He's currently ironing in the kitchen and muttering to himself and wants the MN consensus on this.

well I am a working Mum and I seem to do the majority of housework!!! If he hates it that much get local cleaners to do them for £1 a pop....win win

Sassybeast · 21/09/2009 11:01

I have to do spiders cos DH is scared

MmeLindt · 21/09/2009 11:12

Getorfmyland
If we were to divvy up jobs accordign to who is better at them, then our list woudl be:

DH: dusting, hoovering, bathrooms, garden, keeping kitchen clean

ME: ironing, faffing about decorating the house, cooking

Although saying that, he is more thorough when cleaning but it takes him aaaaaaaaaaaaaages

happywomble · 21/09/2009 11:24

I am SAHM. DH irons his shirts. Nothing else is ironed on a regular basis. Only iron your DH's shirts if you enjoy ironing or are a saint!

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/09/2009 11:28

MMelindt - yes, DP is far better at cleaning, however he takes most of an ice age to clean the kitchen, so half the time I do it out of sheer impatience!

Tbh (fingers crossed) we never have arguments about domestic tasks, we just all muck in and get on with it.

scaryteacher · 21/09/2009 11:29

I only married my dh on the understanding that I would not have to iron his uniform shirts for him, or others if he wasn't required to wear uniform for a posting.

23 years on, he still irons them.

I do the ironing. Dh does the bills. You just have to work out what's best for you as a family, there's nothing sexist about doing the ironing if that's the most practical solution for your family.

MMeLindt - If we divided up the jobs according to who is the better at doing them, I would spend my whole time on mumsnet.

Actually, that's what I do anyway.

colabottlefizzy · 21/09/2009 11:45

I can't see how people don't iron anything? what about jeans and stuff?
DH irons his uniform because that has to be a done a certain way and I normally iron his other clothes. I have to admit I do go on strike every now and then if I find that he has been looking for a certain top and ends up crumpling all the ironing I have done for him. Now that pisses me off!

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 21/09/2009 11:49

Nice post bedlambeast

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/09/2009 12:00

Jeans need ironing? Who knew?

bran · 21/09/2009 12:24

Surely nobody irons jeans. The whole point of jeans is that they are not in any way smart, they are robust workwear and supposed to be scruffy.

Even if I didn't hate ironing I'm not the type to wear crispy cotton or linen. I'm very hot and press wrinkles into anything I wear with the heat of my skin, even the most beautfully ironed shirt looked like a rag by the time I'd done the tube journey to work.

The thing is, I don't like being a SAHM, I like playing with the kids but I hate all the domestic drudgery. I liked my job. DH would completely hate being a SAHD and lives for his job. In my view I have given up something that I liked for something that I don't particularly like for at least the next 5 years or so in order that DH and I could have a second child without disrupting his lifestyle too much. (To be fair, he has made some concessions, he tries to avoid taking contracts abroad and makes a big effort to come home before bedtime a couple of times a week.) Being told that I should skivvy for him as well as the kids would tip me over the edge, and he knows better than to suggest it.

colabottlefizzy · 21/09/2009 12:28

I always iron jeans I just hate the feel of them and the look of the creases when I put them on. Personally I don't think its only 'smart' stuff that should get ironed. I hate creases with a passion.

MoonTheLoon · 21/09/2009 12:30

I iron jeans.

I work FT in the same job as DH and still I do 80% of the housework and child realated stuff. I do all the ironing except DHs because they are huge and also becasue I feel I have done enough with mine, 2 DSs and all household stuff like duvets etc. He does the outside stuff (even thought his does not equate to anywhere near the number of hours I put in).

However, if I was a SAHM I think I would do his ironing. As someone pointed out earlier, if I didn't have to go to work and could enjoy seeing my DCs grow up while he earned the income, I think it would be worth it.

alypaly · 21/09/2009 12:32

just because you are a SAHM mum doesnt render him incapable does it?

alypaly · 21/09/2009 12:33

are you his mum or his wife.

Ripeberry · 21/09/2009 12:35

I don't iron, but DH shirt's get done, he does offer to help but he does not do it right and I end up doing them again

YeahBut · 21/09/2009 12:37

I'm a lazy SAHM who sits on the sofa eating chocolate and drinking coffee all day whilst using DH's hard earned cash to pay someone else to do the ironing...

Ripeberry · 21/09/2009 12:38

My 'iron' is the tumble dryer, if you take things out when they are warm and smooth them down then they are ironed already!
I think they should do domestic steam cupboards, same a whole lot of time

Ripeberry · 21/09/2009 12:39

Yeah but.....classic!

DillyTantay · 21/09/2009 12:40

you are a lazy fecker
iron them for him

OtterInaSkoda · 21/09/2009 12:43

Shirt-ironing is personal care rather than housework, surely? More like shaving, hairwashing or clothes buying than hoovering imo. So I wouldn't be ironing dp's shirts if I was a sahm.

choochoo73 · 21/09/2009 12:44

If I didn't find ironing such a hateful task, involving the cord getting all tangled up, steam, bits of chalky white stuff just spewing onto clothes, inexplicable leaks from the iron (it happens with any i have ever bloody used), I may change my views. My ironing is pretty duff, not likely to get better, so shirts are better left to the bloke who's going to wearing them. Collars and sleeves? That panel just below the neck? Too tricky! Just a big old faff!

sweetkitty · 21/09/2009 12:46

I'm a SAHM DP irons his own shirts, I iron for myself and three little people, he can do his own.

allaboutme · 21/09/2009 12:56

I'm a SAHM and I dont iron.
I dont iron any of my clothes or the DCs and DH irons his own work shirts.

I have 2 toddlers though, so no time to do things like that as they arent at school during the day.
