Baby name choice

Harimosbroomstick · 06/10/2009 16:41

OK, I think I AM being unreasonable, so I just need a poll of how unreasonable this is.

My friend has named her baby a name (IMHO) which is awful. Truly awful.

I cannot bring myself to call this child by the name given. I have, however, realised that the initials give quite a nice name.

SO, I've taken to calling the child by it's initials.

I know it's unreasonable, but is it really bad to do this? I really do hate the name. I did balk when I was told, as did both sets of GPs...

I think I can get away with it, cos it's just using the child's initials, right?

I have tried to talk to the mum about the name, but she's not budging.

AIBU?

It's awful. But what can you do?

Diarmuid Gavin's daughter is named "eppie" which is even worse if that helps at all. Reminds me of Eppie pen for analphalactic shock.

Firawla · 06/10/2009 17:24

you will just have to call the name, and over time maybe they will start using shorter forms anyway or you will get used to it. she may grow into the name and suit it
its not thatt bad

DuelingFANGo · 06/10/2009 17:28

YABVU indeed.

pranma · 06/10/2009 17:37

How about Effie?Quite a nice abbreviation and Violette is sweet

browntrout · 06/10/2009 17:58

I think it's quite a nice name actually. I mean, certainly nothing to be sticking in your throat so that you can't say it. I was expecting a beyonce/chardonnay sort of name to be honest.

Avendesora · 06/10/2009 17:59

Effie is lovely, and your being mean If your tastes are so different then what does she think of your name choices?

starwhores · 06/10/2009 18:03

Violet is such a lovely name.

Hulababy · 06/10/2009 18:06

As you already know, YABU.

It'll grow on you and in a year's time you'll have forgotten about your fuss with it.

Very unreasonable to discuss it negatively with mum though.

asdx2 · 06/10/2009 19:23

My friend called her ds Harley, I hate it she knows I hate it even without my saying anything because she knows I hate these modern names.
Tend to call him babe when referring to him to her and handsome when talking to him. Thinking up a suitably acceptable alternative for when he's a toddler but have to say I don't think I've offended her yet.
I would say YANBU to give her a pet name but YABU if you discuss why with babe's mother.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/10/2009 19:30

It's a terrible name IMO, but it was very rude to tell your friend you don't like it (just bitch about it behind her back, instead, like a normal person )

Harimosbroomstick · 06/10/2009 19:39

OK, guys...

I take all the comments on board and am happy to accept that I am being V unreasonable.

I will have a stern talk to myself and get over it.

thanks,

I don't care if I call my baby pigswollopstinkyarse snotrag, everyone will call it whatever name I give it or sod off.

Gawd. Not just Unreasonable

UnUnUnUnUnUnUnUnUnreasonable.

Who on earth do you think you are? You're probably nice really, but bad judgement. EV is lovely though so she might quite like it. But if she doesn't, you need to back down.

Euphemia is AWFUL but her baby, her choice and you best start practising saying it without grimacing!

If I was your friend I would be very annoyed at your trying to apply nn all the time.

It's Euphemia, get on with it

slowreadingprogress · 06/10/2009 19:55

'tried to talk to' your friend about it and 'she's not budging'???? How incredibly arrogant of you! My goodness if anyone had done that with me about my son's name I really would have wanted to punch 'em on the nose!!!

Harimosbroomstick · 06/10/2009 20:17

Go ahead... Slowreadingprogress. I have a large nose..

I take all the comments on board, but I still maintain that such a name is Effing awful. (nickname or not!)

SHe' askedme what I think of it nd I've tried to be nice, but I can't bring myself to say I like it.

OP posts:
LifeOfKate · 06/10/2009 20:35

Hehe, my thoughts are that she was going to use a nn, but you've probably got her back up by insisting on a nn, so she's decided to insist that it must be the full name to piss you off I certainly would if someone told me they hated my new child's name and tried to persuade me to change it! Her agreeing to let you use a nn is probably, to her, as good as agreeing with you that it's an awful name.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/10/2009 20:38

Euphemia = Euphonium= large wind instrument = Unfortunate

PurpleEgluggedblood · 06/10/2009 20:39

YABU. I actually like it!

Glad you've chosen to go along with it.
My ex PILs clearly didn't like my dds chosen name and always called her something else.
Pissed me off something rotten
Also pissed dd off as she got older.
It's disrespectful and dismissive of the child.

Of course an affectionate nickname that's just yours for her is something different....

PlonkerCandleInAPumpkin · 06/10/2009 21:19

YABU, of course, but you do know that

Dh worked with a guy who had a son with a perfectly normal, totally reasonable name which, for reasons unknown my dh can't stand.
He called the little boy 'mate' for the whole time he worked with his dad (about 3yrs!!!).

My dh shuddered every time the little boys name was said ...luckily only I ever seemed to notice ...

Pyrocanthus · 06/10/2009 21:20

Latrine. I like it!

LynetteScavo · 06/10/2009 21:28

YABU, and rude.

I don't like the name Euphemia..but wouldn't be so rude as not to use it.
