Picked DD up from a friend's house last night. Asked friend if she would like to go swimming at the weekend. Friend said no, I had my belly button pierced on Saturday and don't think it is a good idea to go swimming just yet (lifted up top to show me belly button bar).

I think my jaw just dropped. That is too young isn't it? I am not just an old fart am I?

Btw, as soon as dd got in the car I said 'don't even ask'

YANBU - 13 is much too young. I think 18 would be okay, but anything younger - no way!

WeeHalfPint · 13/10/2009 13:40

I must be an old fart too :D 13 is way way too young.

Sourdough · 13/10/2009 13:43

No, YANBU.

Tis a slippery slope.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/10/2009 13:49

Glad we're all a bunch of old farts then

wow...just realised I was 13 when I got mine done. My mum had to sign a permission letter to allow me to have it done. My mum is a bit of a prude as well! She cried when she discovered I had bought J17 magazine aged 15! I haven't had a piercing in it for ages, I think it is something thats more for younger girls, rather than older, I don't think I would have been so keen aged 17/18.

So... I think YABU. I don't see the harm in it, t's not permanent like a tattoo. The hole closes if you don't have a peircing in it.

IWantAChickAndADuck · 13/10/2009 13:54

sourdough, slippery slope to what?

Sourdough · 13/10/2009 13:57

Starts with belly button ring, followed by wanting to show it off, followed by enjoying the attention, and so on.

As the mother of a teenage girl with lots of friends (and having been a teenage girl just like that) I know the cycle. Doesn't mean it will happen, but it often does.

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 13/10/2009 14:01

The hole doesn't always close, I had mine done at 15/16, took it out when I was pregnant with DS1 (he is 7yo) the hole is still there, you can see straight through it.

YANBU.

Leeka · 13/10/2009 14:21

But why is a sparkly jewel through your belly button that most people won't see, except at the occasional times when you where a crop top or bikini, 'sexualising youngsters'? Of all the things they could possibly want to do, this is really not that bad is it?

Most of my friends at that age (nice middle class well brought up girls too!) had nose piercings, several ears pierced, 'interestingly' dyed hair, etc - at least this is not permanent and hidden if you want it to be.

Thankfully fashion has changed somewhat from the early nineties rock/hippy trends that we followed!

Squishabelle · 13/10/2009 14:26

Dd had it done at 13. Fast forward a few years - got to hate it, removed it and is now left with a horrid hole.

Sourdough · 13/10/2009 14:28

A friend of mine, when in his early twenties, confessed that a belly button ring was as sexy as it gets. He described the 'nibbling it on your way down' in exceptional detail. A stud through the tongue is to provide an unrivalled blow job, a sparkly jewel just above your nethers is like the star of Bethlehem.

mummyflood · 13/10/2009 15:07

Glad to be joining the old farts club then!

A friend of mine allowed her DD to have hers done in the summer hols after she turned 13, and it was actually an agreement with another mother that both girls would have it done at the same time!! I remember her telling me that she had said to this other Mother 'don't let me down by letting x have it done sooner, will you?' Said friend seems to revel in her kids doing/getting things sooner than their peers, always has done. Methinks she is reliving her own youth sometimes, but that is another thread.

Leeka · 13/10/2009 15:16

Sourdough - I don't remember mine ever being nibbled, and not sure I'd have liked it if it had been!

boodleboot · 13/10/2009 15:24

no you are not being unreasonable. my DDS mum gave her written permission to have it done at 12 and i was like

it totally f@cked our holiday as it meant that she wouldn't go in the sea or go to the swimming pool with my DC's and i had to clean it constantly as it was getting infected and her mum had sent her away without the care kit.....

i HATE belly piercings on girls under 16....

boodleboot · 13/10/2009 15:24

my DSD not my DDS

Asana · 13/10/2009 15:40

LMAO @ "Star of Bethlehem"

CheerfulYank · 13/10/2009 15:54

I'm only in my 20's so I don't think I qualify as an "old fart" and no I do NOT think YAU. The thing about it for me is, at age 13, who's going to see it? A bikini I guess, but no 13 year old of mine is going out in a crop top.

So I get the picture of a tarty little girl being all, "Ooh, I got my belly pierced, wanna see it," giggle giggle....uck.

IWantAChickAndADuck · 13/10/2009 16:02

errr... I was no tarty little girl

Sourdough... whats a blow job?

Wanderingsheep · 13/10/2009 16:14

Hmm... well, I was going to say YANBU and then be at the thought of someone letting their daughter get their belly button pierced at 13, then I thought about my teenage years and remembered that quite a few of my friends had theirs pierced when we were about 14!

At that time I didn't think it was too young and everyone wore cropped tops, but there is no way I will let my DD when she is that age!

lalin · 13/10/2009 20:02

Why would any mum want their daughter's belly to be ogled by anyone?
Pierced or not, it is horrible to think some boy/dirty old man is even looking at my little girl.?
13 is still a child, and girls that age need the opportunity and safety to grow up before even thinking of boys.
Boys aged 13 are playing football, rugby, Xboxes, so how come it is acceptable for girls that age to be primping with make-up, piercings, make up etc.
I don't care about being an old fart,
I do care that little girls are being encouraged via the porn industry to tart themselves up for the titillation of the male species.

SixtyFootDoll · 13/10/2009 20:05

I hate belly button piercings anyway, so common.
Look awful and even worse on a 13 yr old.

mumeeee · 13/10/2009 22:29

YANBU. 13 is way too young.

ErikaMaye · 13/10/2009 22:41

I got mine done at 15 - for me, not for anyone else. It was a confidence booster, and it didn't matter that I wasn't showing it off to anyone, having it there made me feel good.

Think really it depends on the individual, and their ciramstances, and why they wanted it done.

FWIW I had my ears perieced at 7.
