To be annoyed with my MIL for giving my children sugary lollipops

My MIL came to stay recently. I took the children to school/pre-school and she left the house later to 'miss the traffic'. When we got back after school she had left them two very big, very sugary, very full of E numbers, lollipops on the kitchen table with a note to them saying that they could have them if they were good and ate their tea. They are 4 and 2, and declined to read the note. Instead, they were very excited and wanted to eat the lollipops straightaway. A big battle then commenced as I told them they couldn't have them until after tea. Lovely! Just what I wanted after a day at work - some quality time with my wailing children. Why could she have left a note for me, and left them somewhere out of sight??! Sometimes I find it amazing that she actually had children of her own. AAARGH!

I hope you didn't give them the lollipops after tea? They were not good so they don't get the lollies? Right?

Wouldn't bother me because DS learned pretty early on that I can be negotiated with but he needs to keep his end of the deal.

FGS get a grip woman. Grandmothers are supposed to spoil their grandchildren, it's the law!

She obviously didn't think they'd make a big fuss about getting them before tea, so maybe thank her but say next time could she hide them or give them to you on the quiet.

pick your battles

if they were going to get the lollipops after tea, you can't take the moral high ground about them being given sugary lollies by MIL

Mine had two lollies in the bath this morning, only way I could get the cherub in. (not regular occurance although I am partial to abit of chocolate button bribary)

They're sweets, not congealed rat poison. She was trying to do something nice and you're being picky and rather unpleasant, sorry.

"Sometimes I find it amazing that she actually had children of her own." Because she doesn't do things the way you do? I do hope that there is history to this because going by the OP alone you sound very anti your MIL.

What sort of lollies were they?

Depending on how long tea was going to take, if they would only manage a few licks, it would hardly spoil their tea!

I´m perhaps one of the first to pick fault with MILs, but I see this as a nice gesture, tbh, & if you´re kids kick off, it´s not her fault, especially as she had put "if you´re good".

hmm, yes, maybe I was BU, does sound a bit over the top now I read it back.... but if they had eaten them, they would not have eaten their tea and then would have been on a huge sugar high for hours. It was just annoying being put into an unnecessarily confrontational position, when all I wanted to have some nice time with them. Also, my 2 year old is v v bad at brushing her teeth so I would never buy her anything like that.

I know I sound ridiculous, but they were massive! About 10cm in diameter!

OK, a lollipop that size I might have an issue with - I'd probably break a bit off and they could have that. A regular lollipop for after dinner - no problem.

if they'd been well-behaved then fair enough, yabu, but they didn't behave and had tantrums, so yanbu.

DD(10) got one of those when she was 5ish. She's still got it! Honestly, your kids would NEVER have managed to eat it before tea, it takes years to finish one of those

It is very trivial-just pick them up and say 'how nice of gran-I will put them away until later'. Put them in a cupboard and don't discuss it further. If they keep on look surprised and tell them they were for after tea.

Blimy is that all! Its a one off, were you not a kid once, did you not have lollies or treats once in a while. Mabey for the 2 year old its a bit too young to have hard sweets. Eat it yourself, thats what i would do well for my 2 year old i would and have done when people have given her hard teeth breaking sweets.
