to ask party guests to not smoke or wear stillettos in the house

I got a party invite today. On the invite it said it would be appreciated if guests did not smoke in the house or wear stilettos (this couple have recently renovated house and fair enough have spent a fortune on lovely oak floors throughout..)

I think this is ok to put on an invite. Another friend of mine is livid and thinks it's really rude...

Is my friend BU?

Next time I have a party, I might ban Uggs. Or Fly boots. Or Birkenstocks.

Actually, this banning stuff is a good idea...

MadameCastafiore · 25/01/2010 13:15

Don't sound like much of a party to me!

oldenglishspangles · 25/01/2010 13:17

am with you the UGGs

bruxeur · 25/01/2010 13:18

Could either of you spell out how making the place smell like poor people and junking an expensive floor "makes" the party?

If it's the prescriptive element that offends, I have to say that smoking and wearing damaging shoes are in the same category as breaking ornaments, vomiting on the carpet or killing the family pet.

Only difference being that some people haven't learned that, and so it has to be spelt out.

"If it's the prescriptive element that offends, I have to say that smoking and wearing damaging shoes are in the same category as breaking ornaments, vomiting on the carpet or killing the family pet."

All of which should happen at a really good party.

bruxeur · 25/01/2010 13:20

Christ. What are you, 14?

truoddsox · 25/01/2010 13:22

asking people not to smoke in the house is reasonable imo, the shoe thing is a bit odd, but understandable. Gives people plenty of warning not to wear their manolos in case they go missing!

tethersend · 25/01/2010 13:22

I'm pretty sure the Rolling Stones never asked the groupies to remove their shoes at backstage at Altamont... (other things, yes).

But they probably all had a frightful time...

MrsL123 · 25/01/2010 13:22

Our wedding was also 'no stilettos' at the venue's request. One of our evening guests ignored the note on the invitation and wore them anyway. I wasn't too bothered, it was actually quite funny at the time because some of the more bitchy outspoken female guests were all saying "look at her, can't even follow a simple instruction incase it ruins her outfit" sort of thing. But it wasn't so funny when we went to settle the bill the next day and was told I had to forfeit £250 of my deposit for the floor damage

So I think she's being perfectly reasonable. I'd rather have nice floors than direspectful friends anyway

tethersend · 25/01/2010 13:23
  1. Why do you ask?
tethersend · 25/01/2010 13:24

(BTW, it's tethersend, not 'Christ'. That's someone else.)

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/01/2010 13:26

Lol at 'making the house smell of poor people'

expatinscotland · 25/01/2010 13:28

I think stilettos should be banned full stop.

HuwEdwards · 25/01/2010 13:28

Well, I would oblige.

But secretly I'd be thinking 'nobs, why don't you have a floor that people can walk on in their shoes ffs'

SpringHeeledJack · 25/01/2010 13:28

I was laughing till I got to that bit

now am decidedly frosty

oldenglishspangles · 25/01/2010 13:30

bruxeur I was with you until the poor bit. Is that what you meant to say?

oldenglishspangles · 25/01/2010 13:32

Can i ask those that object to the stilletto request why not wanting you personal property permantly damaged is unreasonable?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/01/2010 13:33

Actually I have thought about this.

WHO gives out formal invitations to a party at their house with instructions like this on?

If I had a party I would just email/text/RING PEOPLE and ask them in person.

So, OP's friend is eithr (a) duchess of devonshire and you should respect no stiletto rule to protect chatsworth flooring or (b) lives in a 70s semi in Letchworth and is a pretentious whatsit only having a party to show off new oak flooring so you should punish her by wearing pencil heels and playing hopscotch on said floor.

Of course the truth could be somewhere in the middle of these extremes.

PuppyMonkey · 25/01/2010 13:34

I think it's just weird and daft to put it on an invite, that's all. I also think it's weird and daft to even hold a party if your floors are so precious to you.

HerbalHolly · 25/01/2010 13:49

HuwEdwards -

But secretly I'd be thinking 'nobs, why don't you have a floor that people can walk on in their shoes ffs'

So what is the angle that you're going for here? If the building is listed and the wooden floors are an original feature should they be carpeted/concreted over to allow for the minority of people who fancy wearing their stilettos?
Get a grip.
Perhaps the person sending out the invitations could add a further stipulation:

'Anyone who doesn't find this totally reasonable automatically has their invitation withdrawn on account of their being a wazzock.'

BrahmsThirdRacket · 25/01/2010 13:51

Both requests are totally reasonable. No one wants their house to stink of smoke and no one wants a nice wooden floor permanently wrecked for no good reason. I wouldn't even think twice about it tbh

oldenglishspangles · 25/01/2010 13:51

I might send the stillettos request on a text. But then my friends would not want to cause damage to my housse - not becuase I am precious about it but because its bonker to tell your children to respect the property of others and they willingly/ knowingly damage it yourself. I guess its because I have had had to work hard to get what I have and spending money on replacing things before they have worn out naturally has never been on my agenda.

bruxeur · 25/01/2010 13:52

?

Only poor people smoke.

Thus, smoke smell = poor people smell.

How is this difficult.
