You must iron some things, like shirts and uniforms?

go on admit it

OP posts:
nikki1978 · 13/11/2009 13:52

Blimey you must have a lovely relationship!

My childrens hair is beautifully done I'll have you know

Anyway as I said the tumble drier makes their clothes good as ironed. My mum just gets upset that you can't sharpen a knife on the pleats of their trousers

But my mum definitely is a bit OCD

sodit · 13/11/2009 13:53

i dont iron i press bought a steam press cos i have arthritis. i have always hated ironing and never did it, now i love doing it as i can sit and be all smug and dp has to bring me tea!! i think everyone should have one.

tiawomt · 13/11/2009 13:53

Crazycatlady - Its all in the hang and the fold technique - that and being prepared to ignore small crease misdemeanors until they drop out once on.

seaglass · 13/11/2009 13:56

I only ever iron if I'm going out, so that's, um, twice a year?
Whenever we do get the iron out, the children are sooo excited - it's worth being crumpled and scruffy for the joy on their little faces at some strange new gadget

Fibilou · 13/11/2009 13:57

But Nikki, why can't you see that comments like
"However firstly I am not a work horse and secondly I would rather spend an hour cuddling and spending a bit of time with DH. Tis slightly more important to me"

are just as irritating and patronising to people that iron as us saying your clothes must look crumpled ? It's OK to criticise people that prefer things to look smart and fresh and to somehow infer that we are all joyless Stepford clones that would rather iron than do something else. I have a friend who doesn't iron but sits in front of the TV all night. As I don't have a TV and spend my evenings doing various activities it's not as if she's spending the time that I spend ironing in some particularly thrilling way, just watching Eastenders.

Docbunches · 13/11/2009 13:57

I'm extremely lazy around the house, but I do strangely quite enjoy ironing and I like my DCs to look smart for school. I don't have space for a tumble drier, so just use an outside line to dry things, or drape stuff over radiators.

I don't iron towels or bedlinen though, much to my mother's disgust, who irons absolutely everything.

I know lots of people who never iron and I can't say I ever notice them looking scruffy, tbh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/11/2009 14:01

i generally dont iron - though do rarely for weddings etc

have an ironing lady at work so children arent scruffy

my dh and i look very presentable!!!

clothes go in tumble dryer, fold and look nice

Crazycatlady · 13/11/2009 14:02

I fear tiawomt I may be verging on OCD which manifests itself in a hawk-eye for creases. That and I am crap at folding anything that hasn't just been ironed. (Impatient)...

I can pick out which of my friends iron and don't iron very easily just by looking at them. Obviously I would never ever mention it; choosing to iron or not iron is so unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but I do wonder sometimes if they know how scruffy their clothes look!

Fibilou · 13/11/2009 14:03

And why is there this assumption that because you're ironing you're not spending time with your DH ? I don't tend to iron in the garden so I am still in the same place as I would be if I wasn't ironing. Therefore I can still talk to DH just as well as if I wasn't ironing.

IdrisTheDragon · 13/11/2009 14:07

We used to put all the clothes to be ironed in a basket. Then everything would overflow. When things did get ironed they would then get crumpled in the wardrobe.

Now everything gets put away and ironing happens on a need to wear basis. This makes life much less stressful.

Hama beads also get ironed lol

bb99 · 13/11/2009 14:08

I don't iron DH shirts - only buy him the same easy care ones he had when a singleton. Wash, flick, shake and hang to dry. Suits get done at the dry-cleaners and he's always been scruffier than me when not at wok anyway. Dcs uniform is easy care as well - flick, hang, smooth and dry. I have put the ironing board at the back of the garage I use it so seldomly. Think it is a Victorian torture invention, to cause more work and guilt for women as having 'flat clothes' is largely a social concept. BUT, if you enjoy ironing, then I am more than happy for you to have fun

I do iron about 4-6 times a year for special 'going out' days eg Christmas, and some family birthdays.

Am very scruffy tho - tend to wear as much linen on the trouser department as poss, as of course this is supposed to have a naturally rumpled look and mummy t-shirts, jeans and long sleeved t-shirts do dry quite flat if pulled and hung/laid out to dry, especially if got out of the machine straight away.

Always consider myself an eco-warrior, as I am saving all that incredibly expensive electricity and time, so I can sit at the computer all day

IdrisTheDragon · 13/11/2009 14:09

No tumble drier by the way

TrillianAstra · 13/11/2009 14:10

Oooh, such defensiveness from the ironers

I don't iron because I don't want to.

IMO the pain of ironing is greater than the pleasure that would be grained from havng ironed. The answer will be difference for everyone because we judge differently how annoying it is to do the ironing, and how worthwhile it is to have ironed clothes.

It's the same judgement you make about every household chore. Is it better to not do it and have it not done, or better to do it and have it be done?

nikki1978 · 13/11/2009 14:11

Calm down I am not critising anyone! I just said the reason I don't iron is literally the only time I have free is that hour in the evening.

Nor did I infer as stated in another post that people who iron don't spend time with their DHs.

I was giving MY reasons for not ironing. You are reading more into my post than is their. The only person I am critising is my mother but I think I am quite at liberty to do so

If other people want to iron go for it. I just thought it was unfair of some to critise those who didn't. And I repeat I did not critise anyone in my post.

So there :p

nikki1978 · 13/11/2009 14:12

There I mean

Dammit!

youwontlast · 13/11/2009 14:14

How do you all fit everything in the drawers if they are not nice and flat?
I like a bit of ironing, we have an ironing basket for the dc's clothes that is empyied and ironed on a sunday, and i iron dp and my clothes and put away daily.
Crisp clothes are nice to wear, but i don't notice if someone else is crumpled.

nikki1978 · 13/11/2009 14:14

criticising I mean

Double dammit!

missorinoco · 13/11/2009 14:16

I'm a bit baffled. Why do people care if I iron or not?

(And if you're wondering if I do, at the moment, rarely. It gets covered in baby sick usually as fast as it goes on me.)

giddykipper · 13/11/2009 14:19

I don't iron because I hate ironing. If DH wants a shirt for work he irons it (along with DSD's school blouses). I wear chiffon blouses or jumpers for work. Nothing else gets ironed, but it's all hung to dry, or tumble dried, and honestly it doesn't look crumpled. TBH though, we're a jeans and hoodie type house anyway and some things look better unironed!

ShowOfHands · 13/11/2009 14:21

I don't even know where the iron is. In a cupboard somewhere presumably.

I don't look crumpled. My homemade, tie-dyed, patchwork ensembles disguise creases very well.

I don't wear make-up either.

Point and laugh. I care not. I spent half an hour eating gingerbread this morning instead of ironing. I win frankly.

Stigaloid · 13/11/2009 14:24

I never iron - dh does the ironing in our house as he is the one who needs ironed shirts. I am rubbish at ironing and can never do it properly.

lisasimpson · 13/11/2009 14:26

but alot of clothes I/kids have aren't supposed to be tumble dried - do others take notice of the labels? or just tumble everything regardless?

BexieID · 13/11/2009 14:26

I do DPs shirts and most clothes. Never done sheets though. I noticed our new shower curtain says to iron it when you wash it. Anyone else iron shower curtains?

lucykate · 13/11/2009 14:26
