to ask party guests to not smoke or wear stillettos in the house

I got a party invite today. On the invite it said it would be appreciated if guests did not smoke in the house or wear stilettos (this couple have recently renovated house and fair enough have spent a fortune on lovely oak floors throughout..)

I think this is ok to put on an invite. Another friend of mine is livid and thinks it's really rude...

Is my friend BU?

its onyl stilettos that do it
i think that is a fair enough demand in advance

trixymalixy · 25/01/2010 12:05

My friends got married in a castle. They were asked to put on the invite that the heels on ladies shoes should be no smaller than a postage stamp so as not to damage the floors!!

HopingLovedTheSnow · 25/01/2010 12:06

Totally agree with the smoking, but I always snigger to myself whenever asked to remove my shoes upon entering someone's house...

I do understand why people do this, but it does say a lot to me about their priorities (i.e that their floors are more important to them than their friends' comfort)

FWIW, when I had a flat with wooden floors, they looked lovely and characterful when they had been walked on and were a bit dented/battered...

diddl · 25/01/2010 12:06

Here everyone takes their shoes off unless told not to.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/01/2010 12:06

After seeing the damage I have done in 1 year to our floor with stilettos, i totally understand why someone would put that on an invite. They have probably spent £££ on that floor and don't want it pockmarked. Fair enough I would say.

Why is friend livid fgs. Is she Carrie Bradshaw?

Smoking a given surely. I don;t know anyone who smokes in thier own house, or would allow it.

It is far better surely to have advanced warning so can plan to wear flat shoes, rather than wear stilettos and have to take your shows up like a kid in gym class once you turn up.

Sassybeast · 25/01/2010 12:09

I wouldn't have put the smoking on as I'd assume no one would be rude enough to smoke in someone elses house anyway. The shoes one - it's tricky. We don't wear shoes indoors at all but I don't think I'd feel comfortable asking someone to take their shoes off. Having said that, I've seen the damage that a really spiky pair of stilettos did to a newly laid solid oak floor and it wasn't pretty. i think I'd rather know in advance than pitch up at a party and have to take my shoes off.

PuppyMonkey · 25/01/2010 12:09

I wouldn't have a party if I was that arsed about my floor.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/01/2010 12:10

Yes, pressure = force/area and is measured in Pascals and pressure exetretd on high heel from average woman rates higher tyhan elephants foot.

I too listened in physics (between painting my pencil case in tippex and scratching it all off again).

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/01/2010 12:11

take your shows up eh?

I meant take your shoes off

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2010 12:16

Much better to have advance warning of no-shoes or no-stilettos so that you can choose your footwear.

OtterInaSkoda · 25/01/2010 12:20

To mention smoking is a bit odd, but only because I can't remember the last time I smoked indoors anywhere. Nobody smokes in people's houses anymore, surely?

The shoes thing is fair enough. Your friend, OP, is BU. And I am seeing Carrie type up her column now... something about Fighting For Your Right To Wear Manolos.

Mumcentreplus · 25/01/2010 12:21

your house your rules...no stilettos would be a god send for me...they look sexy but hurt like hell!..

OtterInaSkoda · 25/01/2010 12:22

Or a storyline in which she single handedly trashed the oak flooring of a Manhattan grande dame's appartment and was therefore persona non grata...

pissinmy2shoes · 25/01/2010 12:22

they are nbu

southeastastra · 25/01/2010 12:23

they don't sound like the sort of people i would be friendly with tbh. showy gits by the sound of it

SpringHeeledJack · 25/01/2010 12:24

it's fair enough to tell you sweetly as you come in, but I wouldn't dream of putting it on the invite

It sounds bit like a Show Off Party- they want everyone to see their renovations but not actually make any mess. Bet they still have the plastic on the sofa

everylittlebeat · 25/01/2010 12:26

Stiletto heels are not allowed in any National Trust properties due to the damage they do to wooden floors. Fair enough I recon.

GothDetective · 25/01/2010 12:26

Yes Carrie Bradshaw had to take her Manolos off at a party as tehre was no advance warning. Then someone nicked them.

southeastastra · 25/01/2010 12:28

that was tatum o'neals party, she looks totally different now!

Fibilou · 25/01/2010 12:28

I think it's perfectly reasonable. I would not want people smoking in my house or wearing stilettos on my new floor. Pretty pathetic of someone to be "livid" about it

moomaa · 25/01/2010 12:28

We have boring old wooden floor boards in our dining room and there are dots all over where someone wore stilletos.I wish I'd asked them to take their shoes off but I don't normally mind shoes in our house except in the front room.

I wouldn't put it on an invite though, I'd ask people to take shoes off at the door.

mistletoekisses · 25/01/2010 12:29

Your friend is livid?? Over what exactly? If she is that offended, then she shouldnt go.

The hosts are well within their rights to ask for no stilletos. They can wreck floors! And dont assume that smokers will go outside..I have been at parties where once a few drinks have been had and smokers get too comfy....they will have a smoke inside the house thinking no one will mind/ notice.
