to think that two bottles of wine per person is not that much?

Following on from a conversation with a friend last night. Friend A had about six glasses of wine from 7 till 11, plus dinner, plus lots of nibbles, chat and general unwinding, then went home. Once she'd gone, friend B (still waiting for taxi) said something along the lines of 'OMG, can you believe how much juice she shipped tonight?'

I had noticed, but only because of the empties. Between the four of us, we went through about 6 bottles of wine, but I had bought 8, because I always over buy on food and booze; a kind of better too much than too little thing.

So what do you think? Is two bottles of wine too much? I had about 3/4 glasses, so about a bottle, but I'm sure I've drank more and not been disgusted with myself!

2 bottle of wine each is a LOT of wine. I am teetotal these days and before I gave up 2 bottles was becoming a regular Friday night kind of thing, and it was making me very ill.

I suspect the replies that you'll get on this won't really answer your question. Those that drink 2 bottles will say that it is fine and normal, and those that don't (and couldn't) drink 2 bottles will say that it is too much.

Meglet · 01/05/2010 09:06

2 bottles is far too much.

Are you trying to pickle yourself .

kreecherlivesupstairs · 01/05/2010 09:07

fine in my opinion.

BythewayItsStillMe · 01/05/2010 09:08

My mum drinks a bottle to herself every night she is pickled.

BAFE · 01/05/2010 09:08

too much

purepurple · 01/05/2010 09:08

It is a lot of wine.
I can't drink more than 3 small glasses (you get 5 small ones in a bottle) in one sitting.
I can drink a whole bottle over a day if I am eating as well.
But two? No way. I would be very drunk (probably comatose) and very ill the next day.

Rosieeo · 01/05/2010 09:08

Not me, I had about a bottle. But I'm sure I have drank more in the past. Maybe not regularly, but I have.

Friend A is a heavier drinker than me, but I've never seen it as a problem.

I agree with Meglet. Way too much wine!! I am not a huge wine drinker though, a glass or two is more than enough for me, not a fan of being drunk.

BythewayItsStillMe · 01/05/2010 09:09

That should have said:

My mum drinks a bottle to herself every night. She is pickled.

Trikken · 01/05/2010 09:10

I get sqiffy after two glasses, let alone two bottles!

Lulumaam · 01/05/2010 09:10

i shared a bottle and a bit with a friend last night , along with a big roast dinner.. feel a bit headachey this morning, despite water before bed... think we had 3- 4 glasses each

personally, two bottles would have me vomiting, ill and feeling like shite and hungover. i could not and woul dnot drink that much, i would be unable to work /look after the children

if you can drink 2 bottles in one night without it touching the sides, i personally would be concerned about being able to take that much alcohol

surely 2 bottles is equivalent of binge drinking? i was a bit [shocked] we sank a bottle last night

Rosieeo · 01/05/2010 09:11

Are all the drinkers still in bed?

OP posts:
Trikken · 01/05/2010 09:11

squiffy i mean

Eddas · 01/05/2010 09:12

2 bottles is a lot per person in a night. One is too much for me!! Last night I was out with friends, one of whom said that she and her dh meet up with another couple and often drink 14 bottles maybe she was ahving me on that's 3.5 bottles each

Rosieeo · 01/05/2010 09:13

Lulu, no, not me! I had the same as you! But I felt ok after water and paracetamol.

When I have drank two bottles, I've felt hungover. Haven't spoken to friend A yet though.

It is a lot, of course it is a lot.

I have drunk that much on a big night out though.

porcamiseria · 01/05/2010 09:14

for a friday night piss up its OK. every night, err its alkie time

ifancyashandy · 01/05/2010 09:14

Done it on more than one(hundred) occassions. Not every day or every week but probably once a month. Easily done - with a friend, have a glass at 7pm, still up at midnight and Ooops, the two of you have gone through 3 and a bit bottles of wine with food, whilst putting world to rights.

If you're not doing it every day or every week then don't see the problem.

Bathsheba · 01/05/2010 09:14

I can drink a lot...but I am ill after 2 full bottles of wine...sometimes 1 bottle isn't enough, but 2 is too much.

I've never understood people, generally contestants on big Brother who are completely wasted and bahaving completely ridiculously after 1 glass - or couples who behave WILDLY after "sharing a whole bottle of wine"..(which is 2 glasses each...)..but 2 bottles is a LOT...

When I was a student that would be a standard Friday night, but that was to get me "student" drunk and not "adult drunk"

fortyplus · 01/05/2010 09:16

I would say one bottle per person is fine. A bottle and a half is going for it a bit. Two bottles is daft - though I've done it myself many times!

bigstripeytiger · 01/05/2010 09:16

One bottle would have me very ill the next day, so to me 2 sounds like a lot.

PuppyMonkey · 01/05/2010 09:16

Three glasses and I am very merry, especially if in those large glasses. Six, I would be paralytic. Two bottles is a lot, no getting away from that. But it's not as if you would do that every night, I presume.

Doodleydoo · 01/05/2010 09:16

In the old days 2 bottles of wine wouldn't have been that unusual on a big night, I have one friend like your Friend A who is a big drinker and will do at least a bottle of wine to herself a night (or before 2 dc did!!!) but she was not very nice to be with after more than that. I think it all depends on how your friend was after the wine, if really squiffy and passing out in your home then yes way too much, if slightly wobbly like the rest of you then not too much of a problem if not an everyday occurance and is a one off girls night.

Ffrecklefface · 01/05/2010 09:17

Bloke and I can do three bottles between the two of us, over an evening with dinner, without being too drunk or suffering the next day.

Alcohol consumption is a personal thing that will vary widely from person to person. In my group of friends, two bottles per person wouldn't be viewed as a scandalous amount.

TotalChaos · 01/05/2010 09:18

two bottles is a lot. but doing it once a night is somewhat different from doing it once a year!
