that 13 is a bit young to have a belly button pierced?

Picked DD up from a friend's house last night. Asked friend if she would like to go swimming at the weekend. Friend said no, I had my belly button pierced on Saturday and don't think it is a good idea to go swimming just yet (lifted up top to show me belly button bar).

I think my jaw just dropped. That is too young isn't it? I am not just an old fart am I?

Btw, as soon as dd got in the car I said 'don't even ask'

yes. imo it is.

bigchris · 13/10/2009 10:58

yanbu

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 13/10/2009 11:00

Way too young. At least I suppose its not permenent like a tattoo though.

thedollshouse · 13/10/2009 11:00

I agree with you.

My great niece had hers pierced at 11 with the consent of her mother. They told the person doing it that she was older (I think you have to be 14). I was speechless!

ronshar · 13/10/2009 11:08

We have a friend whos DD had her pierced this year. I have to say I was outraged. I thought it was against the law under 16?

Why would a girl of that age need a piercing? It isnt like she should be wearing crop tops surely?
Maybe I am an old fart as well

AlliterateAndTitillate · 13/10/2009 11:16

Talking as an old goth that had a piercing or two I feel that 13 is far too young! My reaction would have been too.

DD will not be getting her ears pierced for many, many years, let alone her belly button

Leeka · 13/10/2009 11:17

I can't see the problem, it's not permanent, hardly leaves a mark if you choose to remove it, and the teenage years are when such things look best (writing as someone who chose to remove mine in my twenties when the washboard stomach of yore was not something I was quite so proud of!).

Of course 13 year olds wear crop tops, and why shouldn't they if they want to?

Ladyanonymous · 13/10/2009 11:22

OMG....I must also be an old fart and I reckon thats way too young (what if it gets caught?! Ewww....I also don't think 13 year olds should be wearing crop tops...which makes me a doubly old fart

belgo · 13/10/2009 11:24

Far too young. It's one of the more dangerous piercings regarding infection.

ronshar · 13/10/2009 11:25

I do think that girls of that age shouldn't wear clothes that are meant for older girls. Why would a 13 year old need to show off her stomach?
Actually why does anyone need to show off their stomach unless in a bikini?

Nothing worse than flesh hanging out over the top of trousers

ineedalifelaundry · 13/10/2009 11:25

YANBU

And I totally disagree with Leeka - the teenage years are when belly button piercings look WORST. Young girls trying to look like sexualised women. Yuk! Maybe at 17 or 18, but not 13!

starwhoreswonaprize · 13/10/2009 11:26

Yes let's let all young teens make adult choices and dress like adults and then let's hope they all get pregnant.....oops appears the UK is doing that already.

VineGruesomeTits · 13/10/2009 11:31

I thought you had to be 16 to get that done

What is the mother like? 13 is too young

TrillianSlasher · 13/10/2009 11:41

Too young IMO, but I can't think of an actual good reason why. I had mine done at 16 or 17 (can't remember).

Not particularly sexual though, it's just a sparkly thing. Are belly buttons sexy?

girlywhirly · 13/10/2009 11:43

Lets hope she is scrupulous in her care and cleansing of the piercing, navel ones get infected really easily, and children are usually really bad about this sort of thing.

Yes I agree it's too young for this type of piercing. YANBU.

lalin · 13/10/2009 11:44

Way too young. I've told my 13yrDD that she can have here ears pierced when she is 25.13 is also way too young for crop tops.
It is horrible how many children are already dressing in a sexualised way, when they should be having fun with their friends and being carefree. What is that all about?

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/10/2009 12:36

Oh Leeka you runied it, I was going for 100% YANBU

Glad it's not just me then. I absolutely hate all types of piercings including ears, so thought perhaps I was biased.

And no I don't want my dd to waltz around wearing bloody crop tops either.

I was amazed, as the mother seems very sensible and strict up to now. DD's friend seems to have grown up a lot in the last 3 months, though, is wearing heavy eye make up etc and wearing older clothes.

Knickers0nMaHead · 13/10/2009 12:39

From your point, yanbu

but from the dd's point, yabu, but then I had had my tongue pierced twice by the time I was 14

gorionine · 13/10/2009 12:39

Ronshar, I would go even further and ask why would anyone, regrdless of age would want to show their belly button to complete strangers!

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/10/2009 12:43

omg

BrieVanDerKamp · 13/10/2009 12:52

YANBU it is far too young, my 13 y dd ask me if she could get hers done the other day, because her friend was. I said no. I then found out that the friend was having it done at a tattoo place!!! I though it was illegal for under 18's to even be on the premises!!

I phoned the place in question and simply asked the ages for piercing and was told that actually there is no age in the UK for piercings, which I had no idea about.

DD then asked me if she could atleast go along with friend to see her have it done, again I answered no, a tattoo place is not a place I would want my dd hanging out.

And BTW, I have a couple of small tattoo's, so I'm not a prude or old fart, there's just somethings people shouldn't be allowed to do until they're an adult. I told her, her body belongs to me until she's 18, then she can do what she wants with it!!

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/10/2009 12:59

Brie - that is almost word for word what I have said to dd. When she is 18 she can do what she likes - until then, my word is law .

I don't understand why anyone would wear crop tops either. Even in my flat stomached days I wouldn't have shown by stomach off for some reason.

mumof2rugrats · 13/10/2009 13:07

i was 14 when i had mine done the only reason was because my older sister (15yr)wasnt aloud to have it done unless i had it done i think but i wont be letting my dds get it done till there 16 my dd1 has been asking to get her ears done for 2 yrs and iv always said when your 7 and she 6 now and om trying to scare her telling her its going to hurt but she dont care

PuffFluffLovesApplePearSnapps · 13/10/2009 13:32
