I'm genuinly interested in why you object to homosexuality, and everytime I ask on the other thread it gets lost in the general hubbub.

So - name change if you want, but please tell me what your objections are?

If it's because it's not natural or against biology, please expand your answer to include why you care about that.

Show your working for extra credit.

n.b. Don't bother if it's a religous justification, you'll need to find someone who believes in that kind of stuff to debate with as I'll just dismiss that out of hand. If you are a homopohbic religous person with a secular objection then please go ahead.

This should be enlightening (maybe) Not sure if anyone will want to identify themselves as a homophobe though, even with a namechange.

OhChristmasTEEOhChristmasTEE · 10/12/2009 17:37

Just marking the thread.

mumblechum · 10/12/2009 17:38

Oh. I thought you said homophones.

I do like a good Eng Lit discussion.

As you were.

OrmIrian · 10/12/2009 17:38

Well this should be interesting. I have always wondered...

I think you've scared them all away. You need to draw them out with some apparently innocuous remark. Shall I start....?

Gay men should be treated excatly the same as straight couples if they want to adopt or foster. Don't you agree?

ooojimaflip · 10/12/2009 17:45

If no one responds maybe we'll have to come up with a less pejorative noun.

Hi my name is kinnies, and I've been a homophobe for about ten mins.

BalloonSlayer · 10/12/2009 17:51

I thought it said homophones too.

Come on mumblechum, lets have some of your favourites.

Awe wee mite ewes sum too right on hear.

Rindercella · 10/12/2009 17:51

tick tock, tick tock...my, they are usually very vociferous! I wonder what's taking them so long?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 10/12/2009 17:57

DH is a 'homophobe'. In that his religion tells him it's 'wrong' but in reality he has gay friends, has been to gay pubs, worked at pride, and really isn't homophobic. He's conflicted
And that is why I'm an atheist.

Scarletti · 10/12/2009 17:59

I am straight woman ( so far) with a number of gay and bisexual relatives so I am always interested in this discussion. Most men who I have heard verbalise their dislike have directed it against the overt gay stereotype rather than the reality of most gay men. My FIL is horribly homophobic and distressingly seems to consider gay people as inferior and alien beings but I sure could never really explain his feelings. I have also wondered how he may react should one of his grandchildren are gay.
I have never heard a women being homophobic myself so maybe your response on Mumsnet will not be huge.

shallishanti · 10/12/2009 17:59

hmmm
maybe if you are homophobic you don't believe in or understand the term?
Like when men had to have sexism explained to them.
And, if you are homphobic you are peopbably also racist and sexist so you won'y have those concepts to build on, as it were.
So they're probably all thinking 'homophobia? pah! what nonsense will the loony left/liberal nazis/PC brigade think of next?' etc etc

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 10/12/2009 18:03

Some of best friends have homosexualfriends so I can't be one but

AIBU to think my kids will catch gaynessif they see some shagging each other randomly in park toilets?

Am a gay friendly (?? perhaps non bogoted would be better as a term) Christian with a degree innit n all so happy to take that on (well ntoa s DH'll shove me offPC in the mo but should I ever reclaim the keyboard....)

shallishanti · 10/12/2009 18:04

I do have a theory, though, that homophobia is often the result of heterosesual people's prurient imaginings of gay people's sexual practices, esp anal sex, which naturally they are doing ALL the time, and is icky. Just like young children think any sex is icky (to do with bottoms and so on)
So, my most generous interpretation of homophobia is that it's just a rather immature lack of imagination and ignorance.

ShinyAndNew · 10/12/2009 18:04

Kat, my DH is the same. He says it's wrong, but cannot explain why.

OTOH he has never been more than welcoming to my friend, and does like him. I think he was secretly relieved when he found out he was gay and therefore not a threat to our relationship. I haven't had the heart to tell him that he is actually bi-sexual.

Dh has his own gay friend too, who gets on with great. But he still insists that it's 'wrong'. So are lesbians. But he doesn't mind watching them

I have a close relative who is. He is outwardly a bigot and feels it is ok to use bigoted language of every kind.
I ignore it now as when I have challenged him he gets nasty.

He hasn't done it in front of my children but if he did I would ask him to leave. I hope he doesn't as it would cause a huge family rift.

HughRinal · 10/12/2009 18:13

I forgot reasons. He is intelligent but uneducated. By this I mean he doesn't read any books or newspaper. He has been in the same 'instututional' job for more than 20 years

MrsChemist · 10/12/2009 18:15

A while back I was waiting outside the queue to get into a club (a gay club) and the people in front of us weren't allowed in (members only)
They kicked off with the bouncers for a bit and then the girl in the group turned away and walked back down the line sneering at everyone, 'you're all gays and lezzers!'
No shit.
Makes me wonder why she wanted to go in in the first place, what with it being full of 'gays and lezzers', whom she obviously had a dislike for.
It was actually quite funny. Silly girl.

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 10/12/2009 18:16

PLenty of homophobic females sadly, which is why @Oi lesbian' is still used as a term of abuse

The ones I am thinking of stand outside a school with long oily hair, chain smoking over their buggies, muffin tops yelling 'Oi you F'in lesbian' at anyone they don't like, apparenlty under the assumption that all lesbians would fancy them and try to assault them.

As Dh says, they would need a very specific fetish to fancy them!

LaDiDaDi · 10/12/2009 18:16

Waiting for a response....

racmac · 10/12/2009 18:22

I always think that men that have a problem with gays think that if they are friends with a gay man they are going to automatically fancy them and want to jump them

Or perhaps they wonder if they might actually like it and dont want to like it IYSWIM

Blu · 10/12/2009 18:34

I am homo sapiens - does that count?
