To want to broadcast the video of the birth at my dd's christening?

We tried to have a child for a long time and so when I became pregnant I was thrilled. My husband and I did a kind of video diary charting the pregnancy as it went along and obviously he videoed the birth too, which was a wonderful experience that my husband participated in.

We are to hold my daughter's christening in a few weeks and during the ceremony I'd like the video to be screened as a celebration of all we went through and experienced to get to that day.

But my husband's mother heard about our plans and now his family are threatening to boycott the ceremony, calling me a "freak" and saying it would be distasteful. How can a birth be distasteful?

a teddy bear made out of a PLACENTA did i see that correctly. OMG i really have seen it all now!!

Rhubarb · 06/10/2009 11:29

Oh cool! This has to be my most popular thread ever!

I'm actually thinking of giving copies of the birth video as Christmas presents, how lovely would that be? And that placenta teddy bear is gorgeous! You could stash it away and present to your child on their 18th in front of all their friends couldn't you?

Oh my evil mind is thinking all kinds of things now, I really must stop!

Miggsie · 06/10/2009 11:33

I'm afraid a birth video is one of thiose things, that although may be incredibly meaningful and precious to the parents completely turns off everyone else.

Not everyone is as excited about your child as you are.

Ant chance of a video of the conception? Might as well do the set, eh?

pigletmania · 06/10/2009 12:01

Well if you really must, but it should have no fanjo on display, no boobs and absolutely no sound. You sound like one of those people who talk the ears off people about your darling offspring when in fact they might be bored to tears. Judging by the comments on here you might gauge how this is going to be recieved, mabey one of your guests is a Mumsnetter and might post on the AIBU about it

As for having no doors in your home . what about the loo . what if you want to have a poo without all an sundry seeing you. or you have guests who do not want to have their bodily functions on public display . What if you have guests and they dont want to be on display whilst they are asleep, i do hope you have doors on the guest bedroom or bathroom if you dont my god you are mad

cruelladepoppins · 06/10/2009 12:01

Well, I think even wedding videos are incredibly self-indulgent, so you prob know what my answer would be ...

pigletmania · 06/10/2009 12:02

oh no please do not show this video to yoru dd on her 18th and 21st birthday party . in private ok but not infront of her bf and friends

SmallScrewCap · 06/10/2009 12:18

I wouldn't be offended by a birth video at a christening, but I would be monumentally bored.

At the last christening I went to, a laptop was running next to the coffees with a slideshow of the baby's birth and early days. This baby had been in SCBU for 3 months, so was really quite a story and a lot of people stopped to watch and chat about it. I liked the way they left it as an option for people to look at, though.

Rhubarb · 06/10/2009 12:20

Well I'm going to show the birth video and I'm going to give them as Christmas presents and my dd will have a public showing on her birthdays too and you can't stop me so there!

AND I'm having a plaster cast of my breasts made into towel rings so they'll go with my dh's Big Ben toilet roll holder.

I might even get one done of my feathery bits to make into a letter holder.

AND I may give them out to teachers as end of term presents!

SmallScrewCap · 06/10/2009 12:24

Rhubarb I think you should also have gift bags made up in the shape of your fanjo.

Bessie123 · 06/10/2009 12:25

Actually, I think you should project the video on a loop onto the side of your house for the next 20 years.

SmallScrewCap · 06/10/2009 12:26

LOL @Bessie123! Can you imagine driving past that on your way to work every morning?

Shellseeker · 06/10/2009 12:29

It's such a pity that you can't have an inbuilt screen like the teletubbies so you could just have the video playing wherever you go!

HKT · 06/10/2009 12:29

@ placenta teddy bear!
Why, why, why?
Would the child keep it as a reminder?

LucyMo · 06/10/2009 12:30

Well this is spooky. I wrote a radio sketch last year that was about someone showing their birth video at a Christening. For a horrible moment I thought my weird comedy brain had been out-weirded by real life. Thank god this is just a wind-up and I don't have to go and get a proper job...

0Clair0 · 06/10/2009 12:33

Yes you are being unreasonable. If I had seen what giving birth was REALLY like before I would never have had DD. You'll give any children present nightmares, quite possibly some of the adults too. And If I was present I don't think I'd ever be able to look you in the eye again. No way would I want everyone see my fandango, let alone my father in law! Please don't do it.

Acanthus · 06/10/2009 12:40

end of term presents - positively inspired, I'd say

Feierabend · 06/10/2009 20:12

ROFL at pigletmania... why does no-one read the thread properly?

I like the placenta teddy bear

Guimauve · 06/10/2009 20:40

That is because you are pished, Feier!
