DS1 started secondary yesterday. He wants me to let him come home alone tomorrow.....I am scared shitless (putting it bluntly) he has only ever travelled alone once before!

Mornings are sorted....one of the teachers travels on the same bus and she has said she will watch out for him in the mornings.

I want him to stay my babyyyyyyyyyyy

Glad he's home safe, TLES! You go shopping and I'll walk the dog.

See you later!

He probably turned his phone of and 'forgot' to turn it back on to stop his Mum ringing him while his mates were around.

He just wants to look cool in front of his mates who have been ragging him about his Mum bringing him to school.

I know it was a different era and all but my mother let me travel on the bus to school unaccompanied from age 6. (I do look back and wonder whether her determination to raise us as independant was a little barmy)

Wahhhhh!! I have aborted the dog walk - well, I've come home and ds2 has taken the dog on for the rest of her walk - because I fell over in a muddy puddle!

It was very elegant though - 5.9 for technical merit and 5.8 for artistic impression (I lost 0.2 of a mark for laughing when my arse landed in the mud)!

And now I am going to go and have a shower and put my muddy clothes to the wash.

I wouldn't worry about being a bit mad, thesun - I am too! And worrying is one of my greatest skills as well - are you sure we are not the same person?

I had to read this twice. Secondary school? Most kids I know of DD's age were walking to primary school alone from about age 10. Going to secondary school slone was therefore not a big deal.

What is a big deal is the fear you can feel as a parent and I do relate to that. DD is 17 and I still like to know she's home before I can go to sleep at night. You will have to let him go and doing the return journey is a good start.

Me too I had to read this twice. And even then I felt like calling on seeker to hold my hand because this bus ride seemed to take me into strange unchartered country.

Still, all the more credit to the posters on this thread who have managed to overcome their fears and helped their dcs take on more step on towards independence.

The reason I panic is because i live in an unsavoury part of south london....... a few years ago a 10 yr old boy was stabbed to death here...that should be a clue.

He went to and from school alone so I think I can be a tad more relaxed tomorrow lol....or maybe not!

I saw the thread and thought "God, I went to secondary school on the bus all by myself - even on the first day!"

Then I realised that that was 30 years ago!!!! Eeek - how did that happen, so my opinion is no longer relevant . Did they even have cars then?

I felt bad enough dropping mine through the school gate this morning with her back pack. She was quite happy though. Why do they have to grow up?

We live opposite my ds1's secondary school so I didn't have to worry about the journey on Monday.

Howver he did switch the electric grill on at 8am and left it on all day until 5pm when I came home, so there is always something to worry about!
