To think that the welfare state is too generous if people in council flats have way more stuff than those on middle income can afford (no really lets have a discussion)

Maybe it's where I live (central london) maybe it's me (hmm, I don't think so) and It's definitely something that's been ruminating around my head for a while. An argument I've tried to unpick but I always come to the same conclusion.

I'm sure I'm going to be lynched but I'm keen to get other people's perspective on this....Here we go...

Where I live private housing is expensive and intermingled with social housing. It's hard to tell the difference between the social housing and the private dwellings. Certainly on the open market they fetch very similar prices. I'm feeling grumpy because we (DH and I) pay a lot of tax which goes to the people down the road in social housing, of course we should pay tax to support those on low earnings BUT, it does start to grate when though people in subsidised housing seem to have much bigger disposable incomes. eg. everyone I know who lives in the council flats near us can afford a car, we cannot. They can afford several holidays per year, we cannot

Isn't the welfare state just a bit too generous to enable those on low incomes to afford more than those on higher incomes? Surely the point of welfare isn't to subsidise cars or 42inch TVs.

I'm sure I'll be told to move out of London if I want more but this doesn't address the issue that I'm raising. Why should I subsidise people living in central london when I cant afford to live here myself.

Analogy moment....

I have 5k and would like to buy a car, instead I'm forced to give up my 5k to the government, who instead gives it to someone else so that they can buy a car. Boo hoo!!!

Go on let the stoning begin!!!!

"In some countries, if you are in public housing or on the 'dole' you are not 'allowed' to go abroad on holidays. Even IF you have the money to do so."

Yes. And in some countries, they stone you to death for adultery and the age of consent is 9.

So your point was...?

Kaloki · 17/11/2009 16:12

Splodge have you ever tried claiming for government subsidised housing?

"ooo I forgot the pre-cut fruit - cor riven do you remember that really nice lunch we had out in that little place in Bristol a few months back - that was really nice that was (we won't tell them that we used "their" money to pay for it will we wink)"

Oooh oops! hides the caviar

tethersend · 17/11/2009 16:15

Good luck buying a family home in central London on 45k, OP

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 16:15

edam - can I have the TV

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE

I'd cook the beans, toast the bread, and then boil the egg. Mash the egg up (goes further than scrambling the "normal" way) and divide between 2 of them. Then I'd give 3 of them 2 or 3 spoons of beans and the 2 that had the egg just one small spoon each . Then I'd cut the toast into quarters, give them 1 each and scoff the left over myself

splodge2001 · 17/11/2009 16:15

mrsmorgan - im glad u can get a new washer - mine broke months ago - i still cant afford a new one

I live in Council housing 9so shoot me) our Bathroom is disgusting and is dangerous to my children due to all the mould and mildew in it. We are having a new bathroom put in and i couldn't even get a shower for my son (easier to wash him in) let alone a farking Bidet!

It is simply not true OP, no one i know lives on benifits and has a luxury lifestyle.

Since we're now ranting, what pisses me off is that my children can go through school, in theory sitting next to the same child all the way through, primary, secondary. Have all the same teaching. But then when it comes to uni applications, they, under current proposals will be given preference, and an offer 2 grades lower than my child for the SAME course at the SAME institution with the SAME previous education, because of what we earn.

never mind the fact that we probably won't be able to afford the uni fees because they have put them up to enable children from lower income families to go. I have no problem with enabling more children to go to uni. I do have a problem when that means that the people in the middle CANNOT go, because only the richest who it doesn't touch, and the poorest who get it paid for can access uni. That doesn't seem like a fair system to me.

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 16:20

guess what splodge - my bathroom wall is wet. No not damp and mouldy -actually wet to touch - actually it's sodden at the moment because of the rain over the weekend. It's been like it for 5 years it's taking ever last drop of heat from the radiator that's on that wall, and it's got 3 outside walls with no cavity insulation so is fucking freezing as well as smelling horrible , I'm on benefits - and no-one is coming to fix it for me.

Booo hoo.

GypsyMoth · 17/11/2009 16:21

Was splodge not popular with her observation then?? Not read whole thread as I' m on my iPod!! (yes, have one, even though I'm on benefits)

halfcut · 17/11/2009 16:21

FFS ..I live in a council house ...I work ,My dp works can't remember the last holiday we had...and shock horror my dd is a single parent who lives in a council house ..she works as well ..why would you be envious of people on low incomes and benefits? Its the rich fuckers I'm jealous of

Kaloki · 17/11/2009 16:23

"hey titsalina - sounds like my bathroom - and guess what no one is gonna come and refurbish it"

The government aren't exactly strong on fixing unsafe council housing. I'm going to try and find an article that I saw a while back on the state of council housing and how far most couincil housing is from being hospitable.

Also think of it this way, if you are renting provately (I know owning is different) you can move to a better house. If you are in council housing moving is difficult unless you can find someone to swap with you. One of my friends was living in council housing when her mum died, and as she was now living alone there and it wasn't in her name she was told to find someone to swap with or be kicked out. Still jealous?

Kaloki · 17/11/2009 16:24

Also, hospitable was the wrong word. I'm not typing well today.

splodge2001 · 17/11/2009 16:24

will tune in when i get back around 6

loving the discussion

Riven we just got a cooker from Famiyl FUnd after being without one for ages, what lowlife spongers we are with our disabled children and benifits...

MrsMorgan · 17/11/2009 16:25

Oh fgs so now I shouldn't even be able to buy a new washing machine ??? I only can because my mum manages to get a 0% credit card and buy it for me with me making the repayments.

Basically splodge what is pissing you off is that people living on benefits can do anything more than exist.

wtf - people on benefits exist - she's already said that her MUM bought the washing machine for her and she's paying it off. No doubt if she'd had more time she could have put that money aside each week/month and bought it some time in 2014

Oi EDAM are you depriving me of my TV coz i iz on benfits
