You must iron some things, like shirts and uniforms?

go on admit it

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 13/11/2009 12:54

@ Reality - excellent tips!

VinegarTits · 13/11/2009 12:54

Its like you're (correct grammar for Trill) all proud that you dont iron

'oh i have seen the iron in years, i think we used to have one once, i cant remember how to switch it on though (you just plug it in dear)'

Oh ironing is so last year darlink

Scruffs

lljkk · 13/11/2009 12:57

Is "Scruffy" the new Chav? Fair game to denigrate, and all that?

And why should I give a Fig what anyone else thinks of my appearance?

True Confession: Yes I regularly iron -- the Hama bead creations.

sincitylover · 13/11/2009 12:58

I don't own an iron, don't look crumpled and feel if you pull things into shape or tumble dry then they are fine.

Don't have a washing line either because I'm out at work all day so it's dark when I get back.

DS1s white cotton shirts just hung on a hanger job done. DS2 polo and track bottoms tumbled dried.

Must be a reaction to mother who irons everything - towels, socks the lot and exh who was very OCD about image, clean lines(put nothing in his pockets), blowdrying his very short hair, bankrolled the local drycleaners to the point it became an enormous turn off.

I'm clean, tidy and smart without ironing anything.

weegiemum · 13/11/2009 13:00

I iron

  1. For Weddings, Christenings, Funerals

  2. Dcs school shirts, for assemblies and trips (when they wear a tie rather than a polo shirt

  3. Hama Beads.

Last time I got the ironing table out dd2 (5) said "Mummy what is that long funny table for?

Scruffy and Proud!

gorionine · 13/11/2009 13:00

I iron everything exept socks and underwear but still look scruffy

VinegarTits · 13/11/2009 13:02

What are hama beads?

Why is it ok to iron for weddings? do people recognise you at them?

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 13/11/2009 13:03

Only on Mumsnet could you have a thread about ironing that turns heated.

VinegarTits · 13/11/2009 13:04

You only think you look clean tidy and smart because you are so used to being crumpled

Other people wont think that

NaccetyMac · 13/11/2009 13:05

I am a proud scruff bag. I was scruffy before it was trendy.

Honestly don't iron, and am totally about that. I do have minor shame when my Mum visits and points out that the Stuff Under The Sofa has reached critical mass though.

I've had to stop trying to be clean and tidy, my constant failure was making me sad.

upahill · 13/11/2009 13:05

Crikey No Ironing??
That would be a lovely world to live in. Every Sunday night DH Irons school uniforms and his work clothes and anything I might need. During the week who ever is around gets on and sorts the ironing out as we have learned from past expierence if it's not done quickly the next lot of washing is soon out and things pile up quickly but No Ironing ever???? I feel quite dreamy about that thought.

Lancelottie · 13/11/2009 13:07

Oooh, ooh -- did anyone else's parents have a vast thing like a steam mangle, where you slowly fed sheets, trousers and anything else you could think of through a pair of giant padded rollers, and it sort of oozed out the other side with knife-edge creases in often very strange places?

Or have I, as DH suspects, hallucinated the entre thing, including its departure after it fell over on the boy next door (and probably squeezed him out the other side in the manner popularized by Flat Stanley)?

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 13/11/2009 13:08

Thinking about it, I will need to dig the iron out to do DS's name tags (at the moment I write on his clothes in magic marker)

lifeistooshort · 13/11/2009 13:12

Thanks for the tips so no tumble drier on more than 800 spins. Half full tumble drier and then shake and either hang or fold straightaway.

I shall definitely give that a go!!

chickbean · 13/11/2009 13:16

PerArduaAdNauseum - sorry if someone has already mentioned this, lost the will to live halfway through the ironing thread (so will quite understand if you don't read this). Washing has been transformed for me by the purchase of "sockies" - they are little plastic things that look like a bike with no handlebars - you stick a sock in each wheel when you put them in the laundry basket and never have to pair socks again. Got my last lot from Lakeland.

Iron as little as I can get away with - and have even infected my mother, who was a committed ironer - she now irons about half as much as she did. My little bit for the environment

Fleecy · 13/11/2009 13:19

I don't usually iron - I wear tight clothes instead

EdgarAllenPoo · 13/11/2009 13:23

i don't iron. i don't generally wear things that need ironing.

M&S Ultimate Non-iron shirts hang dry very nicely for DH (though i think as a profesional man heshould iron them anyway)

and my work doesn't demand me to wear shirts (jumpers hang dry without creasing)

i am scruffy, but that is more to do with having hair that is very untameable than my clobber.

tiawomt · 13/11/2009 13:27

The iron in our house is known as 'Daddy's iron' and when he went out to buy it found the one with the highest steam producing capacity possible. So not only do i not do the ironing, if i sit in the same room i can get a sauna for free .

PerArduaAdNauseum · 13/11/2009 13:27

Mmm chickbean - looks good... Might have to get a couple of packs and retrain DS...

VinegarTits · 13/11/2009 13:30

where do you get these marvellous clothes that dont need ironing, nearly everything that come out of my machine and drier is still slightly crumpled to some degree

OP posts:
nikki1978 · 13/11/2009 13:30

Blimey do some people need a step ladder to get down off their high horses?

Who gives a crap what other people do? My mum irons everything she can get her hands on but I don't iron anything. Why? Well I have a very busy life and no time during the day to do it - two kids, housework, shopping, chores etc. In the evening I exercise and/or study which takes a couple of hours. Sure I could spend the last hour before bed ironing while watching TV. However firstly I am not a work horse and secondly I would rather spend an hour cuddling and spending a bit of time with DH. Tis slightly more important to me. I do iron DDs school uniform in the morning which takes 5 minutes but if were to iron everything there is no way it would take 5 mins each day. More like half an hour.

DH doesn't wear shirts as he works from home. I don't wear shirts either. Everything else tumbledries to a smooth enough finish for me.

My mum loves to nag me about ironing though - especially not ironing Dcs clothes. They are not scruffy so who cares? It is not like I am not brushing their teeth or washing their hair! But then I am not as obsessed by peoples appearance as my mum is.

VinegarTits · 13/11/2009 13:35

'cuddling DH'

poor crumpled dc, do you brush their hair or leave it crumpled to go with the 'look'?

OP posts:
juneybean · 13/11/2009 13:37

I don't iron lol

Crazycatlady · 13/11/2009 13:48

I never used to iron a great deal, but then I realised how much better my clothes looked ironed and was converted...

There are things in the house that I don't bother ironing - towels, underwear, socks, some items of gym kit. The rest gets ironed.

With a steam generator and a proper sized ironing board I now do one ironing session per week, for one hour. During this time I get all my, DH's and DD's clothes ironed and our bed linen. We have nice looking clothes, comfortable bedsheets and I don't spend my entire life ironing. I love the smell and feel of freshly ironed linen and clothes.

I am intrigued about these clothes and bed sheets that don't need ironing, what are they if they are not fleece or cheap polyester?

fernie3 · 13/11/2009 13:51

shirts get ironed a some tops but thats pretty much it.
