hi, im new on here. im having my first baby in november and im planning on breastfeeding. my sister just had a baby and she says she doesnt want to breastfeed. i just think thats soooo slefish. the leaflets my midwife gave me said its so much better for babys and i dont no why she doesnt want to. am i being unreasonable or is she just a selfish moo. she says she doesnt want saggy boobs.

PMSL at ICouldHaveWrittenThis's sensitive and diplomatic response.

Maleeka · 30/04/2010 23:44

Evadeeb · 30/04/2010 23:45

is this for real?

YABU

Joolyjoolyjoo · 30/04/2010 23:46

Sorry, but I think YABU, I have bf my 3, but it is a very personal choice. You will both have years of parenting ahead of you, and you will both make different choices along the way. BF is only one of the parenting choices you will make on a long long road. Just because you choose BF now and your sister doesn't doesn't mean that ALL the parenting choices you make will be right and all hers will be wrong. My dd1 is now 6 and the events in her life are in no way determined by my feeding choices when she was littler. I BFed because I wanted to, and that is the only reason (IMO) that people should BF

wastingaway · 30/04/2010 23:47

I'm afraid until you've actually had your baby and fed it, then you simply don't have the frame of reference to judge.

I'm sure that once you've had your baby you won't judge too harshly.

Evadeeb · 30/04/2010 23:48

'In theory' though you can understand some of what she's saying....

Surely?

Did your sister try?!

jellytot92 · 30/04/2010 23:49

i wouldnt judge her if she tried one of my friends tried and she didnt have enough milk so she had to give her baby SMA. but she didn't even want to see if it would work. is that not a bit selfish?

Well my nipples felt like they were being chewed off in the 1st week of bf and they were squirting blood into the breast pump, making me cry in pain and horror. So I did PMSL at ICouldHaveWrittenThis's post too! Well, you did ask...

OP, yabu to be angry and to call your sister lazy. Nothing lazy about ff anyway, all that bottle scrubbing.

yabu, just wait until your a mum yourself before you judge so harshly. Breastfeeding is not always easy and dosn't always go to plan. I truly hope you are successful in breastfeeding your baby but you might not be.

petisa · 30/04/2010 23:51

It's NONE of your business. And what wastingaway said.

Tiredmumno1 · 30/04/2010 23:51

seriously op stop worrying the baby will be fine, i bf ds2 and ff ds1, nothing happened to them. it really is not a big issue.

if she has made her decision then i suggest you drop it. if i you were my sister i would be pretty with you. i hope you havent been going on at her.

saslou · 30/04/2010 23:53

Before I had my first baby, I had only seen one woman bf and she was an established bf and made it look easy. It came as a shock to get boobs which swelled up like footballs and poured milk if I went longer than 45 mins without feeding. Then I got sore, cracked nipples (and, yes DS was latched on correctly). Mastitis came as a surprise too. I think you should see how things go for you before insisting that bf is the only way to go. Not everyone gets support to continue bf and not everyone can or wants to.

jellytot92 · 30/04/2010 23:53

i never said anything to her about it because i didnt want her to fall out with me and stop me seeing her daughter. i just dnt understand why she doesnt want to do whats best for her.

Evadeeb · 30/04/2010 23:54

Jellytot... you love your sister yes????

Can you 'respect' her choice?

I mean if you think she's being lazy and so on that's your choice but.... would you keep it to yourself for the sake of harmony?!

PrammyMammy · 30/04/2010 23:55

petisa, you just described day 5 through to 10 of bfing my ds!! He chewed and chewed for 6 months. I thought it was normal, till i had dd, who doesnt chew at all. gah.
Jelly, if this is real, wait till you have your dc.

Tiredmumno1 · 30/04/2010 23:55

And btw i hope your baby is not like my ds1, he would not bf, or take breast milk at all, obviously didnt like it, he preferred sma. what if they happened to you, then what would you do?

Lulumaam · 30/04/2010 23:55

but what i cannot understand is taht you are judging her before you have even had a baby yourself..

you have no idea of what the reality is

petisa · 30/04/2010 23:55

If you'd said AIBU to not understand why my sis doesn't want to bf, I'd have said yanbu.

But angry? Lazy, selfish sis? yabvvvu

Evadeeb · 30/04/2010 23:56

It might not be any of her 'business' but she can have an opinion - in much the same way as everyone here is having an opinion of here opinion iyswim....
