What about 'telly'? Is that ok? Thats what we call it.

Itsjustafleshwound · 12/01/2010 16:36

So agree!! My SIL likes to brag that they don't have a TV but they watch their DVDs on their computer - nuts!!

lolapoppins · 12/01/2010 16:36

I know someone like that.

So holier than thou about it, but watches things on I player and buys box sets of TV shows for her and her kids.

It's all about not seeing the mind programing advertising apparently.

Twat she is.

Oh ok I geddit I thought it was some strange colloquialism from your neck of the woods

Coldhands · 12/01/2010 16:37

Hang on, are you asking about people calling it a t.v. instead of a television or the fact that watching a DVD is no different to watching the television?

Cyb · 12/01/2010 16:37

Have you seen what I sent you yet on MSN

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:38

SoleLundyFastnet · 12/01/2010 16:39

I disagree. In my experience, many families with a TV (or multiple TV's) will have it/them on a lot as background / watch things they are not that interested in/ flick channels to see if there is something more interesting on.

When you use a computer to watch a DVD you are much more selective about what / when / how much you watch. And it is never on as 'background'. Not the same as having a TV at all.

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:40

you still watch a screen

OP posts:
Batteryhuman · 12/01/2010 16:41

Its just a way of implying that they are better parents/more intellectual/not stupid like I am for loving TV the crapper the better. Invariably if you delve deeper you'll find they are addicted to The Archers (which I like too BTW) which might not be on TV but is still crap. Intellectual snobbery is as bad as any other kind.

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:41

kids who dont watch tv dont learn how to self regulate andjust turn it off

mate of ds2s was allowed 20 mins a DAY ffs

They are trying to infer that your DCs are slack jawed morons whilst their little Tarquin hasn't been ruined by a daily diet of CBeebies. Smug parenting at its worst. Letting your DCs watch DVDs is still the telly.

Hulababy · 12/01/2010 16:43

Never have realised why TV was so evil. I'd have gone made this weekend without a TV in my hospital room. Mindless rubbish to watch kpt me going.

brimfull · 12/01/2010 16:44

yanbu smug gits
bet they tell as many people as they can

oh hello complete stranger did you know my children don't watch tv? but we do let them watch dvds.....waits for simpering approval

SoleLundyFastnet · 12/01/2010 16:45

I don't think they are trying to infer anything. Maybe they just prefer not to have a TV.

Why does it bother you anyway?

shonaspurtle · 12/01/2010 16:46

My friend was v smug about her dd not ever having watched tv. Then she put on one of those picture book dvds for her and let her watch it on repeat about a gazillion times.

Her dd sat absolutely rapt. My tv watching ds wandered off after the story had been played through for about the 3rd time. Perhaps I have damaged his concentration skills with my neglectful Cbeebies permissiveness?

Inside I was screaming "It's the same sodding thing!" (actually, after Owl Babies for the hundredth time I was just screaming)

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:46

lol its an AIBU thread
" why does it bother you"

Yes, and the people who say that their children have televisions in their rooms

"but they only watch DVDs on them" as if this means they aren't frying their brains watching a screen.

We have one television which myh children are happily frying their brains watching btw

lolapoppins · 12/01/2010 16:47

bloody Davina McCall was at it in the papers the other week, being all smug about limited tv for her kids.

My sister tells everyone she meets that her kids only watch two hours of TV on a weekend only. It's one of her opening gambits. Like anyone gives a shit.

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:47

i WONDER if you could "loud parent" your fact you dont haev a tv

" oh yes tarquin that is a t e l e vi s i o n, we dont have one but you need to know what other people have"

arf

OP posts:
RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:48
