stopping my kids going to a Catholic Church

jennyslinger · 17/03/2010 22:57

I know religion is contentious so I'd like to say up front that I am a confirmed atheist and my DH is a confirmed catholic. This is not about the rights or wrongs of believing in god.

DH wants DS and DD (when she's 4yo) to go to our local Cathocis church to attend sunday school and get involved with other church activities.

I have read so much over the last few years about the child abuse cover-up in the Catholic Church. For this reason I have told DH and his family that the kids will not be going.

DH says I am fussing over nothing.

I asked DH he knew a nursery had covered up child abuse would he be happy with the kids going. He says this is not the same.

Am I being unreasonable?

interesting stats onestonetogo, could you give me your source (genuinely interested to find out more)

jennyslinger · 18/03/2010 11:57

and for the record at no point have I said I think all Catholics are child abusers. This is about not letting my kids be an active part of the Catholic Church because the management systematically globally covered up child abuse for decades.

They can read bibles and talk about Santa, healing crystals or homeopathy as much as they want if that is the fantasy world they want to create for themselves.

JS - Are you for real? I think you have us all wasting our time here. You don't seem any further towards sense.

You have offended many people, including me. I'm off. I'd make a polite suggestion everyone else does the same, and from whatever side of the fence you are, stop feeding this bigotry.

amidaiwish · 18/03/2010 12:02

i'm off too.
this is going round in circles.

claw3 · 18/03/2010 12:08

JS, they are your kids, if you dont want to send your kids to a Church, then dont send them. There you go, sorted!

Your DH and his family are part of the same Catholic faith that 'globally covered up child abuse for decades' Does this make your dh and his faimly child abuse sympathisers?

All cats die. Socrates is dead. Therefore, Socrates was a cat.

MarshaMellow · 18/03/2010 12:13

very good SDD!

RockbirdisdrinkingGuinness · 18/03/2010 12:16

Me too. For the record though, of course we're ashamed of what's been happening, we're most of us parents and decent human beings. The events and the cover up disgust me. Catholics are far more aware these days and the checks and precautions are carried out to the tiniest detail. Our church has recently employed a full time person purely to deal with crb checks and codes of practice. So to say that being Catholic equates to being a child abuser, and accusing all of the wonderful dedicated priests who do a terrific job and who are no more motivated to abuse children than you, is grossly unfair and upsetting.

But yes, we are going round in circles here and I have spent too much of today being upset over this. Good luck with whatever you decide.

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 12:16

claw3

That is a really offensive post.

LeSingeEstDansLarbre · 18/03/2010 12:17

i don't think it is. i see the point that claw is making.

daftpunk · 18/03/2010 12:20

Seeker;

read this

I wanted to start a thread about it but I would have been accused of trolling again..

Say what you like about catholics....but at least we have common sense..!

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 12:22

Yes, and her point is very offensive.

claw3 · 18/03/2010 12:22

Why?

LeSingeEstDansLarbre · 18/03/2010 12:25

the whole thread is offensive, why pick on claw? i don't understand.

StrictlyKatty · 18/03/2010 12:25

Otter I think Rageesta was condemning all Catholics when she spat

'If you are a Catholic then you are a member of a global organisation that systematically raped and abused children. You are a co-conspirator and you ARE responsible. If you give money to the church you do so in the full knowledge that it will go toward financing a continuing campaign to suppress knowledge of child abuse.'

amber1979 · 18/03/2010 12:27

Haven't read the thread, however:

All indoctrination of children into religion is child abuse.

They cannot and do not understand the complexities of Catholic or any other theology, therefore they are being brainwashed and certainly not making an informed decision.

Children should be brought up to practise critical thought, how to put together a coherant arguement and to make up their own minds when they are capeable of doing so.

SexyDomesticatedDad · 18/03/2010 12:27

So me and my DW are child abusers???

amber1979 · 18/03/2010 12:30

Grr why doesn't my text come out in italics when I want it too!

StrictlyKatty · 18/03/2010 12:30

According to Regeesta, SDD, we are all abusers. Even my 2 year old must be complicit as I let him put 20p in the collection plate.

MarshaMellow · 18/03/2010 12:31

(You have to put the ^ around each word Amber - I seak from frustrating experience )

swanandduck · 18/03/2010 12:32

Sorry, Claw3, I took your post to mean that anyone still practising Catholicism was a child abuse sympathiser.
I've read it again, and see that it could be taken as a question to the OP.

fallon8 · 18/03/2010 12:33

what is going to happen about school? Might you suddenly convert,if the local catholic school is better than agnostic one?

claw3 · 18/03/2010 12:34

JS's point 'and for the record at no point have I said I think all Catholics are child abusers. This is about not letting my kids be an active part of the Catholic Church because the management systematically globally covered up child abuse for decades'

So her point seems to be all Catholics are NOT child abusers, but child abuse sympathisers by default just by being part of Church. So i was asking whether she tars her own dh and his family with the same brush.

amber1979 · 18/03/2010 12:36

If you're telling your young children that any one religion is the truth, that's abuse.

OtterInaSkoda · 18/03/2010 12:36

Indeed, why?
