To want to broadcast the video of the birth at my dd's christening?

We tried to have a child for a long time and so when I became pregnant I was thrilled. My husband and I did a kind of video diary charting the pregnancy as it went along and obviously he videoed the birth too, which was a wonderful experience that my husband participated in.

We are to hold my daughter's christening in a few weeks and during the ceremony I'd like the video to be screened as a celebration of all we went through and experienced to get to that day.

But my husband's mother heard about our plans and now his family are threatening to boycott the ceremony, calling me a "freak" and saying it would be distasteful. How can a birth be distasteful?

AnnVan · 05/10/2009 14:53

hehe can I see a picture of the toilet roll holder?? Pretty please

Rhubarb · 05/10/2009 14:54

Oh yes most definitely Bucharest, haven't you? I think everyone should have a birth video that is screened on special occasions, such as dinner parties for the boss.

Iklboo · 05/10/2009 14:57

Rhubs - this is the best larf I've had in aaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss

Rollmops · 05/10/2009 15:06

To the OP - you must be mad.

Bucharest · 05/10/2009 15:20

Rhubarb, if I had, it would feature the gynaecologist sat between my legs rather than my burgeoning fanjo, as even in the throes of childbirth I just kept thinking "I can't believe that the man sat with his hands in my vagina looks like David Dickinson the antiques man, complete with bouffant hair and orange skin".

Stayingsunnygirl · 05/10/2009 15:27

Ohhh buggerlumps - why can't I spot these threads???! [smacks forehead emoticon]

freename · 05/10/2009 15:27

OP I thought having to see a slideshow of a child changing throughout the course of his first year was vomit inducing enough. Perleease.

The journey was very special to you and should remain (very) private. Seriously no one wants to sit through all that schmultzy/gory stuff.
You'll kill the atmosphere for sure.

Pikelit · 05/10/2009 15:38

You'll have to excuse my ignorance...

...I've only caught a snatch of the action.

Iklboo · 05/10/2009 15:39

snatch

ConFuschias · 05/10/2009 15:42

Well done Rhubs

preciouslillywhite · 05/10/2009 15:42

Long before I was lumbered blessed with little ones my friend insisted on showing me lots of alarming pictures of her home birth...

the one that stuck in my mind was of her placenta lying on a copy of that day's Guardian, with the quick crossword clearly visible and half done

...couldn't help but wonder whether they did the crossword before, during...or after

flimflammum · 05/10/2009 15:43

Yes! 'YABU Nobody wants to see your vagina' has to be quote of the day, please. That has made me laugh more than anything.

And rhubarb, punch on the nose cos I fell for it.

Conundrumish · 05/10/2009 15:52

Undercova - yes I was worried about the feathery bits and dangly-bits too. I think if I had been born with both maybe I'd be making a video for public showing too

Monsterspam · 05/10/2009 16:23

Will the sound be muffled?

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 05/10/2009 17:11

I think this is a MARVELLOUS idea it makes all the christenings I have been to look boring. IF you have cupcakes as well can I come?

pointydoug · 05/10/2009 17:22

crumbs, who ya tryin ta kid?

nussy · 05/10/2009 17:22

well, my dh says post on here and we'll all vote lol! Personally, i think its a nice idea, just be tasteful with it - you dont want the sentiment of the birth and the christening to be overshadowed by the audience gobsmacked by graphic images - as those images will be remembered rather then the service!

TotalChaos · 05/10/2009 17:34

roflmao, well done Rhubarb!

Greatfun · 05/10/2009 18:05

Go ahead. Thats a great idea. Completely normal

piscesmoon · 05/10/2009 18:42

I haven't read it all but it sounds dire! I hope that you aren't going to bring it out for DCs 18th birthday!

bigpantywoman · 05/10/2009 18:44

Well, I also have a lovely video montage of stills from my DD's fab waterbirth - I love it and look at often, and have even privately showed it to my Mum. BUT I would never show it to an assembled throng of family and friends! I'd keep it private if I were you. (I don't think you're a freak, I love birth videos, I just think it's not necessarily something other people will want to see).

pagwatch · 05/10/2009 18:45

great thread

bigpantywoman · 05/10/2009 18:46

Doh, just read the rest of the thread properly and realised this is a wind up - that'll teach me lol
