie face off it - like this think they're old ravers.

Tanee58 · 05/05/2010 18:36

It's not the flag itself, it's the connotations. And OP's neighbour sounds like a nice piece of work And they DO look better on a flagpole. And half the time, they're hung upside down! Round here, we have a lot of Greek flags when they play, but no one feels intimidated. Sadly, the Union Jack DOES intimidate. And it's a shame. Perhaps we should all hang one out, and reclaim it for all!

foureleven · 05/05/2010 18:37

Oh wow, I am in awe of the smiley face flag on pole. Now that is something I can get on board with!!

I have now got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach thinking of how I will sit down to Easteneders after a hard days graft and putting the kids down only to find it has been replaced by a bunch of overpaid bellends in shorts. Vomit.

SoupDragon · 05/05/2010 18:40

I think what makes it tacky is that they're not displaying them in a patriotic sense but in an "En-ger-lund" fashion.

I'm all for a display of patriotism but the whole footy thing always has connotations of the fans' appaling behaviour when abroad.

RunawayWife · 05/05/2010 18:43

For fucks sake, it is people like you lot that make the Bloody Nasty Party look normal
Last time I looked this was still England
flying our flag is not a sinful thing, also the St. George flag is the ENGLISH flag, and the Union Jack is only the union jack if flown at sea on land it is the union flag, and if people living in England do not like seeing the England flag flying then it is a sorry place to live, I am always amazed by how many flags I see in other counteys and you don't get a bunch of idiots shouting Racist/ chavvy or what ever, every other place I have ever been fly their flag with pride.

mumblechum · 05/05/2010 18:44

Our next door neighbours have put an England flag up in their front garden and both dh and ds assumed they'd gone a bit racist till I patiently explained that there is a World Cup this year to which dh said, Not again!!!

Did anyone see that Tesco are selling their hot cross buns as St George buns now

foureleven · 05/05/2010 18:45

Mumblechum, can i swap your dh for mine this summer please?!

Tanee58 · 05/05/2010 18:52

RunawayWife, sorry, I wandered off course there a little (though the UJ IS often flown upside down) - I was doing dual thinking due to pre-election exhaustion. The point is, that the cross of St George has been so often hijacked by BNP types, that it has unpleasant connotations - people DO see it as intimidating. It shouldn't be so, but it IS.

onagar · 05/05/2010 18:53

I don't like football and I do think flags hanging out of windows look untidy, but I do think it's mad to object to our own flag.

I'm tempted to get one now just to annoy people.

Tanee58 · 05/05/2010 18:54

And speaking of inappropriate marketing, why do hot cross buns come into the shops straight after Christmas? And remain after Good Friday?

Tanee58 · 05/05/2010 18:55

Maybe we should all fly a St George (he was Greek, btw) and reclaim it from the footies and racists...

EdgarAllenPoll · 05/05/2010 18:58

there is one flagpole round here, they fly the smilie face off it - like this think they're old ravers.

i like that somehow...i've seen lots of houses flying pirate flags too. the occasional (very neatly presented!) house flying rainbow flags....

My brother has a huge union flag that hangs over his bed in his shoebox flat in Japan...
well, to be honest, it covers the whole of the ceiling...

flootshoot · 05/05/2010 18:58

YABU to dislike it now. You will not, however, be unreasonable to dislike it if it is still there in 3 summer's time, greying and ragged, like the hideous thing on my mum's street.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 05/05/2010 19:02

Flag on flagpole is nice
anything hanging out of window looks nasty

op yanbu

pagwatch · 05/05/2010 19:02

I would only have a flagpole if I had a cannon to fire when it is raised and lowered.

I think if English people feel that the St Georges flag has been hijacked by the BNP etc, it is their duty ( and everyone elses duty) to reclaim it as a symbol of national pride rather than racist scummery.

I will go and buy one.
And a cannon

EdgarAllenPoll · 05/05/2010 19:07

i wondered if it was possible buy a cannon over the web, and oh look, it actually is!

catchy music too

Tanee58 · 05/05/2010 19:14

Thanks EAP! Great music! - I have placed my order...

RunawayWife · 05/05/2010 19:15

I have yet to meet anyone intimidated by our flag

Tanee58 · 05/05/2010 19:27

oh RW, it's not the flag, it's some of the characters who display it - and what it symbolises to them. Which is why perhaps we all need to reclaim it.

LaBellaSantaCatarinadiSienna · 05/05/2010 19:31

I thought it was illegal to fly an England flag unless there was an event at the time (and I would have thought you'd be pushing it to say you were flying it for the world cup?

RunawayWife · 05/05/2010 19:33

Illegal to fly our own flag? Fucking madness.
Too bloody right it is time to reclaim it and be proud of it

pagwatch · 05/05/2010 19:33

Eggy.
That is brilliant!

pagwatch · 05/05/2010 19:34

Illegal?
Am I missing a joke?
