MIL feeding my 17mth champagne truffles

thisweathersajoke · 26/12/2009 22:24

I was incensed yesterday after my MIL was slyly feeding my 17mth son these chocolates (he NEVER is given chocolate by us) - but was finally calmed down by my DH.

But the result of her doing that today has been him doing 8 rancid poos throughout the day instead of his usual 2-3, including a pile over the living room carpet after removing his nappy because of his RED RAW bottom - surely caiused by these crappy chocolates and the other rubbish she passed to him.

Maybe overreacting, but am sure that she did it just to annoy me, as she knows that i am a bit of a nazi about his food. After having 4 kids herself she should know better.

More worryingly, she will be having DS while I am in hospital giving birth in approx 3 weeks.

You definately need to make it clear to her what food is acceptable while you are in hospital (if there is no one else to have him). I have to remind my nan what I feed my DS and she does stick to it but I think if she had her way, he would probably eat slightly more crap than I let him.

YANBU BTW, this would have really pissed me off too!!!! Can your DH talk to her and make it clear that what she did was wrong?

PrivetDancer · 26/12/2009 22:34

yanbu, chocolate I wouldn't worry about, but did they actually have alcohol in them? or just 'champagne flavouring'? I'm not sure chocolate causes nappy rash.

juuule · 26/12/2009 22:38

I can understand you being a bit upset but as mrsjammi says it's not likely to be a regular occurrence.

And after having 4 children herself maybe she does know better that it's not too bad once in a while.

As princesstoadstool says if you really are unhappy with the way she looks after him maybe find alternative childcare.

ChasingSquirrels · 26/12/2009 22:40

mostly it's unreasonable because it is such a waste!

juuule · 26/12/2009 22:42

I don't think chocolate causes nappy rash but it can cause loose bowels. So if he's pooing more frequently and it's a bit runny then maybe nappy rash could be caused by not being prompt enough with the nappy change.

Normally 2-3 craps a day? Ds is 2.5, he only ever has 1 every 1-2 days.

Really doubt that the chocolate alone would have caused this, and if they were champagney truffles, then they probably werent even alcoholic, if they were I doubt a toddler would have eaten them as they would be too strong.

I really do think that you need to lighten up a bit - its xmas, its not the end of the world. Pick your battles and all that?

FWIW, ds had carte d'or vanilla ice cream for his breakfast this morning. Its xmas - his head isnt going to fall off, its fine.

thisweathersajoke · 26/12/2009 22:46

Unfortunately I don't have anyone else to have him while in hosp, and she should only have him while birthing, DH the rest of the time - so know it won;t be for long, but just ANNOYED as she knows that it would piss me off that she had done it!

DH was mad as well today, especially as he was the one who cleaned the poo off the carpet and he will be telling her when we see her again tomorrow.

Agree that chocolate doesn;t casue nappy rash, just possibly the frequency and content of the poo might have aggravated his gorgeous little bottom!! :-)
Bless him, he eats such a plain diet that this would have upset his stomach no end.

But yea its christmas.....although does remind me of when she gave him a 'magic star' chocolate when he was about 3 months - again while my back was turned. Had forgotten about that!!

There's nothing wrong with a bit of chocolate at Christmas. Really. It's fine.

picc · 26/12/2009 23:01

have had similar this week staying with MIL for Xmas (hence way more posts than usual!!

She gave my 10 month old DS a chocolate coin today! Was livid. But tried not to show it. Took a deep breath and decided it wouldn't kill him, it's only for a week etc etc

Have had to take deeep breaths all week when she's been mixing (salty) gravy with his potatoes etc etc....

She is actually a fantastic MIL, and I really get on with her well. And she's done loads to help in the past, and has looked after DS for the odd day here and there.

So I am just telling myself it'll be okay next week and I'll be back home and it won't hurt this once.

That's true isn't it?? I hope???....

but I would rather more livid if I'd had the poo-related incidents you've had, I have to say.

pigletmania · 26/12/2009 23:06

YABU about the chocolate, its christmas my dd 2.9 ate a lot of choccie, i would not normally let her have that much on any other day, but alcohol chocolate . I think that you have to be 16 to buy them, they are very strong.

juuule · 26/12/2009 23:11

Depends whether they were champagne or champagne flavoured.

I would be miffed if they contained alcohol and might be tempted to mention that it's illegal to give alcohol to under-5s.

How many did she give him?

PrivetDancer · 26/12/2009 23:44

eh? are they not allowed gravy either?!

scottishmummyofone · 26/12/2009 23:45

YABU re the choc and also giving your DS a 'plain' diet, give him more variety. Be grateful that your MIL is watching him, he wont come to any harm (a few runny poos, but she'll be cleaning up wont she?)

Alcohol choc is a no no though so speak to her about that, the other things YABU

pigletmania · 26/12/2009 23:53

yes the ones with brandy or other alcohol in the middle are a no no, they are quite strong, and for a baby no no no. But chocolate, come on its christmas.

purplehat · 27/12/2009 02:32

The issue isn't what she gave him- it's more the fact that she deliberately gave him something against the wishes of his parents.

What's okay to one parent isn't so for another. You were the ones with a poorly baby so it's up to you I say.

I wouldn't dream of giving any of my little nieces or nephews something without checking with their parents first.

WhoSleptInMyPorridgeAndBrokeIt · 27/12/2009 02:44

erm choc is a strong allergen whatever people say. Esp if your lo doesn't normally have it. My DS is having none of it until he's at least 4 or 5. Nor is anyone giving him nuts, honey or mushrooms. I don't care if I'm a nazi

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 27/12/2009 03:46

It's illegal to give under 5s chocolate?

Where is this dodgy advice published? My 15m licked baileys off of my little finger today and ate sherry triffle after christmas dinner!

My 3yr old had some watered down ale in his sippy cup (okay, was VERY watered down - still looked like water and sniffed like water)!

Tryharder · 27/12/2009 03:57

YABU. It's Christmas. And Whosleptinmyporridge... what on earth are wrong with nuts, honey and mushrooms???

I left a big tin of Roses in my kids room today in the hope that they and their cousins would finish them off so I am not forced to eat the lot myself. They haven't touched them though. BAH!

seeker · 27/12/2009 07:36

mushrooms? mushrooms? What the f's wrong with mushrooms????????

Arsed · 27/12/2009 07:50

Crazy crazy people ...

Mushrooooooms !?

Fruitbatlings · 27/12/2009 08:00

mushrooms?????????? W.T.F?

lilymolly · 27/12/2009 08:01

@ mushrooms nuts and honey!!

And at no choclate coins for 10 month olds......my ds rather enjoyed his choclate coin last night after his rather healthy lunch of lentil and ham broth and tea of pork and vegetables

some of you lot are mad!
