You must iron some things, like shirts and uniforms?

go on admit it

My mother and sister are ironing obsessives, they iron every thing and spend large amounts of time doing it! I rarely iron, DH irons his uniform (hes a fire fighter ) and he irons the girls uniforms at the same time. The only thing I iron is a dress if im going out which is rare

I can think of a million more things i would rather do then iron.

I'm not sure where our iron is, which is v annoying b/c I wanted to iron some leaves in wax paper with DS.

So...yes, I am a scruff bag with a house that is in such a state that I can't even locate my own never-used iron. Guilty as charged!

Well, in my defense most kids don't wear uniforms here.

CheerfulYank · 15/11/2009 08:33

Riven, what beauties your DC are! (Sorry, it's very late here and I am bored so am reading everyone's profiles and looking at their pics. )

I suppose the question is ironing in essence a vanity and you'd be better off washing the feet of the poor etc or is it a labour of love showing your devote service as in effect a servant to your family or it is some kind of higher calilng or just a complete waste of time and something which women with brains who earn a lot and indeed men tend to delegate if they do it at all.

NowtonTelly · 15/11/2009 11:21

I iron as little as possible - maybe a few items a week. I am not scruffy . I don't understand people who have a huge pile of ironing to do on a weekly basis. I mean, what on earth are you ironing??

usamama · 15/11/2009 14:21

Good heavens...really???? REALLY????

I do not iron unless it is absolutely necessary. My husband irons his own shirts for work, because HE is the one wearing them. I have a 3 year old, a 2 year old, and I recycle and compost like mad to offset the environmental impact of my tumble drier which I will NOT live without because of the 3 year old and 2 year old...if a tumble drier means I can spend more time with them instead of standing at an ironing board, then the environment will have to suffer for me wanting to hang with the kids!

I was a teacher, I am now a graduate student, and I've never looked 'scruffy'...I've not been allowed to in my occupation. I do not live in fleece...I just buy quality things that don't need to be ironed. I have too much of a life to stand around ironing sheets...if they are a bit wrinkled, I will live just fine, and so will the rest of the family!!!

DottyDot · 15/11/2009 14:26

We moved house just over a year ago and I only found our iron about 3 weeks ago! I work full time as a business manager (so am supposed to be fairly smart), dp wears shirts at work and we have 2 ds's at school and not a thing gets ironed...

We don't have a tumble dryer but we do hang everything up to dry as soon as it's out of the washing machine and somehow it seems to be fine.

I don't think we look particularly crumpled - or if we do I've got so used to it I don't notice!

I think my non ironing stance is backlash from my childhood when my Mum would (and still does) iron anything that didn't move - including knickers and socks... I just don't get why people would spend time ironing when there are loads of other things to do - life's tooooo short!

busybutterfly · 15/11/2009 14:34

Non iron shirts for DH.
Put stuff straight on rads/hang up from washing machine.
Tumble dry rest.
Oh and Vinegar get a life

colditz · 15/11/2009 14:36

I never iron.

I can't be bothered.

foldng clothes the second the tumble drier stops is the way to go.

I persuaded my houseproud friend to stop wasting her life ironing by demonstrating how uncrumpled folded clothes really are.

busybutterfly · 15/11/2009 14:40

My friend gave me a big bag of clothes in beautiful condition for my DD.

I said a big thank you to her for ironing it all.

She said she hadn't ironed any of it, just folded it damp

thumbwitch · 15/11/2009 14:40

I very rarely iron, honestly. But I hang all my washing up to dry so most of the creases fall out of the creasy-type clothes, and most of our clothes are of the generally non-creasy type anyway. I don't like tumble driers.

When either of us (or DS for that matter) needs a shirt, I will of course iron it, usually just prior to wearing it - I never iron just after washing as the chances are it will get creased again before wearing.

If I am making an item of clothing (a very rare event) the iron is out most of the time for seam pressing [smug].

But generally I avoid clothes that need lots of ironing BECAUSE I hate it.

I too cannot see why people feel the need to iron every last little thing, including pants and baby socks - why???

And no, I don't look scruffy.

Quattrofangs · 15/11/2009 14:41

I don't iron - although ours is not an ironing free house as our cleaning lady does all the ironing.

The only things that get ironed are 15 shirts a week (5 each for DH and the DCs) and a few tops. I've never thought of ironing bedclothes, I mean why would you? Don't they come out with hardly any creases anyway?

I possess hardly any clothes that need ironing. Usually wear suits for work. I don't iron suits - they end up shiny if you do.

busybutterfly · 15/11/2009 14:43

Hi tw, which thread are we going to next?!
DH upstairs reading, DD in bed (teething) and DS's at in-laws. So I am doing nothing!

(Do have a pile of stuff in the tumbledryer though!!)

colditz · 15/11/2009 14:45

PS unless you use a solarpowered iron, critisising tumble dryer use is hypocritical.

pecanpie · 15/11/2009 14:46

In answer to the OP... I am crumpled. I do not iron. Shirts and tablecloths are ironed but frankly no time in the day for anything else. Sleep on crumpled sheets.

thumbwitch · 15/11/2009 14:48
  • dunno, looks like we have similar tastes though! See if we meet at the next one...
usamama · 15/11/2009 15:13

thanks very much for that PS, colditz...I feel much mlore justified about my tumble drier now!! LOL

Undercovamutha · 15/11/2009 15:39

DH irons his own shirts (the only household chore he does!). I iron probably about 20 items a year (DDs party dress and the odd 'going out' top of mine). EVerything else is either de-creased in the tumble-dryer, or worn creased!!!

CrystalQueen · 15/11/2009 15:45

I like ironing, at least I did when I was a child (it was better than doing the dusting) but that was when my mum told me what to do! Now I am a grownup and neither dust nor iron - I just buy clothes that don't really need ironed. I suppose if I had a job where appearances mattered more then I would iron my work clothes. I don't think I look particularly crumpled, and surely sheets get crumpled when you lie on them so I don't see the point of ironing them either. Frankly after working all day, I would rather do something fun!
