to hate the term 'kids'...

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 19:48

I never call my children 'kids' and slightly cringe inwardly if someone refers to my children as 'kids'.

Don't really know why I hate it so much, I just do...

Anyone else with me on this one?

Yeah, my mum.

notnowbernard · 11/12/2009 19:49

Not with you, no

Don't know why it grates for people

saltyseadog · 11/12/2009 19:52

I'm the reverse, I'm not a fan of people saying 'my children' - it sounds so formal. I half expect these children to call their parents mater and pater .

Tommy · 11/12/2009 19:56

I don't like it either - not really sure why!

notnowbernard · 11/12/2009 19:57

My friend gooes a step further - "THE children"

LittlewhiskersCat · 11/12/2009 19:57

I don't like it either.

Grandkids - that's worse though

BexJ78 · 11/12/2009 19:58

It is better than the bairns!!!!!

NightShoe · 11/12/2009 19:58

I don't like it either. They are children, not baby goats.

Lapsedrunner · 11/12/2009 20:00

yanbu

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 20:03

I quite like the ring of 'mater, I'm in the lavatory' when my 3 year old needs me to wipe her bottom

saltyseadog · 11/12/2009 20:04

Do your children wear frilly blouses and velvet pantaloons Heighho ?

mrsruffallo · 11/12/2009 20:04

The only thing worse is kiddie

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 20:05

Actually, only half kidding, I always say lavatory, not toilet

OP posts:
saltyseadog · 11/12/2009 20:10

Lavatory, toilet, loo - now we're onto a whole different debate

ElenorRigby · 11/12/2009 20:14

My dear old dad has always took exception to his children being described as baby goats!

notnowbernard · 11/12/2009 20:14

BOG round here

grenadine · 11/12/2009 20:16

YANBU - we have just received a Christmas card to grenadine and Mrgrenadine and "kids" - they can't have forgotten the children's names as they live in the same street!

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 20:36

ooh, am feeling all riled on your behalf, grenadine.

Am so glad it is not just me, everyone else I know calls their children kids. Am bringing dh round to my point of view though

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 20:39

I prefer the term 'sprogs' to 'kids'

Firawla · 11/12/2009 20:44

yabu i like it

Boys2mam · 11/12/2009 20:44

I got a christmas card today made out to "Boys2mam, DP and kids" - I was a bit that they couldn't be bothered to put my boys names in. Its not even that it was from a colleague or an acquaintance or anything so removed, it was a family member.

I don't normally mind the collective reference but this just seemed lazy to me.
