to think that two bottles of wine per person is not that much?

Following on from a conversation with a friend last night. Friend A had about six glasses of wine from 7 till 11, plus dinner, plus lots of nibbles, chat and general unwinding, then went home. Once she'd gone, friend B (still waiting for taxi) said something along the lines of 'OMG, can you believe how much juice she shipped tonight?'

I had noticed, but only because of the empties. Between the four of us, we went through about 6 bottles of wine, but I had bought 8, because I always over buy on food and booze; a kind of better too much than too little thing.

So what do you think? Is two bottles of wine too much? I had about 3/4 glasses, so about a bottle, but I'm sure I've drank more and not been disgusted with myself!

I probably drink a bottle once a fortnight. I don't drink in the week at all, but every now and then I'll drink more. I know it's binge drinking, but didn't think it was a big deal. Am a bit that lots of you think it's an indecent amount!

alot but not too much for an occasion. too muc if just having 2 every night as a matter of course.

Doodleydoo · 01/05/2010 09:19

I should say that it would have been a big night and am assuming that is how much was drunk, probably now happens x1 per year and now if it does happen am vomiting myself silly

thehillsarealive · 01/05/2010 09:20

I am one of the people who are wasted after a couple of glasses. Wine affects me much more than spirits.

I think 2 bottles each is a lot, maybe it is a one off and she felt she could cut loose with her friends. Or was your other friend being concerned about her consumption in general?

paddingtonbear1 · 01/05/2010 09:23

I don't think I could get through that much between 7-11, but a friend and I do occasionally drink the equivalent of that over a longer period of time. (She says over, we go to bed v late). We're not normally ill after, but we do drink several cups of tea inbetween the alcohol!

JackBauerIsZonerrific · 01/05/2010 09:23

2 bottles each is a huge amount. 1 bottle is a lot tbh but doable on a 'special' night. 2 bottles is binge drinking I'm afraid.

PuppyMonkey · 01/05/2010 09:23

thehiils, I am the same with wine. I can drink loads of Bacardi or Gin or Vodka and not feel nearly as tipsy.

Rosieeo · 01/05/2010 09:24

Doodleydoo she was fine! Bit daft and giggly, but we all were, including friend B.

thehills friend B seemed really shocked. She's mentioned it in the past, in front of friend A (in a jokey way) but it was just laughed off. I wouldn't mind if friend B didn't drink, but she probably had the same as me. Which means that friend C drank about the same as friend A.
When did I become the booze detective?

I think it is rather a lot. A half bottle is my limit. In my early 20's I could manage a bottle but would need a lie in with paracetemol the next day.

(blimey I sound prim!)

compo · 01/05/2010 09:33

I can drink a bottle but then I need to go on to a different drink or I'll be very ill the next day
so I can drink 3 large glasses of wine and then foolishly a baileys or something and need some paracetmol the next day

if I drank 2 bottles of wine I would be in bed all the next day being sick , migraine etc etc

Rosieeo · 01/05/2010 09:39

I'm ok after more. Headache and tired, slower to get started, but generally not bad by lunch. Oh dear...

I think 2 bottles is quite a lot but not ridiculously so. My issue is more that she polished it off in 4 hours - that is really quick, and also the fact that she seems to be drinking so much faster than the people she is with.
However, it sounds like she always drinks more and handles it so maybe friend B needs to get over it.

moondog · 01/05/2010 09:45

Two bottles is a vast amount of wine.
I would be as sick as a dog.

thelunar66 · 01/05/2010 09:46

I drank one whole bottle of cava (11%) last night, plus a small bacardi and lemonade. I can barely focus to type this morning and my head is killing me.

Surely 6 bottles between 4 people is not 2 bottles each?

compo · 01/05/2010 09:47

I would definitely have a migraine after a whole bottle of cava, sympathies!

expatinscotland · 01/05/2010 09:47

i have drunk that much in the now distant past and not been sick, just very drunk.

but it's a lot of wine.

and i wouldn't attempt it nowadays because i'd vomit long before i got there.

smallishsheep · 01/05/2010 09:48

Far too much.

Lizzylou · 01/05/2010 09:52

It's a lot, I'd be very drunk if I had 2 bottles of wine.
Have had that much over the course of a day (BBQ's etc) with lots of food but in one night I'd be very ill.
If I go out I can't have wine all night, G&T is better, plus lots of water.

Morloth · 01/05/2010 09:53

I couldn't do it now, but did when younger. I think it isn't so bad if she doesn't make a habit of it, the wine is good and the company was fun.

DH used to be able to share a bottle, but now after one glass we are both done. Doesn't seem to apply to tequila though - I can still do as many shots as before.

PrettyCandles · 01/05/2010 09:56

One bottle of wine contains about 9 units of alcohol.

You think 18 units over the course of an evening is not excessive?

Threelittleducks · 01/05/2010 10:00

I am a seasoned student and love adrink but consider 2 bottles as excessive. Our group of mates can put away a vast amount but 2 bottles of wine each would be cause for concern.

blackmilkofdaybreak · 01/05/2010 10:01

One bottle is about the vomit threshold for me.

MarineIguana · 01/05/2010 10:01

I used to drink like that in my 20s - some evenings (at parties etc, not every night) I'd definitely have more than 6 large glasses of wine. It wasn't good and the hangovers really started to get bad as I got older. At 30 I resolved to cut back and did. Now I never have more than one or two and no hangovers. It's also really nice not to get drunk. (I never drank to get drunk, I just really like wine!)

According to official advice of course your friend is binge drinking and it could be pretty unhealthy. Don't want to sound preachy but if she does it a lot it could make her ill, affect fertility etc.
