42 year old film director pregnant by 19 year old film star

23 year age gap and they're engaged and she's having a baby after a what appears to be a whirlwind romance. At 19, how long will he stick around with her for I wonder? That's not an age gap - that's a generation gap!

I know she's got pots of money and can easily support the child etc but it still doesn't sit right. Maybe it's wrong but there is something so distateful about older women and much younger men. It must be to do with the whole mothering/nurturing stereotype or something and it somehow seems incongruous. No one would bat an eyelid if she was the 19 year old and he was 42 though would they?.

I think it's quite intersting how people view these things.

Now I come to think about it seriously, I think it's probably much better that way round. I don't how often I feel like I am mother to two children, just one of them's 3 years older than me.

If he were 19 then it'd be brilliant. I'd expect to have to mother him a bit and help him grow up.

RockBird · 07/01/2010 18:33

Hully, you're talking nonsense.

MillyR · 07/01/2010 18:34

Rockbird, Hully is joking. She always does it when an OP expresses moral indignation over totally inoffensive sexual behaviour.

Hullygully · 07/01/2010 18:35

How very dare you, Milly.

squeaver · 07/01/2010 18:37

I think she's fab but did raise an eyebrow when they got engaged, only because 19 is too young for ANYONE to get married.

But all the best to them.

James McAvoy's wife is only about 7 years older. or 9. and they seem very happy.
VirginBirth -it was consensual -it's hardly like she shoved him into a room and had her wicked way with him. It may not be ideal in your book or mine for a variety of reasons but no one (presumably!) coerced him.
Maybe saying "good on her" was too strong a statement- I don't mean to say everyone should hook up with 19 year olds. But I don't see what's morally wrong. yes, his parents may have cause to be upset.and she will certainly get flak from the press. but it's hardly like Fritzl or some such.

MillyR · 07/01/2010 20:31

James MacAvoy is 30 (wife 39) but happily he looks much younger than 30.

OpheliaPain · 07/01/2010 20:34

at 19 he would be old enough to be in the army and presumably die for his country
over 18 no prob ehre

MillyR · 07/01/2010 20:39

I am very disturbed that sleeping with someone not much older than me is being compared to dying for your country!

pointydig · 07/01/2010 20:41

maybe he's n ot like most 19 yr old lads

Cyclops · 07/01/2010 20:41

The relationship may work out, who knows, but at 19yrs old, it's hard to believe that his character is fully formed. I will be surprised if they stick together long enough for him to finish his 20s.

But credit to him for pulling an older woman and credit to her for pulling a much younger man!

expatinscotland · 07/01/2010 20:43

i would be most displeased if my 19-year-old daughter started going out with a 42-year-old bloke and fell pregnant to him, tbh.

i'd find him a bit sad, tbh.

baskingseals · 07/01/2010 21:04

@ Hully

Rindercella · 07/01/2010 21:20

Can't believe James McAvoy's wife is my age I remember her in Shameless and assumed she was years younger. Cow.

scottishmummy · 07/01/2010 21:44

james mcvavoy is v talented

VirginBirth · 07/01/2010 21:54

It's not the age gap. It's just his age. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas were fully-fledged adults when they got together, it makes all the difference. Being in your 30s and hooking up with a guy in his 50s is just not the same as being 19 and sleeping with a 42 year old - whichever way round it is. I would say the same if it was a 42 year old man and a 19 year old girl. Although it's easier to see what a lechy 42 year old man sees in a 19 year old girl. It's very hard to see what a 42 year old woman without serious emotional problems is doing with a teenage boy. FFS, he was doing his GCSEs only 3 years ago.

SeaGreen · 07/01/2010 23:19

VirginBirth , when you put it that way, i have to say i see your point. Difficult to say what the right age is, but 19 is v young.

Scottishmummy he's absolutely the hottest man, and agree on the talent!

wannaBe · 07/01/2010 23:44

I agree that it's the age not the age gap that matters.

And sorry to say it but at her age I'd be wondering whether this was a good way to have another baby before she runs out of time.

If a 42 year old bloke was interested in a 19 year old girl i would think he was a sleeze. I don't think it's any different the other way around.

expatinscotland · 08/01/2010 20:36

'If a 42 year old bloke was interested in a 19 year old girl i would think he was a sleeze. I don't think it's any different the other way around. '

So would I. I had an affair with a 44-year-old man when I was 19. And a good friend had an affair with a 43-year-old man at 19.

At the time, we thought we were pretty mature women with plenty of life experience who loved our lovers past anything.

Now, years later, we know better.

Someone who does something like this is taking advantage of someone too young to know better, but who think they do (know better).

No matter how 'mature', a 19-year-old doesn't have very much adult life experience.

Fair play they're with someone who is relatively in the same boat, or you're, say, 30 and 52.

Her husband left her and took up with a teenaged lover.

Sounds like she got her own back, under the pretext of being this big, artistic free-spirit, and have one last shot at a baby, too.

I know now, my lover used my youth to recoup some of what he was losing.

And yeah, it was sleazy.

AmericanHag · 08/01/2010 23:06

Their lives, their problems...not mine.

That said, 19 is too young for marriage. 42 is too old for motherhood. Money and fame won't change that.
