expat, I singled you out, unsurprisingly, because your comment is at the end of this thread. Given the OP started this thread, I'm guessing she's already figured out that I think she's being unreasonable to want to slap the girl. As many other posters have said.

Does the fact that other people are being harsh mean you're not being harsh? Of course not.

I haven't read anyone else suggesting that she shouldn't have had the baby because she and her partner didn't have jobs or education. If I've missed the post where someone says it, shame. But imo it is way out of line to have a go at someone's level of education in this context. Some people with no qualifications at all are lovely parents; some people with PhDs are terrible.

My husband has next to no qualifications. He has severe learning difficulties and moderate dyspraxia.

He's a great dad.

But to him, having a job was paramount to starting a family. Any job. Me, too.

Nothing to do with being made redundant after you fall pregnant, but to us, doing what we can to support a family was an essential part of planning one.

But somehow that is out of line and having a go to even suggest that having a job before having a baby is a good thing?!

Um, okay.

Yep, you're entitled to your opinion.

I'm entitled to mine.

Two immature, irresponsible kids having a baby.

I wish them the best of luck, for the baby's sake.

JaneS · 17/02/2010 10:29

I didn't say that it was out of line to suggest having a job before a baby is a good thing. Of course it's a good thing, and if you had said that, I wouldn't have objected to your post.

But you weren't expressing an opinion on the ideal situation in the earlier post. You were referring to a couple of real people, who've found themselves expecting a baby. It's clear they wish they had jobs. Maybe they're not as capable as you and your husband. Maybe they will really struggle. But can't you remember that they are real people in a real situation?

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:29

'expat it isn't Sam's fault that you had to wait ages for an epidural.'

Did I say it was? I said she was lucky to get one so fast.

Because she was.

There are countless threads on here from people who weren't so fortunate.

'Does it mean no one should have a child whilst they have no job, not a good education and haven't grown up enough to satisfy other people? '

And yes! YES! I take a stand. People should NOT have children when they have not attained enough of an education or maturity level to exist without complete support from 'other people' who are the taxpayer and just assume someone else will take care of it all.

Sam's own mother stated that Sam expected everything to be handed to her. On camera. On national TV.

I find acting like they didirresponsible, especially in a place where we're lucky enough to have free, easy to access birth control on tap.

I come from a place where you don't.

I think society has big problems because of this. Hence, why the government is throwing money at this campaign to get young people on long-term contraception.

acebaby · 17/02/2010 10:30

I wondered whether Sam's terrible pain was caused by the baby being awkwardly placed - explaining the eventual outcome. My cousin and friend both had awkwardly placed/stuck babies in their first labours causing them to dilate slowly with agonising pain. Both were unable to cope with the pain and eventually had Caesarians. Second time round, both women had straightforward labours and coped no problem with gas and air in one case, and no pain relief in another - both said the pain was far far less severe.

Sam would also have really benefited from better antenatal preparation. Our brilliant class leader had us all practice how to use the gas and air, which was immensely useful. We also role played a caesarian, which saved the one class member who had an emergency caesarian a lot of unnecessary fear (she was expecting a paediatrician to be there, a drip and a room full of people).

Joy was being a little awkward, but I suspect no worse than many women in labour or stuck in hospital. Certainly, being stuck (very briefly) in hospital, waiting to be discharged brought out the inner 15 year old in me.

Morloth · 17/02/2010 10:30

Just watching it now, she just seems so scared.

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:32

Oh, yes, it's so easy to be capable when you're only functionally literate (DH) and mentally ill (me).

They are real people who chose to go on TV and air their laundry.

But we're all supposed to be nothing but sympathetic and supportive?

KittySpencersEmerald · 17/02/2010 10:32

yes ia gree
what do they expect fgs

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:33

I found Joy funny. Especially at the end, when she said she didn't know if she wanted a baby anymore, she wanted to go back to work. A little late for that!

And snapping at Fabbio about her bizzy lizzies, pansies and cucumbers.

KittySpencersEmerald · 17/02/2010 10:33

there was a man called FABIO?
on tv

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:36

I'll get all this 'I lost my job' blah blah blah.

Totally different situation to no job, no prospects, not in education, etc.,and everyone knows that.

Her mother summed it up best.

As for her mother being awful, well, how awful could she have been? She did her best bringing up the girl on her own, they still have a relationship, and she was there, doing her best to support her.

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:37

Yes, Joy's husband is FABIO!

'you won't let me have any cake, so what's the point?'

PMSL.

Morloth · 17/02/2010 10:39

expatinscotland "Joy hysterical. I'd have been pissed off, too, injecting early and then chasing up the dinner."

I agree, loved the "Some chocolate cake would make me feel better" and "Your blood sugar is high enough". Wrong fucking answer!

LynetteScavo · 17/02/2010 10:39

Then he told her she could look at it!

Best line on TV for ages!

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:40

Those two stole the show!

MumfieMagic · 17/02/2010 10:41

I am loving the receptionist most, she is HILARIOUS! Totally ready for a fight, a complete caricature! And she was straight in there with the tin of Roses before she went home, brilliant!

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:42

Receptionist putting her lippy on on camera. Her 'talk to the hand' stance.

Disenchanted3 · 17/02/2010 10:43

And the way he really insisted on the banana and she threw the chocolate

KittySpencersEmerald · 17/02/2010 10:43

the recpetionist is a VILE COW isnt she
and lady, strange hair and makeup doesnt hide it.

BertieBotts · 17/02/2010 10:43

Yes I thought that was great. They were a brilliant couple - very entertaining

LynetteScavo · 17/02/2010 10:44

I did feel sorry for Sam though.

She was in so much pain, poor love. She reminded me of when I was in labour with DS1. She really needed that epidural.

Disenchanted3 · 17/02/2010 10:44

I think the receptionist would be better placed at Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory.

expatinscotland · 17/02/2010 10:45

the receptionist was fucking boudicca warrior battleaxe.

Morloth · 17/02/2010 10:45

The withholding of chocolate for that poor woman is outrageous.
