to feel a bit hurt by my friend?

background - friend has children the same age as mine and they go to the same school. We've been friends for about a year and share other friends, have been out together and helped each other out etc

she has always been one of the nicest people I know, she is generous and kind and would do anything for anyone

My ds2 has a ridiculous haircut at the moment his fringe is cut straight across about 2 inches above his eyebrows and his hair slopes down to shoulder length at the back

he looks like a coconut

the reason for it is that he nicked my scissors and hacked his fringe nearly half-way across at that stupidly short length, and when I tried to tidy it up he wailed that I wasn't allowed to cut the back short because he wants a ponytail like Daddy

so I did the best I could with it and it looks tidy, even though it's a daft haircut

anyway lovely friend who I thought really liked me apparently said to a mutual friend the other morning at school

"Have you SEEN XX's hair, what on earth have they done to him" and was laughing and taking the piss

I know it's silly but I feel really hurt and also I feel as though I have to tell everyone we know why he has that haircut

I made dh mention it to his teacher this morning (two boys and two adults, so we take one each into school for the 10 minutes of 'early work', I had ds1 this morning)

AIBU to feel that my trust has been shaken? I would never have expected this friend to take the piss behind my back like that. Now I feel rather sad and wary of all the other people I thought liked me

What the hell is Huff Puff? Is it real huffing and puffing or a new technique to help children settling in at school?

Araminta, my fav place is The Dinasaur Cafe', they make this fantastic mixed salad, and the owner is lovely and used to snatch my dc in the kitchen when they were babies... I feel all teary now.
I used to love Roger's tea room, but it changed ownership ages ago.
I like 36, Fennel and Greeny took me there.

jemart · 08/09/2009 20:03

Of course I wouldn't pin him down and hack his hair off! We would have a nice long talk about how people will often judge you based on your appearance.
Nobody likes to be mocked. He may be the one deciding he likes his unusual hair cut now but ten years on he will be blaming it on his mother.

francagoestohollywood · 08/09/2009 20:04

Sorry re the cooker, it's a pain.

francagoestohollywood · 08/09/2009 20:06

But he is only little Jemart, chances are that he'll never remember this haircut.
I really find it sad that children as little as Greeny's ds should feel worried to be mocked for their hairstyle.

GreensleevesFlouncedLikeAKnob · 08/09/2009 20:08

No it's bona fide huffing and puffing

especially in my case[large wedge of cake emoticon]

jemart, I see what you are saying, but I really don't want to have any such chat with my 5yo. He has the rest of his life to be hung up and afraid of what others might think of him - I would rather let him enjoy his delightful bold independent streak - if and when it dawns on him that he has to curtail his own image to please others, we will deal with it then

I couldn't sit him down and teach him to conform for fear of having the piss ripped out of him

franca he is still sooooo little toddler in appearance

he looks hilarious in school uniform

he still has little baby legs and a little sticky out tummy

Greeny, exactly that's what i meant in my post.

Is he really? Awwwwwwwwwwww he is so cute, he is. Does he like going to school?

GreensleevesFlouncedLikeAKnob · 08/09/2009 20:16

He professes to be "baaaaaawwwwwd" all the time

but actually he loves it

he tells his teacher that he is "allergic to reading today"

he likes the dinners

he has a great teacher this year, it's the one ds1 had last year and she has a great black sense of humour so they should get on well

how are your two?

francagoestohollywood · 08/09/2009 20:28

lol at allergic to reading... sounds like my ds .

Mine are well, they had a great summer, they are all blond (for italian standards) and incredibly tanned.

Ds went through a difficult time after Christmas adapting to his new school (and competitive school mates), but he seemed totally fine by the end of the term.
Dd is growing a lot, always quite happy with herself.

How's ds1?

GreensleevesFlouncedLikeAKnob · 08/09/2009 21:14

aaaw, your children are so beautiful

I bet your dd is huge now compared to when I saw her last

ds1 is OK, he is happy and confident and cocky which is delightful to see

none of the sadness and fear about school he had in his first year

I think we have his teacher last year to thank for that, she was like a lion tamer and somehow made him really part of the class, so he has good friendships now

his class this year is a job-share between two teachers and so far I don't like either of them [tremble] but he seems happy enough so I am trying not to be hasty

they are both so funny now, they are each developing their own brand of wit and they make me howl with laughter

although I wish ds1 would STOP eating mud/grass/stones/glue

I sopke to his teacher about keeping an eye on it on the first day of term and still he came out today with mud all round his mouth

Glad to hear he is happy at school now, it is so heartbreaking when they aren't, I find. His teacher sounds brilliant, send her over!

I hope to see you all very soon!

chickbean · 08/09/2009 22:22

Hi Greensleeves - thought you might be like to hear that my mum forgot to put the guide on her hair-clippers when cutting my dad's hair, so he had a bald stripe up the back of his head defore she noticed. When I asked what had happened, she said "Sssh! He doesn't know about it." Dread to think what other people thought

AramintaCane · 09/09/2009 09:40

I have quite a lot of friends who go to the Dinosaur cafe and love it. They always say how lovely they are to the kids as well. It seems to be very popular with people who work at the Uni or are doing Phds. I have always inteded to go but it is a bit out of the way.

Greeny my youngest looked like a toddler in reception. She had the sticky out tummy and her little skirt kept falling down under her tummy. Over this summer she has gone all grown up looking

francagoestohollywood · 09/09/2009 12:33

Yes, it is indeed Araminta and quite "international" too... I miss it so much...
I feel all nostalgic now

AramintaCane · 09/09/2009 14:26

Franca you should come back and visit. It is even sunny here today.

francagoestohollywood · 09/09/2009 14:29

My intention is to visit at least once a yr, we came at Easter
I know, September and October are the best months there, imho!

AramintaCane · 09/09/2009 14:40

I love October here I am a pumpkin carving fan.

twirlymum · 09/09/2009 14:46

My ds hates having his hair cut. I couldn't face the trauma of taking him recently so did it myself while he was on the potty.

Dh said he looked like Edmund Blackadder. In the first series.

Chandon · 09/09/2009 15:00

hmmmm I would be wary of the "friend" who told you, and her motives.

I think our friend who made the hair comment intended no malice, a fairly harmless coment!

So YABU, you are too sensitive about it.
