to hate the term 'kids'...

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 19:48

I never call my children 'kids' and slightly cringe inwardly if someone refers to my children as 'kids'.

Don't really know why I hate it so much, I just do...

Anyone else with me on this one?

Doesnt bother me. Hate kiddies though and tots (but thats only really used in the Sun).

I know someone who insists on referring to her children as the bratlings. I think thats horrible but she clearly loves them.

Hate rugrats, brats or the child (worse than the children somehow). My mum did try and dub (another the Sun word) DS1 as 'the boy' but I wouldnt have it. She probably read in a book somewhere (like when she wanted to be called 'Garnie' by my DCs )

HeighHoHoHo · 11/12/2009 20:47

Sprogs better than kids, but children best of all.

Maybe it's the way I say it, it just sounds a bit demeaning or slightly derogatory as if you can't be bothered to say the longer word, 'children'.

Ooh chegirl, you just made me shiver with horror at the thought of rugrats

Don't mind it

Do hate the way my sister and mum refer to my sisters and my DCs as 'the children', I'd rather use kids over this.

I tend to refer to my boys as the boys - not to sure what term I'd use if one was a girl (though i know for a fact it wouldn't be 'the children')

Washersaurus · 11/12/2009 20:54

I always say 'the boys'; heaven knows what I'll do if DC3 turns out to be a girl (unlikely I feel).

I do sometimes slip out 'kids' (and immediately myself) but I think that is because my dad always referred to us that way.

chegirlwithbellson · 11/12/2009 20:54

I blame that stupid cartoon. No one ever used it before that.

What's wrong with saying 'Can you bring the children into town and I'll meet you there?' or something. I have 2 daughters and 1 son, so can't say 'girls' or 'boys' Inserting 'kids' instead of 'children' just sounds a bit demeaning to me.

I hate the term "kids". It's so common. When I was growing up, my Mum used to say "Only goats have kids" - it's always stuck with me and I inwardly cringe whenever I hear it. I imagine "kids" to be snotty-nosed, shaved-headed, tracksuit-wearing brats whose parents drag them round shopping centres for entertainment.

Boys2mam how hideous that someone wrote it on a Christmas card! Don't send one back.

heidiburger · 11/12/2009 21:04

Definitely agree. Never liked myself, brother + friends being referred to as "kids" lots of vocab. available to avoid this surely?

abra1d · 11/12/2009 21:05

Hate kids. Hate people referring to 'mums' as a generic, too.

PotPourri · 11/12/2009 21:07

Don't really mind it, but I kinda know where you are coming from. I do HATE when people refer to a child as 'baby' - not your baby, my baby, the baby. Just baby - grrrr!

muggglewump · 11/12/2009 21:07

I have an only, so people can't really do that.
They just call her my daughter.

I do hate LOs, Bubs, Bubbies, Babas, and other similar twee crap though.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 11/12/2009 21:07

fgs, it's not common, everybody I know uses it and there is nothing derogatory about it AFAIK.

AmIreallysayingthis · 11/12/2009 21:38

Maybe you only know common people.

MrsMattie · 11/12/2009 21:39

Nah, I'm fine with kids and use it all the time.

'Parents' and 'parenting' are the main kid-related words I hate

grenadine · 11/12/2009 21:39

Sounds American or lazy English to me...can't see anything wrong with saying "the children".

Miggsie · 11/12/2009 21:40

My childhood friend's mother was a goat farmer...so when I hear the term "kids" I immediately think of goats!

I prefer to say child, as I am not a goat.

YABU.

Reserve your hate for something that matters.

abra1d · 11/12/2009 21:44

Oh I hate 'parenting' and 'to parent' as well.

brimfull · 11/12/2009 21:47

yabu

tis a term -deal with it

no biggie

SarfEasticated · 11/12/2009 21:55

I don't like it either and really dislike M&S for using it. It is inaccurate, kids are baby goats, my daughter is a child. I always thought it was just me, so am giddy at the thought that I am not alone in general fuddy-duddyness.

SarfEasticated · 11/12/2009 21:57

I do however like 'guttersnipe'

CristinaTheAstonishing · 11/12/2009 22:01

Don't be so literal about kids/baby goats and your life will be more pleasant as you won't cringe and make nasty assumptions everytime you hear it. YABU.

PurpleSofa · 11/12/2009 22:07

I always use children. Agree personally do not like kids.
