To just not 'get the 'daily flying' lists which include things like "Had a shower.." ?

Firstly, yes, I know IABU, but seriously, can someone explain why people make these long lists of things which include "put the dishwasher on" or "ate breakfast" or "cleaned teeth" as if they are some kind of major achievements on a to-do list?

Surely these are just things you do automatically, as part of living, non?

Surely it takes as long to type these things down, as it does to do them?

So what's the point? Seems a sort of self-delusion of leading a busy, productive lifestyle?

Isn't it all a bit, well, meh?

How nasty Chablis. I haven't even been able to keep up with a lot of minor stuff lately, but at least you have prompted me to join the slatterns thread.

tethersend · 08/02/2010 18:47

@ Gibbon

Hullygully · 08/02/2010 18:49

Oh dear. Haven't got enough love for all this.

Mermaidspam · 08/02/2010 18:51

Chablis - I have read your little contribution to that thread.

You are a fucking tit, really. Grow the fuck up.

Do you not understand that getting out of bed is an achievement for some people.

Knob.

(Feel free to report me)

What i can't understand is why someone would feel the need to slag the slatterns off

It is the friendliest, most supportive thread that i have come across. Everyone on there supports each other and there are never any arguments or bitchyness.

Chablis please crawl back under whichever rock you came from. You have upset a lot of people who mean no harm to anyone.

Chablis, FFS. What's your problem? Just read your post on the other thread beginning "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" ... what, you think the slatterns list people somehow need to be persuaded of your conviction that their lists are laughable? What on earth business is it of yours? Oh hang on, you've already said it's none of your business and that you don't really care ... though for someone who doesn't care you're spending a ton of time and effort being an arse about this.

UpsideDownBlueMarmoset · 08/02/2010 19:23

OP, you claim to be interested in what goes on when people make lists and procrastinate. If you were truly remotely interested in that then five minutes googling would tell you that actually detailed lists can be a huge part of overcoming procrastination. Breaking down seemingly enormous tasks into small steps and getting a feeling of competence from doing those small steps is key.

It doesn't matter whether the task someone is overwhelmed by is getting through one day, taking care of a house, or writing a thesis - lists help.

If people have big things on their lists that are untouched then the problem is unlikely to be the small amount of time they spend ticking off other things they do - it's more likely to be that they haven't broken the big things down into the right first small steps so that they can get to grips with them. It's more lists of small steps that they probably need, not fewer.

Clearly you've never felt overwhelmed enough by daily stuff not to know where to start, or been unable to cope with the big picture such that you've needed help putting one foot in front of the other just to take tiny steps each day. Well bully for you - that's not an achievement, that's just luck. (If you had got to that point by your own hard work you'd know what it would have felt like in the first place and you'd have been able to empathize with the people making these lists.)

Keep my flowers away from your cunt! They are to be distributed as love-bringers.

SilveryMoon · 08/02/2010 19:26

I just ticked off the last job on today's to do list and I now feel great!!
My task ranged from 'hoover' to take ds1 to the doctors.

I FLY because although I had time to do the basic housework, I couldn't find time to do more detailed things like wipe down walls, clean skirting boards and so on.
