I find the problem with this kind of debate is that Xenia throws in attitudes and opinions that are so wrong on many levels, its hard to unpick her prejudices, so we end engaging as if we actually believe there is an argument to answer.

It feels a bit like trying to explain to someone teleported from the 50s that racism is really not a nice thing at all, or that homophobia is not acceptable anymore.

Social mobility is the lifeblood of any society. Xenia's anachronistic view of how society should work is totally out of kilter with the modern world.

It's so truly appalling that anyone would still harbour these feudal views about society, I am beginning to understand why most people avoid threads like this entirely.

If it were anyone other than Xenia, the shrieks of troll would be echoing around the halls on MN.

Mme D, Xenia is a well-respected lawyer and I have absolutely no doubt that she is actually posting what she thinks. Simply because that Xenia's mode of thought is alien to you does not make her a troll.

But I don't see what you have seen in Xenia's posts. Where has she argued against social mobility?

actually contentious and inflammatory for the purposes of creating discord does equal troll. We do not know if that is Xenia's aim, but I would almost rather it were rather than have to contemplate a world in which those attitudes have any kind of currency at all.

She might be a a very good lawyer but I certainly don't respect her opinions one little bit.

Being an adept practitoner of law does not equal deserving of cringing toadying on an open forum.

MmeD - I think SM is right. You see Xenia's posts and the red mists descend. Truly her thoughts are relatively normal for her environment. And although I don't often agree with Xenia, I'm glad that she posts here to show us her world. Which as you say, is a very different world.
