in being cross at the girl on the very crowded commuter-stuffed bus who decided to peel and eat a satsuma?

Two reasons I am pissed off at this. One is, I do think that eating something very odiferous in a confined public space is anti-social....there is no escape from it...(even healthy foods)

second, and I do know this shouldn't really come into it, but its an hour long bus journey for ds who has dyspraxia, and he has trouble with travel sickness AND is a supertaster....literally throws up in the presence of oranges being peeled and eaten. She was sitting right opposite him.

I saw how he was trying to control himself, but it was clear he wasn't going to make it. So I manage to get him off the bus, for him to throw up all overhimself, and poor wee lad has to walk 25 mins in the freezing cold without his top layer....

Possibly IABU.

now relax!!

ifancyashandy · 08/03/2010 19:31

If I ever unpeel a satsuma on the bus in North London (and it happens!) and get the feeling of someone looking daggers at me, I'll come over and say hello!

blinder · 08/03/2010 19:34

erm is the fucking of citrus fruit compulsory now? Because I only have a
melon in the fridge and besides I was keeping it to have with Parma ham.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 19:35

I think its a voluntary scheme....

melon with parma ham... yum!

blinder · 08/03/2010 19:38

Yeah but you try peeling one on the bloody bus.

mehdismummy · 08/03/2010 19:38

now i am gonna be the mumsnetter who fucks citrus fruits!!!!!

mehdismummy · 08/03/2010 19:40

maybe peel it before u go blinder? wrap it in the parma pop into large sandwich bag!

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 19:40

But yes, a tad messy perhaps. You could turn into one of those evil peeps who buy ready cut fruit!

no worries, its good to have a hook on MN. You won't be forgotten!

I think the issue here is that you need to rethink your commute. I suffer from travel sickness and I just couldn't endure an hour long crowded bus ride - with or without food involved. Now he's been sick once he's bound to be sick again because he will expect to be - that's partly how travel sickness works. What about cycling with him - you can get a variety of different bike solutions and it would be much healthier and less stressful for both of you.

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 19:50

its a nice idea northern, but ds can't ride a bike (dyspraxia means his gross motor coordination is very poor, and he is hypertonic) and to be honest, the roads round here and into the city where his school is are lethal. And the pavements aren't much better.

morningpaper · 08/03/2010 19:58

can you not get a taxi to Mile End? Or walk?

Northernlurker · 08/03/2010 20:00

You need something like this then

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 20:02

its very awkward the whole journey, except for taxi or the bus which is direct. I can't go into detail, but if I say Old Street Roundabout, City Road and A10 you get the gist of scary road scenario....

OP posts:
MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 20:03

that looks fab. Does it filter exhaust fumes?

foxinsocks · 08/03/2010 20:09

I would revisit your seating plans

Bendy buses the worst for travel sickness - feels like you're all at sea on them

and tbh, top deck of the double decker hideous too - you're too far from the ground (don't ask why)

have you tried the frontish on the left seats on the ground floor?

MadameDefarge · 08/03/2010 20:16

its a double decker...and sadly at that hour of the morning there is little choice, getting a seat is a luxury.

I think I am going to go the taxi route. Its expensive, but not as expensive as buying and running a car...

YABU I'm afriad - if it was a durian fruit I'd agree with you - it really reeks and is outlawed on all public transport / space certainly in Singapore:
durian

In future you might think of carrying some sick bags / wipes with you - if you know your son has this condition, it's up to you to look after him, not randon commuters on the bus..

zazen · 09/03/2010 09:39

random even - how random is my typing - new keyboard excuse!

Oh lawks have just seen that there are 7 pages to this thread - no doubt ye have gone waaay off topic by now

pigletmania · 09/03/2010 09:44

Ok madam i wont get my egg sandwiches out or my onion pasty then! If it happens again mabey you should tell the person in question, how would they know thatyour ds throws up in the presence of oranges.

BendyBob · 09/03/2010 09:47

Ooh zazen the info about durian fruit is most interesting. I've never heard of those.

I'm tempted to get some for dc to take into school as their 'snack' since the school are so ott about fruit

katkit · 09/03/2010 13:09

YABU. i have a fragrance allergy and have to crack open the (very overpriced) eye drops if i sit next to someone really stinky. but it's just how the world works. i don;t expect everyone else to adapt to my allergy.

nannynobnobs · 09/03/2010 14:26

This has reminded me of my secondary school years... every christmas at Advent service my friends and I would sacrifice a satsuma in the church (the first year was an accident, sat on in wax jacket pocket!). They were thrown off the balcony, stepped on, rolled along pew to meet a descending arse... oh happy days.
