to have got mad with the checkout woman in Tescos?

She insisted I show ID as I had a bottle of wine in amongst my shopping. The girl serving was underage so had to shout 'alcohol' to the woman on the next checkout who challenged my age.

I am 31 and I had my 2 kids and DH with me. I shop there twice a week and have never been ID'd! I don't carry ID, why should I have to?

I got really defensive about it which probably made me look really silly. I feel quite red faced about it now. I ranted at her in front of queuing customers about how old I was and how I don't expect to be asked for ID and she said I looked younger than 25! My husband said I should be flattered but I just saw red at the bureacracy of it all!

In the end she let us buy it because she said my husband looked older; he's the same age as me! Just feel really embarrassed now for kicking off - I'm not normally like that, not in public anyway! Must be nearing that time of the month or something!

She could lose her job and go to court for selling alcohol to underage people - why the fuck should she risk that for your bottle of whine?

Wihout even reading your post, I would say that it is always unreasonable to get shirty with a checkout girl.

Reading your post, I would be flattered to be ID'd at 31. I think the oldest I got to was about 28.

These are the kinds of things you should just go along with. Don't let it get to you.

the policy is lunacy, but that doesn't make it the fault of the checkout person or give you a right to give them a hard time.

what kind of id do they require?

I am rather sad that at 34 I never get IDed for alcohol buying. Must look my age I think

Look I know I was unreasonable I don't even know why I posted here, just feel stupid for overreacting and for being hoity with the checkout woman who was only doing her job. Oh dear. I need to learn to keep my mouth shut and smile.

The girl had surely been told she must ask everyone. These stories are all over the press at the moment.

I agree it's bloody annoying and to me, another sign of the way common sense is being removed from our society in favour of targets and tick boxes. Write to the CEO about it, the shop manager, the head of customer services, but getting cross with a young girl who is following rules that she can't change is not fair.

why should she risk losing her job because you have a chip on your shoulder and as for ranting at her well how nasty.

I work on checkouts and have lovely customers such as yourself. Do you realize how severe the penalties are if you get it wrong. You get arrested, fined and you lose your job

I bet you really made her day

YABU - I work in a supermarket, it is a policy that they have to have which the poor girl on the checkout has to enforce or risk losing her job.

If you wanted to rant you should address your problems to a manager. People like you are the reason why people like me hate our jobs so much.

It was more the fact that she hadn't really looked at us before she told the girl serving us to ask us for ID, so its not as if she had a good look at me first and then thought I looked too young. I felt that she was asking for the sake of it. It wasn't until I challenged her about it that she said I looked younger than 25.

It wasn't the young girl who served us that I challenged, I didn't say anything to her, it was the woman on the next checkout and I won't be complaining to anyone, I know its not her fault. I just don't expect to have to carry ID at my age or to be questioned when I'm doing my shopping I just want to pay and go. Still can't believe she honestly thought I look that young! I didn't really rant I challenged her - I didn't shout at her.

It's getting to the stage that everyone over 18 but under 35 will have to carry photo ID cards to buy alcohol. My DD who is 15 has been refused the right to buy a 15 film and also a newspaper because it had a 15 film free.

It's compulsory ID through the back door.

I hate it.

Also she was quite within her rights to refuse to sell it to your husband as he would be giving it to you.

All the posters saying YABU maybe haven't been ID'd because it's embarrassing and I think more people should kick up a fuss over it.

I did a post when it happened to my DD, I was with her and tried to vouch for her age but wasn't believed.

lol dp never gets served alcohol in tesco, he always needs ID he's 35!
I on the other hand haven't been asked for ID since I was about 15

I'm 37 and was asked for ID in Sainsburys last week.

I was hugely flattered.

I go in there all the time now.
