to think that wearing a dress that could be described as 'white' to a wedding is not on?

Please do tell me IABU.

I'm looking for something lovely to wear to SIL's wedding here and the two dresses I like best could both be described as looking like 'a long white dress with a pattern/picture/colour on'.

I don't think it's allowed, is it? Would you think it was odd if you saw someone wearing either of these?

Dress 1

Dress 2

(apologies for shameless link/bump for my 'let's look at dresses')

maybe no to the sea one

but i don't think it would be wrong to wear the cynthia one.

StealthPolarBear · 20/02/2010 16:55

they are both very nice - prefer the first one
Neither would be described as a white dress IMO - first is multicoloured
When you said 'picture' I instantly thought Mickey Nouse

Maybe I'm not up on wedding etiquette, but I think it would be absolutely fine to wear either of those dresses. They're beautiful, btw.

DEFINITELY Not no 2 it looks a bit like a bridal gown and bouquet
No 1 is lovely

TrillianAstra · 20/02/2010 16:58

I can take no credit for finding them at all - I love MN for doing all the searching and looking at shops I wouldn't have thought of

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 20/02/2010 16:58

now if you wear a tiara and veil, that'll be inappropriate
Especially if the bride isn't

JaneS · 20/02/2010 16:58

I think perhaps the second one would be better avoided, because if you're sitting down behind a table, it'll look like a totally white dress.

But they are both lovely dresses!

grumpypants · 20/02/2010 16:58

definitely not the sea mist one altho it is gorgeous. First one ok, but I don't personally like it. (Sorry!)

HopingLovedTheSnow · 20/02/2010 17:05

They are both lovely, but I think the first one is the more appropriate of the two.

Are you close to her? Could you ask her opinion? I got married in December and was more than happy to chat to guests re their outfit choices...

TrillianAstra · 20/02/2010 17:07

She is lovely and is so happy to be getting married that she wouldn't care if I turned up in a mickey mouse outfit.

I much prefer the 2nd dress tbh.

And UK in May it might need some sort of jacket?

Neither are going to be anything like the brides dress, are they?

SPBInDisguise · 20/02/2010 17:12

Well if you want Mickey Mouse I may have a dress you can borrow

GoddessInTheKitchen · 20/02/2010 17:12

ooooh i love the first one, i want to have it wear it its lovely

Trills - one is lovely - and not inappropriate - I really don't think anyone would look at that and think it was a white dress.

Intergalactic · 20/02/2010 17:19

I think that the first one is definitely fine, especially with coloured accessories. The second one I'm not so sure, especially as it looks like most of the back would be white. You could wear it with a coloured pashmina (or are they naff for weddings these days??).

wilkos · 20/02/2010 17:21

first one is lovely

second one is tacky

neither inappropriate but for warmth and modesty I would cover up arms with a little jacket or thin cardi type thing for the service

TeenyTinyToria · 20/02/2010 17:21

I love both dresses - either would be lovely.

TrillianAstra · 20/02/2010 17:28

Don't worry, I would of course need extra covering with any dress, for warmth and church-appropriateness, as you say. Don't think it's actually in a church, but still.

Oh that's so lovely to hear TrillianAstra - hope you (and she) have a fabulous day...

emsyj · 20/02/2010 17:47

First one is lovely, I want it myself!

Neither is inappropriate for a wedding IMO. One person did wear a white dress to my wedding, couldn't have cared less.

TrillianAstra · 20/02/2010 17:55

Thanks HTLS

Now, does anyone have a very large Coast discount code?

First one gets my vote too! Have fun!
