In hating the term LO

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/11/2009 20:20

My very first AIBU.

I cannot stand the term Little One or LO. Its a phrase that is creeping out everywhere. Its so ugh and cutsie and twee. They are children. We don't need a euphemism for child.

lo has been used for ages doesn't particularly bother me

MaggieBelle · 21/11/2009 20:24

I'm not terribly keen on it, but to start off with , all the abbreviations seemed bizarre.

I don't like when it's part of a screen name though! like mycutesyLOs. But that is VU of me.

ramblingmum · 21/11/2009 20:24

I use it for the cat

groundhogs · 21/11/2009 20:25

Yes, sometimes it's a good alternative to DD, or DS, especially when posting and you can't be arsed to scroll back remember what OPs child's gender is.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/11/2009 20:28

thought I probably was. Ah well, don't mind being all grumpy by myself!

LetThereBeRock · 21/11/2009 20:30

I hate it too, almost as much as I detest 'bub' or 'bubs'.

AgentZigzag · 21/11/2009 20:30

YABU LO is informal and affectionate, but then saying that, I can't stand 'kid'

OrmIrian · 21/11/2009 20:31

But it's easier to type than children and I know that some people get irate about 'kids'.

CuppaTeaJanice · 21/11/2009 20:31

I hate the word 'tots'. so twee...

AgentZigzag · 21/11/2009 20:31

LTBR, isn't that just regional though? Like babby?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/11/2009 20:43

I'm ambivalent about the term 'kids'. Don't like 'ta' for thank you either. (gets it all out of system)

LetThereBeRock · 21/11/2009 20:45

It may be but it's still incredibly irritating imho.

DarrellRivers · 21/11/2009 20:46

Twee and irritating

Lotster · 21/11/2009 21:01

Hate LO, Tots, DAnything.

HTH!

ImSoNotTelling · 21/11/2009 21:04

DH refers to the children as "the little 'uns" sometimes. And very deliberately says "'uns" rather than "ones". It gives me a strong urge to pinch him hard on the scrotum. It's so....

(Disclaimer before everyone tells me to divorce him instantly - it is more or less the only thing he does that makes me want to pinch him hard on the scrotum)

paisleyleaf · 21/11/2009 21:07

Little one / little man / little 'uns
I don't really see what's wrong with them.

2shoes · 21/11/2009 21:07

yabu

monkeyfacegrace · 21/11/2009 21:09

Haha you would hate me, me and my OH call each other bubbagumpington.

KurriKurri · 21/11/2009 21:12

When I first read that abbreviation on here I had no idea what it stood for. Eventually worked out in my head it must be 'loved offspring', now I always read it as that.

sorry - just wittering- as you were.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 21/11/2009 21:14

OYBBK do you know what - i might have to disagree with you is that allowed ? I use it all the time. But mostly when I can't remember if someone is talking about their DS or their DD! Or if I don't want some-one to know I am talking about my DD specifically.

busybutterfly · 21/11/2009 21:15

Thank God for this thread, had absolutely no idea what it meant on the other thread

Tidey · 21/11/2009 21:16

What about when it stands for Loafing Onanist? Like, 'I hate my neighbour, he's always staring at my bedroom window, he's a complete LO'?

I've spent too much time here, clearly.

Bobo23 · 21/11/2009 21:21

Aarrgh TOT is just vile. Fine when it refers to a small drink of whisky tho. LO is fine but now I can't get the loafing onanist out of my head.

hf128219 · 21/11/2009 21:26

Kids is the absolute worst. Children are not baby friggin' goats.

ProcessYellowC · 21/11/2009 21:28

Loved Offspring! Brilliant

I think YABU to think that children should always be called such. It just sounds quite formal and detached, what teachers and doctors call them rather than their parents. It would be interesting to know children's views.

So how do you feel about kiddywinkle?
