Ive just been to a well known supermarket with ds WHO'S NEARLY 10, and dp, had a full trolly of shopping £80! i.e food, washing powder, general household stuff, and a bottle of wine for myself and a create of lager that was on offer for dp, and the jobsworth at the till had the cheek to ask me for i.d! FFS im 28! ds is nearly 10! dp is 32! We were doing a full weeks shopping, and when she asked me, i pointed out ds and she had the cheek to say "that doesnt prove anything these days" well i totally let rip at her, common sense has obviously went out the window! She just shrugged her shoulders at me and demanded i.d, so i gave her my provisonal photo card license, and she had the cheek to hum and hay over the photo cause ive dyed my hair from dark brown to dark red! A supervisor (who i went to school with) came over and comfirmed it was ok to serve me, then she grudgenly put it through saying "if it was up to me, i dont think your old enough"!!! AIBU or should i put in a formal letter of complaint?

Just to give you the perspective from the cashier (I know you said you've worked on tills, but legislation changes pretty much every year), staff are told they MUST ask. Doesn't matter if the customer has kids with them, has a trolley full of shopping, doesn't look like the "try it on" sort, whatever. They might be trying to catch you out. Not to say she wasn't a bit cheeky to you with her "I wouldn't have served you" comment at the end, but the pressure is on.

I once had a woman with her very obviously teenage daughter and a basket of groceries, bottle of wine and bottle of WKD Blue. I wouldn't serve her as she had her daughter with her and couldn't provide ID. She was so angry that she came back later in the day and DEMANDED my name and address, then when she didn't get it she rang a nearby branch of the same supermarket, and then rang company Head Office! Thankfully I had managers that backed me up. I was freaked out. So that's potentially what we're up against!

Are you offended by everything?
Maybe you need to grow up a bit more and they won’t ask you for ID.

amysara24 · 20/09/2019 20:21

I’m a similar age, been in shops with my own parents/with children/ my husband in a variety of circumstances and been asked for ID. Maybe because I’ve done barwork previously and so have seen it from both sides but I really don’t think it’s a big issue.
If you have your license with you anyway then why even question being asked? Once she’s asked you, regardless of what points you make about the age of those with you, she cannot legally serve you the alcohol until you produce your ID. She was just doing her job. You had your ID there so it was hardly a massive inconvenience to you. The almost 10 year old with you could have been a friends kid, brother, nephew, cousin etc. Think the title and OP are a bit OTT. “Dear Mr Supermarket, id like to complain about one of your employees doing their job - and abiding by the law while they were at it”.
Non event!

I was 31 last week, I went to get some paracetamol and was told I needed ID because of Challenge 25. I didn't have ID on me because I wasn't buying alcohol and didn't think I needed it.

Vilanelle · 20/09/2019 20:29

So you let rip at a lady doing her job. In front of your 10 year old. You sound like a massive twat.

How would she know he was your son.
You dont know how your rant could have affected her.

I'm 37 and often get asked. Its nor always convenient but guess what, I suck it up

Marshmallow91 · 20/09/2019 20:46

You are definitely being unreasonable. Common sense doesn't evening come into it. The law is the law and the poor staff member doesn't deserve to be abused because you couldn't be arsed producing id that you had on you

My personal favourite is 'how many underage drinkers are buying £8 bottles of wine!'

Wow big spender. Maybe they saved all of their money from their paper round?! Grin
