To sew a little willy on the doll I'm making for my son?

I'm making a first birthday present for my son. It's a cloth version of him, newborn size, like the one's on this site kids.nunodoll.com/lifesize/babe07.html

I'm putting in lots of detail, so it has fingers and ears and belly button and toes. I know he'll be fascinated by all the features. He sits and examines things like this for ages.

What I'm not sure about though is whether it should have a litle willy though? In some respects I feel odd leaving it off, it's a glaring ommission in my eyes. My son doesn't know his willy is any different to any other part of his body.

Makes me question why dolls don't have little willies and fannies. What are we subtly teaching are young uns by silently ommiting them ? I remember being a tad curious and freaked out by the sexless dolls I had as a child. Was it the beginning of a sense of shame in your body?

In other respects though I can't bring myself to sew one on. Feel like I'd be making some kind of mini sex doll. And that people that saw his doll would be weirded out, embarassed and think I was an oddball.

what does the mumsnet jury think?

A couple of cotton wool balls and a pipe cleaner would work.

TimothyTigerTuppennyTail · 25/04/2010 21:55

Having looked at the website - are you giving the doll nostrils or not?

I hope so, 'cause they look really bizarre without them (imo).

SlartyBartFast · 25/04/2010 21:56

you can get dolls with willies though.

if your doll is wearing clothes, and if you can, they go ahead, sew a willy on

frekkles · 25/04/2010 21:57

Yes i've sewn in nostrils and made the nose more obvious than the ones on that website.

Have a look at some of the bigger dolls on the site, quite quite bizarre.

Please post a picture of your creation

My son's my first baby and I haven't bought him a doll so far, so had no idea that dolls these days came with genitals! Phew, what a relief that it's not all as weird as I thought. I was just thinking back to fannyless sindy of my childhood!

my ds was most upset when his first action man had no willy and it was the first thing he did when he got him

NotanOtter · 25/04/2010 22:04

thisisyesterday - was it sweet aprils friend christopher?

porcamiseria · 26/04/2010 08:53

ewww those dolls are weird!
willy/fanny aside

megonthemoon · 26/04/2010 09:04

I bought a doll for DS for Christmas - just one of the basic ones in ELC with plastic limbs and head, and then a soft cloth body. We change the dolls's clothes and clean his teeth and brush his hair and change his nappy. And DS (just turned 2) always gets confused that he doesn't have a bottom, willy, belly button etc. - just white cotton. So if I'd even thought about it beforehand, I would have searched for an anatomically correct doll. So definitely think your idea is brilliant (and I'd be tempted to buy one from you if you fancy making another )

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2010 09:10

megon, we have one of those - i always assumed the baby came in a permanent vest iyswim.
which does msake nappy changes difficult...

megonthemoon · 26/04/2010 09:15

Exactly SPB - my DS keeps saying "vest off" whenever he wants to change the baby's nappy... He doesn't understand why his nappy his under his vest, but the baby's nappy is on top!

CrankyTwanky · 26/04/2010 09:22

What about testicles?
Little bean-bags?
You must make a scrotal sack. (Words I never thought I'd type.)

Can't be any weirder than the non-willy on Ken dolls etc.

CagedBird · 26/04/2010 10:07

Lemondifficult pmsl at your post .

This reminds me of an anecdote my friend always tells (whenever she sees a doll). When she was about 7, her uncle bought her a princess doll for her birthday which he proceeded to call little xxx . she completely fell in love with the doll until she decided to take off the dolls clothes to give her a bath at which point she found a little penis. She was so traumatised she's never bought or played with another doll since.

Anyway, put the willy on, I hate dolls that are not anatomically correct, they look so odd.

muddleduck · 26/04/2010 10:12

I tried to cut the willy of one of my dolls!

I wanted 'john' to become 'jane'

DH doesn't like that story!

StrictlyKatty · 26/04/2010 10:35

You should add one. DS adores his boy doll but it's doesn't have a willy which I think is a shame really as I was hoping to teach him that playing nicely with a doll is fine (his father doesn't agree!) and I don't want him to think he has to play with this enuch type doll as there would be something wrong with playing with a real boy one IFMS?

BubsMaw · 26/04/2010 12:41

I just asked my DD (4yo), and showed her the pics. She likes the doll and agrees it should have a willy "'cos boys do", but not two "cos that's silly"! She has a new little brother and is uninterested in his genitalia, probably because she's seen it all before at nursery.

5Foot5 · 26/04/2010 13:16

Won't it be fiddly to stuff?

frekkles · 26/04/2010 14:52

I have no idea how to make a little willy and balls now, and I feel a big responsibilty to get it right now. I like the beanbag idea!

I dont know if I'll have the will to live, let alone make another after this meg, but you never know!

Thediaryofanobody · 26/04/2010 14:59

LOL frekkles I was just wondering how exactly you would make it....

TiggyD · 26/04/2010 18:52

Little known fact:
Ken dolls are actually very accurate as nobody called Ken has a winkie.

EggyAllenPoe · 26/04/2010 18:57

Won't it be fiddly to stuff
