Baby name choice

OK, I think I AM being unreasonable, so I just need a poll of how unreasonable this is.

My friend has named her baby a name (IMHO) which is awful. Truly awful.

I cannot bring myself to call this child by the name given. I have, however, realised that the initials give quite a nice name.

SO, I've taken to calling the child by it's initials.

I know it's unreasonable, but is it really bad to do this? I really do hate the name. I did balk when I was told, as did both sets of GPs...

I think I can get away with it, cos it's just using the child's initials, right?

I have tried to talk to the mum about the name, but she's not budging.

Her baby, her choice of name, so you should use the baby's name however awful it may be.

Can't really comment without knowing the name.
But I will say, I know some people with names I don't particularly like, young and old, but I do still use their name.

i actually think the only correct resposne to someobne telling you their child's name is "that's lovely"

Do they call her anything for short? Like Evie or Effie, or is it the full name every time? I would find it hard to call a small baby that, purely because it's such an old lady sounding, severe name.

Its fine to not like a name, we all have opinions and we call our children names we like, but you have no right to refuse to call your friends baby by its given name.

I did try Mia, but it didn't go down too well.

It does just seem quite strict for a newborn.

YABU - it's not that bad, not offensive to anyone, it's their choice.

I don't know if YABU or not... but you wouldn't be alone in commenting. A girl I know (by way of oh) had a baby in March whom she named "Tyler" - her friends actually pulled her to one side and said "What were you thinking?" and she said she'd liked it under the influence of painkillers.

On the other hand... sounds like these people put some effort in to Euthansias Violent.

I think that's going to get naturally shortened isn't it?

YANBU for not liking the name. Each to their own and all that,

BUT

YABU for refusing to use the name they have given her. As I said, I would find it hard to use it too, but it is what they've chosen and you really can't force your nickname ideas on other people's babies.

Euphemia Millais was known as Effie.

i dont think thats a bad name, there are worse (my step-aunt for example is called Regina) and in time it will get shortened
