to not appreciate people shortening or mispronouncing my name?

Spurred by babyicebean's comment on another thread, I'm curious as to other's opinions. I have a fairly unusual first name, which I very much like. I don't like it being shortened when I haven't indicated that I prefer another version.

What pees me off even more is it being mispronounced even when I have just told someone what it is. As in:

"My name is (for example) Susan."

"Ah, okay Sasan..."

I then go on to drop my name into conversation again, and (eg when speaking to bank/council etc) spell it if requested.

Its hard to explain without divulging my real name, but I hope you get the gist.

Would it bug you too? I feel like saying, "No, not Sasan, Susan! It's got a bloody U in it, not an A!", though I haven't had the nerve to... yet!

Vallhala · 25/01/2010 23:35

Oh my word yes, heaven help the poor Sineads, Siobhans and Naimhs of this world! Lovely names but what a nightmare, I can see your point Giraffes.

Both me and DP get this a lot. His name gets shortened whether he likes it or not. My name gets changed from Kat to Kate or Kath. And I have no idea why.

Tortington · 25/01/2010 23:37

i have a simple name that my mother didn't put much thought into. it is short and still people pronounce the 's' as a 'z'

drives me maaaaaaad

Vallhala · 25/01/2010 23:39

Didn't Liza Minelli do a song on those lines Custardo? ;)

TamartorousBeastie · 25/01/2010 23:40

I used to hate it, but have grown immune to it over the years. It's amazing how many pronounciations people can find for a name, and as for adding letters onto it, then acting as though i must be the one in the wrong...

oooh looks like i haven't let go as much as i thought.

SlobbyBOB · 25/01/2010 23:41

Yor name isnt Solveig is it ?.

Vallhala · 25/01/2010 23:44

No, SlobbyBOB, not that unusual! That was bloody clever of you though!

My user name is totally unconnected to my real one.

i get called everything but my name kerrie, carly cassie etc etc. i now answer to anything with a c sound! I have what the weegies would call a teuchter accent so it can be hard for some to understand me especially when i'm on a rant

becklespeckle · 25/01/2010 23:46

YANBU

I shorten my name, my friends and family call me by this.

Friends of friends and workmates etc will often add a couple of letters on to it making it a shortening I don't like at all.

Others know me by my full name and shorten it to the same name others lengthen it to, I don't like that either.

I am XXX, I like to be known as X.

At least it is easy to pronounce though, it would drive me up the wall if people mispronounced it too!

drloves8 · 25/01/2010 23:46

i tend to shorten everyones names on mn , and in RL. Its not that i mean to offend everyone, its just im a really bad speller and a bit of a lazy fecker when it comes to typing (not to mention slow)

Wags · 25/01/2010 23:47

Hi there Vallhala, now I know what your name is and I have just looked up its pronounciation. I know how I would say it but interestingly after googling I have found 2 different ways of pronouncing the first part . Can't for the life of me think how people would shorten it though. How irritating for you either way. Sometimes I think people just hear what they want, so even after you repeat the name to them they still say it incorrectly.

Smal hijack, we lost our dear spotty dog on NDY to a sudden pyometra. Very sad and quiet in the house.

throwingnappiesattrucks · 25/01/2010 23:48

YANBU I also have a more unusual name (scottish gaelic) and just put up with getting called all sorts of variations but it doesn't really bother me anymore. However the day after my dd was born my FIL was already firing off suggestions as to how to shorten her name..I was so annoyed with him esp as its neither unusual nor a long name!

littlemissfixit · 25/01/2010 23:48

does'nt bother me on mn though

Vallhala · 25/01/2010 23:50

Wags, a fellow dog owner and dog-addict here feels for you. I'm very sorry for your loss. (Un Mumsnetty hugs)

Dunno how you know my real name though... I've never mentioned it on here. Put me out of my misery please!

Vallhala, YANBU. I also have an unusual name and have grown so fed up with blank stares/ uncomfortable fumbled attempts at mispronunciateion/ awkward attempts to refer to me without actually saying my name/ having to give a million explanations about my name , that I now call myself something else.

But if I were you I'd correct them when they mispronounce it - if you've already told them, it's their responsibility to make an effort to remember it, so why should you feel bad about telling them they've got it wrong? And besides, 'Sasan' is easy to remember .

Wags · 25/01/2010 23:51

One of our doggy related e-mails (does that sound odd ) regarding the puppy rehoming!

SpeedyGonzalez · 25/01/2010 23:52

Oh, and I'd never shorten someone's name without their permission. A friend of mine always refers to her DS by his 4-syllable name; there's a common shortened version but I follow her lead and refer to him in long-form.

Vallhala · 25/01/2010 23:54

Ah ha! With you now Wags!

In that case I can tell you that when it is pronounced with an E as the second letter I want to spit!

scottishmummy · 25/01/2010 23:56

my mn nom de plume is a statement.not my real name you know.so dont care if it is abbreviated etc

TheArcaneMommy · 25/01/2010 23:56

My name is a name that is always shortened, when I was younger, it caused a few problems, and still does now when I am at home, as my dads' name shortened is the same as the shortened version of mine!

So when friends would ring asking for me with the shortened version, my Mom would answer, give my dad a dirty look, then click it was for me! My family called me the version my little brothers used when they could not talk properly, it is just the last 2 syllables of my name, and that is what Mom, Dad and siblings called me for years, no one else ever.

Even if I say to people my full name, they reply with the shortened version straight away! Which I don't mind, as that is really what I go by with friends and family, but it is automatic with a lot of people to shorten it, even if that is not how they have been introduced. It is a bit overly familiar when it is a sales person or someone I have just met I think, but it does not bug me too much.

ErikaMaye · 26/01/2010 00:00

at doggy related emails.

Wags sorry for your loss

Oh, oh, Speedy I know how to pronounce your name Only because I have it written down though...

I'm terrible with names. Great with faces. But yes, irritates me too. Both parts of my first name, and my surname, get spelt and pronounced wrong. Erica-May, Erika-Mai, Ericka-Mae... And any variation thereof!

Vallhala · 26/01/2010 00:01

Oooh no, wouldn't call anyone by a shortened version unless asked to or intorduced to them as that!

By the same token, if I meet a mum at school I will call her Mrs or Ms X even if I and/or the DC know her first name, until asked 'Please call me Jane'. Likewise anyone introduced to me as Mr/Ms X.

Wags · 26/01/2010 00:02

Thats why I looked, for once I had the right pronounciation, but still found one that says its e. Still don't think thats the reason though, its sheer laziness. Maybe mispronounce their name in return, see if they get the hint.
