Would I be unreasonable to deface this poster

BNP poster attached to railings at intersection - it says:

"People like you vote BNP"

There is just enough room to scrub out 'you' and put Nazis.

I'm seriously considering it - I'm all for democracy and I wouldn't give a rats ass if someone defaced the Tory ones with 'duck pond'.

As far as I'm concerned the leader was/is a Holocaust denier (he says he was but he's come round now) so to scribble NAZI on it is accurate and not a slur.

I'd like my children to grow up in a multicultural country where you are encouraged to think for yourself instead of following any religious doctrine. I would also like them to grow up knowing that change and being different are not awful things.

Hence why I defaced and sent back one of the stupid BNP flyers and chucked the other. And will be immensely pissed if they send me anymore.

EldritchCleavage · 27/04/2010 14:21

Actually, I'm going to have to sort of (cough, splutter) agree with daftpunk on one thing (just the one though): 'white trash' is a horrid expression. If you're trash, you're trash, and your race is irrelevant to that. A racial reference shouldn't be added as some kind of qualifier.

Nellykats · 27/04/2010 18:00

The idea that the Muslims are going to take over and destroy british identity is ridiculous. You may of course disagree with aspects of one religion (I do with all by the way) but to see a specific one as the route of all evil is surprisingly what the Nazis did to Jews. The easiest way to find a reason for our problems is to blame the foreigners, isn't it?
Who exactly considers us to be the dumping ground of europe? Show me a non-BNP or non-UKIP research please.
Actually don't. I find conversing with BNP supporters pointless as it's just hate talk and nothing more.

Kaloki · 27/04/2010 18:20

Nellykats There are far too many parallels with Nazism aren't there? And yes, I'm aware of Godwin's Law and all that, but it's true.

Don't know about everyone else, but I'm proud to be British, mainly because I am proud that people feel safe coming here. I'd hate to be just another country tron apart by hatred, allowing violence against some of it's member's because they don't fit someone's idea of a "good citizen". I'm proud to be in a country that stands up for the vulnerable no matter their origins.

Nellykats · 27/04/2010 20:19

Kaloki, I really appreciate your words. Having lived here for 10 years, with my lovely Englishmen, that is my bloke and little boy, I too feel British and feel devotion to my country. Even when I visit my family abroad, I long to come back and so it hurts to hear BNP supporters want to take that belonging away from me. They do not represent the beauty of this country, my country. Kaloki, as long as people like you speak so, we'll all be alright. Here's a hug and a thank you.

Kaloki · 27/04/2010 20:34

Where are you from Nellykats?

kaloki - "There are far too many parallels with Nazism aren't there?"

There certainly are... I commented a while back about their manifesto commitment to abolishing the Turner prize, thinking 'ha ha, the nutters'.

Then I thought - actually, doesn't that ring a bell?

It sure did.

Kaloki · 27/04/2010 22:21

Yep, I thought that too Heathen.

The list is endless! And their main argument that "the Muslims are stealing our jobs" is identical to the argument against Jews. Absolutely sickening!

Henny1995 · 28/04/2010 02:44

Grow up!

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 28/04/2010 10:10

Um, hi, henny1995, welcome to Mumsnet....

Kaloki · 28/04/2010 11:03

Thankyou for that insightful and thought provoking piece of debate..

Henny1995 · 30/04/2010 00:09

Yes, sorry Heathenofsuburbia(you surely have a shorter name? That's a bit of a bugger to type in full, lol!) and thank you for your welcome;-)
I only read the first few posts - it was late - not the whole thread and I guess I just don't hold with defacing stuff just because we don't agree with it. I think that so many people in our society claim to be "tolerant" - until presented with a view they really don't like and then they go for the jugular.
I think we should be free to air our views without getting trashed for them (metaphorically having our posters defaced, I guess.)
