to not appreciate people shortening or mispronouncing my name?

Spurred by babyicebean's comment on another thread, I'm curious as to other's opinions. I have a fairly unusual first name, which I very much like. I don't like it being shortened when I haven't indicated that I prefer another version.

What pees me off even more is it being mispronounced even when I have just told someone what it is. As in:

"My name is (for example) Susan."

"Ah, okay Sasan..."

I then go on to drop my name into conversation again, and (eg when speaking to bank/council etc) spell it if requested.

Its hard to explain without divulging my real name, but I hope you get the gist.

Would it bug you too? I feel like saying, "No, not Sasan, Susan! It's got a bloody U in it, not an A!", though I haven't had the nerve to... yet!

nickel, DS and DD do have names that start with A and B (B then A in age order) and their middle names both start with a C. I know a few other people with girls whose names begin with A and joke that we all didn't get very far in the baby names book

I have a shortened version of my name that I go by. This shortened version sounds like, but is spelled differently from, my shortened name (check out my username - it's fairly obvious...).

It's amazing that, even when I am spelling it out THERE AND THEN, people still manage to spell it wrong!!! Makes me

YAsoNBU. It's common courtesy. And shows they are listening.

Didn't quite make sense . I meant, my shortened name sounds like, but is spelled differently from, another name entirely - so people always write this name and not my shortened name.

Good grief!

I like to ask people to repeat an unusual name, but that's because I'm partly deaf and want to make sure I don't offend by mispronouncing it.

I have an very unusual first name, many people have heard it now, but when I was born no-one in my area had ever heard it and were constantly getting it wrong.

When I started secondary school at 11, my new form tutor decided she couldn'tpronounce my name so started calling out my middle name. Needless to say, I have never been called by my middle name, and so did not answer the tutor, thinking she was calling someone else. I was given detention, even though I have politely explained that I hadn't realised she was calling me. This was luckily rescinded when another teacher had a quiet word with the tutor.

My dcs have nice easy names.

I have gaelic names which are pronounced using sounds simply not used in the English language. There is no point getting upset about it. I simply denounce all English people!

My name is only 3 letters long, and still people shorten it. It drove me insane when I was younger, but I try not to let it bother me now.

However, if anyone calls DD1 'Lil' I may have to consider homicide. Annoys the ever-loving crap out of me!

SpeedyGonzalez · 01/02/2010 15:08

How on earth do people shorten a 3-letter name??!
