to think that wearing a dress that could be described as 'white' to a wedding is not on?

Please do tell me IABU.

I'm looking for something lovely to wear to SIL's wedding here and the two dresses I like best could both be described as looking like 'a long white dress with a pattern/picture/colour on'.

I don't think it's allowed, is it? Would you think it was odd if you saw someone wearing either of these?

Dress 1

Dress 2

(apologies for shameless link/bump for my 'let's look at dresses')

I personally think they're both fine and actually prefer the second one.

TrillianAstra · 20/02/2010 22:29

I have a little while to go so I can think aboout it, I just wanted opinions on whether these were even possibilities.

Good point about there being a chance that other people will have the same dress - I'd probably be better off (in money and in non-matchyness) going for something from ebay or a less well-known shop.

Hmm - generally speaking I think the 'sea' one is a bit close to a wedding dress, but the other one is fine. However if you like the 'sea' one then buy that - as you've already said the bride wont care what you wear & who cares what anyone else thinks!

My d-i-l did wear a white dress to dd's wedding[just a bit of embroidery on it]but no one minded in the slightest.I think that first dress is absolutely beautiful.

dress one is beautiful

and fine for a wedding

i wouldnt wear an all white or all black dress to a wedding, but i have worn several black+white dress's

shockers · 21/02/2010 14:04

My exH's friend's GF turned up at my first wedding (which was in a registry office so I could have been wearing anything)wearing an ivory lace calf length dress with a halter neck
Luckily, it was the 80's and I'd gone the whole hog

I like the first one best

nappyaddict · 21/02/2010 14:04

I think black is fine at a wedding. All white or all cream not fine but OK if it has other colours on it.

chipmonkey · 21/02/2010 14:18

shockers, maybe she was hoping to step in if you didn't show up?

shockers · 21/02/2010 14:39

With hindsight, maybe it would have been better if she had

MPuppykin · 21/02/2010 14:48

Neither are white, in my opinion. Both are lovely! Crtainly neither could be mistaken for a bridal dress. Especially with coloured accessories or a small cardigan as other posters have said.

(thinks of friend who's about-to-be MIL walked her son (the groom) down the aisle wearing a white silk dress, white hat with small veil and carrying a bouquet...... )

EdgarAllenSnow · 21/02/2010 14:53

i really love the sea one. both are suitably non-bridal as well...

i think i wore peach for a wedding once, but the bride was in a big white thing so no-one was going to confuse us...

skybluewinking · 21/02/2010 15:36

My Sil was the only guest who had seen in advance what I was going to wear to my wedding, a vintage white cotton Edwardian tea dress.
Although she had shown me another outfit specially bought for the wedding, She actually ended up wearing.............vintage Edwardian white cotton.
Call me Bridezilla, but

I don't think either of those dresses could cause that sort of offence,I like the first one more,

TheFirstLady · 21/02/2010 15:47

Skyblue that is awful!

skybluewinking · 21/02/2010 16:26

Ha, thanks FirstLady, although, you would think I might be over it 26 years later

hellsbelles · 21/02/2010 16:37

SKyblue what a complete cow she is...she must have issues!

TrillianAstra · 21/02/2010 18:31

What on earth was your SIL trying to achieve there skyblue? Does she want everyone to think she's an attention-seeking cow?

The weird thing is that we had a very casual reception (Don't mean we were casual about getting married IYSWIM) and it wasn't a big deal at the time, I totally ignored it, as was so happy .
It's just over the years with MANY other examples of inappropriate behaviour that I have realised HOW odd it was.
But Trillian, yup, attention-seeking is right!

lucky1979 · 21/02/2010 19:22

skybluewinking - my Gran got married just after the war, couldn't get hold of white fabric so made herself a nice dress from a floral fabric she'd got hold of, and was really thrilled with it. Her MIL2B (my great gran) found out the pattern and the fabric and made the same dress and wore it as well.

I have a copy of the official photo from the day - looks very odd!

Funnily enough my Gran always hated her after that (and probably before)

KimiGaveUpStarbucks4Lent · 21/02/2010 19:30

I like the first one best,
