Then why bring up the fact that you don't have one?

Personally, the idea of banning things just because, isn't the greatest way to teach self control or regulation

Ronaldinhio · 12/01/2010 16:49

my friend grew up without television

she is now a slave to it and cannot converse if it's on...anywhere in her vicinity

sometimes I imagine her as a child face pressed up to dixon's window, eyes wide in wonder

brimfull · 12/01/2010 16:50

my ds is addicted to club farkin panguin

I have to stop him talking about it to avoid disproving glares from smug screen free mums

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:50

sister says her kdis sec school has a ban on phones so if you see one its takne for the TERM

i propose that is similarly stupid - kids need to learn ( at that age) when its right and when its not

our house is dedicated to the fricking disneyplayhouse channel
i know all the dances to the hot dog song

SoleLundyFastnet · 12/01/2010 16:53

People generally find out you don't have a TV because they ask you whether you watched so and so. You reply - no, we don't have a TV.

In much the same way people might say can you pick me up for work and you might reply "Sorry, I don't have a car"

Just because people without TVs are in the minority doesn't make them freaks.

You all sound very cross that some people don't have TVs. Chillax people.

Mine don't watch tv. Just iplayer and dvds. Doesn't stop them wanting things though. Dd2 wants a 'gabby goo' (scooby doo) doll. But the Scooby Doo dvd doesn't advertise them. She just wants one.

Dd1 has escaleted to internet shopping. Damn that google

I don't really get what the difference is between tv/dvd/iplayer tbh.

They self limit tv and gaming and aren' half as bothered about screen time as dc I know who are limited. They know they can watch it when they want, so most of the time they'd rather be doing something else.

brimfull · 12/01/2010 16:55

I hat people without a telly -arf

Ronaldinhio · 12/01/2010 16:57

if you don't have a television does that mean you have to speak.to.your.husband??

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 12/01/2010 16:57

Well, we don't 'watch television' as such because we have no arial connected to the only tv in the house, which is in my bedroom.

We do however watch DVDs and occasionally download programmes on iPlayer.

When people are talking about Strictly Come Dancing or CBB or whatever, it is easier to say 'oh we don't have a tv' than to say 'oh we couldn't afford the licence fee and anyway 99% of programming is mindless shite that we are better off both mentally an physically for not watching, so we only have a tv set for watching films we can actually be arsed to go out and pay to rent for the weekend'.

So, YABU.

RockBird · 12/01/2010 16:58

Davina McCall was spouting off about it?? She of the shittiest tv imaginable fame?

I bloody love tv I do, and DD loves Beebies, so poo with knobs on to the tv haters.

ahundredtimes · 12/01/2010 16:58

I glove people without a telly

I scarf people without a car

I hat people without a dvd player

ImSoNotTelling · 12/01/2010 16:58

Ronaldhinio yes your friend - my parents are like that.

They look in the paper and choose the thinhgs they want to view and then they sit down and really watch them. If you say anything you get madly hushed. I didn't mind so much when it was all highbrow stuff but these days it's bloody eastenders.

brimfull · 12/01/2010 16:59

I petticaot people without tvs

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 12/01/2010 16:59

Oh and just to add my own data anecdote to this perennial debate - I grew up without a tv and hardly ever watch it as an adult.

thehairybabysmum · 12/01/2010 16:59

Agree...i always think but ITS THE SAME!!

Mind you i dont know anyone in real life who doesnt have a telly...just seen people on here saying it!! Surely everyone in real life has one !

Mishy1234 · 12/01/2010 16:59

I think sometimes it's easier for people to say absolutely no TV rather than regulate the time their children watch it?

My SIL's DS has NEVER seen any TV (they do have one btw). Don't know how they managed it. When DS was little and bf all the time, I don't think I could never have watched it while he was there!

DS has seen some TV (when I'm watching the news in the morning) and some Meg and Mog DVDs.

However, I have seen some Mumsnet threads where people have said absolutely NO tv or dvds for the under 2's as it damages their development.

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 17:01

I MUFF tell you we have no sink

Toffeepopple · 12/01/2010 17:05

Mine haven't watched any TV (or DVDs) since Christmas day. They haven't asked to have it on, and I haven't offered.

They have probably had a couple of hours on Cbeebies on the PC.

I was limited in childhood to what I could watch and still don't watch much now. Maybe five hours a week? (TV and DVDs).

Not sure why anyone else would care about that?

twolittlemonkeys · 12/01/2010 17:08

We only watch DVDs but that is because the things DH and I used to enjoy watching stopped and we realised we would sit and watch rubbish so we decided to save ourselves the TV licence fee. We buy the series we enjoy on DVD and that's it. I only mention it if someone asks why we don't have a TV licence. I'm sure we'll get one again at some point and I have no objection to television as such. Most of the stuff that's any good is on Sky now according to my SIL and we can't afford that.

I don't know why you'd object to people NOT watching television though. DH and I just aren't interested in the things that are on so we choose to avoid spending money on it unnecessarily.

I agree with SLF. Why the assumption that people who don't watch TV are some kind of social outcasts? I don't get all sanctimonious about it so what's the problem?

ahundredtimes · 12/01/2010 17:10

I turtleneck people who disapprove of all screens of any kind
