I can't understand why so many other people say "sorry, I can't do links" on posts. It's dead easy - I am really thick and I can do it.

Look .... it tells you how to do them in a big section on the right called Links.

Right, I want everybody who says they can't do links to have a practice right here, right now...And don't be coming on here saying you can't do links again. Got that?

I have been here four years and up until around two years ago, before MN changed it, I could do them. Now however, my link attempts make threads look messy, so I just do the thingy ma bobby. So yes YABU

RustyBear · 24/10/2009 17:24

Maybe they are posting from a phone? I had a phase of saying 'sorry I can't do links' before the iPhone software upgrade gave me cut & paste.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 24/10/2009 17:25

I had to have a Masterclass from Mo before I could do links

So ner

PuppyMonkey · 24/10/2009 17:27

I think we should have a proper Masterclass, that would be a good thing. I think Johnny Depp could front a MN video on how to do it frankly.

Meg - I found the old way easy too!
But honestly once you get the hang of it the new way is far far easier

open a new window for the new website
Copy the address in the MN message box as below

www.worldwideshoppingmall.co.uk/toys/early-learning-numeracy.asp

Delete the bit and put instead then add some amusing/boring comment followed by eg here]]

So here

LauraIngallsWilder · 24/10/2009 17:31

Ta da - it worked

purepurple · 24/10/2009 17:39

YANBU
But I can only do links on Mumsnet
how do I do them on an email or whispers other forums?

mwahahahamwahahahallyroger · 24/10/2009 17:42

YANBU

RustyBear · 24/10/2009 17:44

Ooh - that first image is from my web album - I photoshopped the T shirt onto the bat!

CherylVole · 24/10/2009 17:45

YANBU
i think we need zero tolerance on link incompetents

ChunkyKitKat · 24/10/2009 17:45

I am a technophobe, so this is the talking to I need. Here goes: www.statistics.gov.uk. Not that it's interesting to anyone, just practising.

LauraIngallsWilder · 24/10/2009 17:47

Yay chunkykitkats - tis easy when you know how

nowwhatdoido · 24/10/2009 17:48

No, it's not difficult, but it is a rather long winded and old-fashioned way of doing it, compared to most other internet forums. But all part of Mumsnet's charm I suppose.

mwahahahamwahahahallyroger · 24/10/2009 17:50

oh rusty, are you going to sue me for breach of copyright?
I used to have a copy og Soupy's original on my desktop but is seems to have gone

JackBauWooohooohoowaaer · 24/10/2009 17:56

I can't do links from my phone as it doesn't have brackets

MegSophandEmma · 24/10/2009 18:09

this ones bodged up www.worldwideshoppingmall.co.uk/toys/early-learning-numeracy.asp

MegSophandEmma · 24/10/2009 18:09

PMSL Thats it never again

TrickOrNinks · 24/10/2009 18:13

Laura I'm sure I don't delete the bit thus, nope, it's here in my preview box.

Is that what you have to do when you're using a phone though?

I'm always really impressed with people who write posts from their phones on the train or whatever.

RustyBear · 24/10/2009 18:22

molly - if anyone owns the copyright, it's the University of Hawaii. I don't know if anyone's ever told them their bat has become an MN icon...

LauraIngallsWilder · 24/10/2009 18:30

Trick that worked perfectly

Try try again Meg

ChunkyKitKat · 24/10/2009 18:48

Laura, excuse me for being dopey. So if I wanted to link this page it would be www.mumsnet.com/talk/AmIBeingUnreasonable/to find it easy to do links on MN?

LauraIngallsWilder · 24/10/2009 18:51

I dont think you can link to a page you are on - that would confuse it surely!

RustyBear · 24/10/2009 18:53

Yes you can

Pumpkinbummum · 24/10/2009 18:54

I don't need to delete anything either,
I just open new tab and copy the whole address bar
and then paste it inbetween

so YANBU

Tee2072 · 24/10/2009 19:00

Look:

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by and . So if you type www.mumsnet.com, the link will display as www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at this page", would display "Look at this page".

Just like it says over there --->>>>>

I agree, it is so annoying when people say they can't do links. Can you read? Then you can do a link.
