Would I be unreasonable to deface this poster

BNP poster attached to railings at intersection - it says:

"People like you vote BNP"

There is just enough room to scrub out 'you' and put Nazis.

I'm seriously considering it - I'm all for democracy and I wouldn't give a rats ass if someone defaced the Tory ones with 'duck pond'.

As far as I'm concerned the leader was/is a Holocaust denier (he says he was but he's come round now) so to scribble NAZI on it is accurate and not a slur.

SpringyThingy · 23/04/2010 22:34

Dodgy old keyboard, sorry for the sp's!

PerArduaAdNauseum · 23/04/2010 22:35

Haven't read the entire thread - and I think this is the first time I've posted without reading the entire thread... But I would be personally tempted to spray over 'like you' with 'with a brainectomy' and I would happily do it in front of my 6yo that I'm actively teaching right and wrong to...

missmoopy · 23/04/2010 22:36

Ivestillgotit the BNP are racist scum, attempting to disquise themselves as a legitimate party. You may claim to have a modicom of intelligence, but if you support the BNP then you are also a racist. That makes you seem really stupid.

dawntigga · 23/04/2010 22:44

carolondon I know several people who enjoy hitting and being hit with a cane.

AsLongAsIt'sBetweenInformedConsentingAdultsAndDoesn'tPutTheChickensOfLayingIt'sFineWithMeTi ggaxx

carolondon · 23/04/2010 22:49

Consenting adults is fine by me. Each to their own

ben10isgr8 · 23/04/2010 22:53

I think some BNP supporters are more misguided/scared/deluded/lacking knowledge etc than outright racist. Or maybe that is my optimistic hope

I totally oppose the party with a wild and crazy passion but I also understand why some people are turning to them. They are slick and sneeky pushing policies which may not seem overtly racist and hiding their true agenda.

missmoopy · 23/04/2010 22:57

I think that is partially true, however, i think that they are fundamentally prejudiced at best.

missmoopy · 23/04/2010 22:59

"they" meaning supporters of BNP.

carolondon · 23/04/2010 22:59

Ben - i think you are right but to read on here that someone thinks bringing in a policy that would make it legal to assault children is beyond belief.
ivestillgotit may be ignorant about their true policies regarding race but she clearly stated that she agreed with assaulting children in our schools.

Asana · 23/04/2010 23:15

I had a BNP party leaflet put thorugh my letterbox earlier today. I of course ran out to confront the ignorant idiot who decided to post it through the letterbox of two immigrants with a mixed race son in a heavily mixed area, only to be met by my poor postie who had no choice but to distribute it to every house he visited. On calling the BNP to ask to be removed from any mailing list they had going, I was informed that it was a Post Office issue over which they had no control who did and didn't receive their leaflets.

After briefly toying with the idea of using the leaflet in my DS's soiled diaper change routine (unfortunately, I refuse to cover his butt with any more shit than necessary), I'm now thinking of starting a campaign whereby we all mark the leaflets "Return to Sender" and deluge their PO Box (after of course adding a few choice words/images to the leaflets). Who's with me?

ben10isgr8 · 23/04/2010 23:19

Missmoopy, I agree they probably have some prejudices before joining the BNP...I am just being wishfull

I grew up with racist parents who said things in front of me and my brother to wind us up because it was such a laugh

They don't think they are really racist, just having a bit of fun

I was thinking of them as I posted, hoping they are a bit deluded rather than ignorant racists.

Some people...even those not interested in BNP... think schoold should bring back the cane...It is a silly wish and TBH, if it was a policy these people would be the first to complain if their dc was hit.

missmoopy · 23/04/2010 23:26

ben I was brought up in a very similar household. My dad still does it. He, however, would admit he is a racist. I have told him that if he EVER makes any racist comments in front of my child, I would consider stopping them seeing her. I know that will seem extreme to some, but I cannot and will not tolerate racism.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 23/04/2010 23:42

Asana - any organisation giving a freepost address on their unasked-for literature should be taken at face-value

StGeorge · 23/04/2010 23:42

Ivestillgotit - gud 4 u - at least you are being honest unlike some on here who just go with the flow. thursdaynamechange YABU - I would be offended if you defaced this poster because a) i have the right to look at it and b) you would deface the Union Flag along with it. I personally don't like Labour posters stuck everywhere but that doesn't give me the right to rip them down or deface them. You can make your stand with your vote like the rest of us.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 23/04/2010 23:55

I'm actually surprised that more people haven't said YABU

I detest the BNP and all they stand for , but I do believe in democracy. As such they have as much right to have their poster up there as any other party- you have to rely on the public not to vote for them, but such is democracy

SuziKettles · 24/04/2010 00:01

I believe in democracy. So don't deface the poster. Just make another one to put up beside it saying "if you're a racist bigot with a very small penis and a shocking inferiority complex"

That's pretty much covers the 3 people I know who've said they'd vote BNP.

Quattrocento · 24/04/2010 00:05

Gosh, I don't know anyone who would vote BNP
Aren't all BNP voters poor-white-trash (in the words of the film) and uneducated to boot?

Just deface the poster. It'd be unreasonable not to, IMO.

SuziKettles · 24/04/2010 00:10

The people I know who would vote BNP are smell, chuntering old drunks who've had half their brain disolved by the alcohol and the other half paralysed by saturated fats and nicotine.

The chances of them being registered to vote are probably nil tbh.

SuziKettles · 24/04/2010 00:11

Hmm. New definition of smell: smelly and small (both in body and mind)

Penthesileia · 24/04/2010 00:47

I've been longing to creep into some fields near me at night and deface the "Re-elect Andrew Lansley" posters to "Reject Andrew Lansley".

Actually, I probably just want to creep into some fields at night...

SofiaAmes · 24/04/2010 01:53

Why on earth would you think it's reasonable or moral to deface someone else's political poster no matter how much you disagreed with their point of view. There are legal and ethical ways of protesting the BNP - please avail yourself of those. Should we all go around punching people we don't like? Maybe we should teach our children that they can scribble on the school work of the kids at school who they don't like. Or better yet, let's just make it illegal for opposing political points of view to exist and lock them all up like in Korea or China or Indonesia or much of Africa.

singsinthebath · 24/04/2010 01:56

It's 2 am now.
I'm secretly hoping you've crept out at the dead of night with your defacing kit.
Nothing but Lib Dems or the odd (very odd) Tory round here so I can't help

SofiaAmes · 24/04/2010 03:50

Have you all really moved so far from a civilized, moral society that you are truly encouraging the OP to behave this way. I am really just hoping that this is a windup and no one would seriously actually suggest such behavior as appropriate in a civilized, free society.

Sakura · 24/04/2010 06:25

"I suspect that the BNP member who spat in my toddlers face and called him a fucking dirty chinky bastard was racist. ""

OMFG?! Tell us. How did it happen?

Sakura · 24/04/2010 06:31

SofiaAmes, the BNP has the right to freedom of speech, which is why they exist in the first place. The OP also has a right to rip the poster down (or preferably write some witty remark on it) for exactly the same reason.
