to be annoyed that the house across the road has a bloody big England flag flapping around outside?

Huge thing, it is. Hung from two of the upstairs windows. I HATE that. It makes the whole street look horrid. I know that might make me sound like a knob, but it just looks so tacky. My DB has just nipped over, and when I told him I hated the look of it, he laughed and said I was being a snob. Am I?

It is DIRECTLY opposite my front window, every time I look out, it is there, looming!

In fact it may start on the 11th and finish on the 11th july. I just know when England are playing.

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/05/2010 15:44

I work with blokes. This is all they are going to be blardy talking about for 4 whole weeks.

During the last world cup one of my friends who lives in yummy area came home to find her teenage son had painted the reclaimed wood front door which had been painstakingly stripped and restored with stained glass as a big flag with the cheapest brightest gloss paint you have ever seen plus spilled it all over the tiled path The neighbours were in shock for about 6 months about the value of their houses

sallyJayGorce · 05/05/2010 15:45

Better than a huge pic of you naked.

pagwatch · 05/05/2010 15:46

Poledra
You have the cut of my jib.

AbsOfCroissant · 05/05/2010 15:47

Yeah, one of the neighbours has four which have been up since just before St George's day. To each their own.

There was that joke during the last world cup that all the dangerous drivers have been told to put a white flag with a red cross in the middle, two if they're really bad drivers.

motherbeyond · 05/05/2010 15:47

i hate it too! agree it looks tacky

Jamieandhismagictorch · 05/05/2010 15:48

I hate football. And England are crap (not the women's team, though).

SleepyCaz · 05/05/2010 15:48

Soz Fudge (blush) (grin)

Lol bar-with-shakers, Pag, I want one too!! Footie IS horrible now, it has a horrible culture and nothing to recommend it, IMO, anyway.

I acknowledge I am being snotty snobby. But have recently been able, through hard work and a bit of sacrifice, to move from a genuinely nasty part of town, to a nice part of town. The last Euro Championships, a few years back, my old neighbourhood was FILLED with flags and the whole fortnight was a NIGHTMARE. Yobs drinking in the street untill the early hours every night, eventually degenerating into fights, Police all over the place all the time, being intimidated and bullied by pricks if you admitted you weren't interested in it etc etc. Think this new flag (which went up while I was at the shops, I'm sure he waited til I was out (grin) ), is bringing back bad memories. Am chastened, sorry footie fan MNers (humbled emoticon)!

UnquietDad · 05/05/2010 15:50

it could be worse

UnquietDad · 05/05/2010 15:53

The problem with England is the same problem as with Tim Henman. They're not crap, just not as great as people think.

Henman got to no.4 in the world tennis rankings, which is fantastic. But of course you don't win Grand Slams by being no.4.

Same with England - we have, probably, the 12th or 13th best football team in the world. On a good day, the 8th or 9th best. So anything beyond the quarter-finals is over-performing. Of course, an entire generation knows their dads saw England win the World Cup and has got it into their heads that, on the "Buggins's Turn" principle, England will win again in 2010 or 2014. Which is a bit deluded, really.

GypsyMoth · 05/05/2010 15:55

are you trying to say england dont stand a chance, unquietdad??

SleepyCaz · 05/05/2010 15:55

Firsttime, I actually am my own worst enemy as far as this goes... Essex? No, I live in ....COVENTRY, lol! So am most definitely being a wannabe snob/snob! Can't help it though! Just HATE them so much.

Noddy, OMG. I think I would faint!! What on earth possessed him? LMAO!

SJ, I might look great naked, for all you know! ;)

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 15:56

Hmm... ponders if it would be less tacky if it was the flag of a stylish nation such as Italy. Would it then be passionate and vibrant instead of tacky and yobbish.

UnquietDad · 05/05/2010 15:57

I'm trying to say England will have to over-perform to reach the semis!! To win it you have to be better than the best South America has to offer, namely Brazil, and the best Europe has to offer, namely Spain, Italy and Holland. And maybe Germany.

But... they do have a record of raising their game for the big opponents. So who knows?

SleepyCaz · 05/05/2010 15:57

It would still be bloody garish and irritating!, Orm! ;)
