Ive just been to a well known supermarket with ds WHO'S NEARLY 10, and dp, had a full trolly of shopping £80! i.e food, washing powder, general household stuff, and a bottle of wine for myself and a create of lager that was on offer for dp, and the jobsworth at the till had the cheek to ask me for i.d! FFS im 28! ds is nearly 10! dp is 32! We were doing a full weeks shopping, and when she asked me, i pointed out ds and she had the cheek to say "that doesnt prove anything these days" well i totally let rip at her, common sense has obviously went out the window! She just shrugged her shoulders at me and demanded i.d, so i gave her my provisonal photo card license, and she had the cheek to hum and hay over the photo cause ive dyed my hair from dark brown to dark red! A supervisor (who i went to school with) came over and comfirmed it was ok to serve me, then she grudgenly put it through saying "if it was up to me, i dont think your old enough"!!! AIBU or should i put in a formal letter of complaint?

I got challenged in Morrison's yesterday. The girl asked me how old I was, I said "39". She did I have any ID. I asked why I needed id and she said
"because it's illegal to sell alcohol in this country without ID".

So they don't even know the rules.

SamCam · 14/04/2010 10:58

Supermarkets have to take this seriously because they get banned from selling alcohol as a punishment. In Boston, I didn't get served alcohol in the Cheers bar because I didn't have id with me. I was 28 and well chuffed until I found out it was standard accepted practise in the us. I can't see what you are complaining about. Wouldn't you be here complaining if Tesco had sold alcohol to your underage dc?

RedRedWine1980 · 14/04/2010 11:11

I cant believe someone would kick up such a stink over being id'ed- serious lack of real issues going on in someones life if this is what gets them aeriated!

Im equally at someone basing their username and being so chuffed at the fact tween neds think 'dey is ded fit man innit'

Bizarre people sharing my world

OtterInaSkoda · 14/04/2010 11:14

Coldtits' child-borrowing ruse was genius. I guess it wouldn't have worked in night clubs though

OP - YABVU to "let rip". The assistant sounds a wee bit narky but then so were you.

JRWADDY · 18/09/2019 15:54

Hey, guess what ??
Morrisons pathetic, ridiculous excuse for not helping me in my purchase of two items costing £20.00 in their London Road supermarket in Bath was to say about ''Challenge 25'
I am disabled & cannot walk very far.
I am Terminally ill.
I do not look young for my age....
Oh, btw I am Sixty chuffing Three.
B***S..

Howdidido · 18/09/2019 16:13

I don't understand why you're annoyed... you had ID. You got your wine. Instead of whinging just show your ID. It's not worth her job to serve you if she has doubts. You're only 3 years above the challenge 25. FFS. I think you were so rude!

SachaStark · 18/09/2019 16:19

OP’s kid is now 19, and can buy his own booze...

MischiefManagedAlways · 18/09/2019 16:24

Why have you resurrected this thread and also started you're own one, JRWADDY? Hmm

Butchyrestingface · 18/09/2019 18:05

9 years later, @IveStillGotIt may be mournfully looking back to the heady days where she looked >25. Grin

Saddler · 18/09/2019 18:14

What you going to complain about?

Howdidido · 20/09/2019 15:39

Oh I'm an idiot

easyandy101 · 20/09/2019 15:49

With thousands of quid worth of fines hanging over my every sale I ID everyone that I've got even the slightest doubt about

Record is 42 years old

Once in my old business I had a lady come in wearing a kind of wide brimmed hat and I couldn't see her face. I asked for ID. She kicked the fuck off like it was a massive insult. During her ranting she'd tipped her head back enough for me to see her face so i said about the hat and that i didn't need to see ID now. Then she kicked off as apparently that was even more insulting

Can't win Grin

Pukkatea · 20/09/2019 15:56

Once they have challenged you they aren't really allowed to back down. They could even know they've made an error but usually policy states they must follow through. There could be someone in the queue who sees them being lax with the rules and reports them and suddenly they're getting people coming in to test them more frequently.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 20/09/2019 16:17

As its 2019 now OP's DS will be able to purchase the alcohol now as long as he has his id with him!

getoutofthatgarden202 · 20/09/2019 16:27

WTF - I'm 30 and I get asked for ID every single time I go out or buy alcohol in the supermarket!

So what!

The person serving will be prosecuted if they accidentally serve to a person under 18!

You are over-reacting massively - you went crazy in the shop causing all sorts of unnecessary drama!

jennieflower · 20/09/2019 16:31

I get this all the time, I’m 42 and I look 42, with grey roots and even the odd grey eyebrow between tints, I get asked for ID at least once a month and I rarely carry it because I don’t have a driving license. I’ve taken to carrying my expired passport because I don’t want to risk losing my current one, but even that’s been refused as ID because it’s expired.

I’m never flattered by it, but I do understand that as you get older it’s harder to get a feel for someone’s age. It’s a running joke in our household, my 16yo and 11yo children think it’s hilarious!

ghostyslovesheets · 20/09/2019 16:33

9 YEARS OLD PEOPLE!

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/09/2019 16:35

I still get asked for Id at 42, my 20 dn isn’t asked for id.

🤷🏻‍♀️

DuMondeB · 20/09/2019 16:42

I’m in my 40s and have been ID’d for buying spray paint!

Inconvenient but rules exist and the check out person had barely glanced at me - I don’t think I look likely to be huffing solvents or graffiti tagging 😂

Morado · 20/09/2019 16:47

When I was 9 months pregnant my OH was buying some food and a bottle of beer to make batter with and I was stood to the side waiting for him to finish. Then some woman comes over and demands to see my ID as well as OH because I was stood with him. Well... I was heavily pregnant and fed up so I went mad as her 😂 I just kept saying, "I'm pregnant and I'M NOT BUYING IT" and she kept saying "Okay well just bring your ID next time" to which I kept saying "Well no, why would I bring my ID next time when I'M NOT BUYING IT!" 😂 Poor OH was so embarrassed.

dayslikethese1 · 20/09/2019 16:48

18, Challenge 21 and now Challenge 25. Will it be Challenge 30 next?

Given you can buy alcohol at 18 it is getting a little ridiculous.

I think YABU though OP as the woman was just doing her job, as stated by PPs. It's not her fault that the law works that way.

Morado · 20/09/2019 16:49

Oops... Zombie thread. Sozzz

Whatisthisfuckery · 20/09/2019 16:57

I got asked for ID at a festival two years ago, I was 35. The lad asking me looked about 18. I pulled a face at him and asked if he was old enough to serve me.

I also got asked in Sainsbury’s about 3 years ago, so I’d have been 34. I didn’t have any ID on me because I don’t have a drivers license. Fortunately the woman who went through the checkout before me is a member of staff there and she’s known me for years so vouched for me. The bloke serving said, ‘oh sorry, it was the hair that confused me. I had a shaved head at the time. I just said, ‘well look at my bloody face then.’

DP gets asked way more than me and she’s 7 years older. Last time was last year when she was 43.

Fluffy40 · 20/09/2019 17:32

My mum in law got asked ID for kitchen knives, she’s 82!

ultrablue · 20/09/2019 18:43

Hmmm so you say you are told that you look about 24 or 25. Well that's why she asked you for ID it's challenge 25 not challenge 18.

Would you like someone to let rip at you with abuse for you doing your job correctly? No, you wouldn't so why so you think you are entitled enough to do that to someone else??
