to think that our neighbours decision to replace the fence right now is well really rather cunty

dh has spent last 8 yrs cultivating lovely evergreens and climbing ivy, jasmine and all sorts of other loveliness up the fence

its summer, we're selling our house and garden is a big selling point

they've decided to get the whole fence replaced tomorrow. DH said last week when asked about this that we weren't keen, it would knacker our garden and offered to go and replace the single (!)rotten fence panel. We are quite friendly with these neighbours

Whilst they have every right to change the fence that they are resonsible for, the timing is shoddy and it doesn't show much consideration for us.

Of course YABU. You've been growing stuff all over their fence for years and now want to dictate to them what they can do with it? I'm not surprised they don't feel like accomodating your every whim!

Sounds rather unfair. Why are they replacing the entire fence if it's only one panel that's the problem? What did they say to your DH's offer?

Their fence, they can do what they like when they like.

YABU. You are moving and they will end up with new neighbours that perhaps they don't like. You certainly won't consult with them over who you will sell to will you? Do you care about that?? Suck it up, they have every right to replace it when they want not when it's convenient to your house sale.

I don't this, so the friendly neighbours came round and said, hi there Mr Pixiemason we'd like to pull down the entire fence and replace it, how do you feel about it? Mr PM replied he wasn't keen, it would knacker the garden and the estate agent thinks the garden is the selling point for the house so can they wait a bit.

Then they decided to just do it anyway, tomorrow.

Seems a shame. Maybe their side of the fence looks really shabby? Can you detach the climbers and put them back on the fence after replacement on some clematis netting?

then said nowt of it. Till dh bumped into gardener who's coming back tomorrow to MURDER our byoodiful plants

we've kindly been giving them the beauty of our garden over their drab fence I reckon But hey, they'll be rid of us soon. Maybe another fooking dullard will buy our house and they can be happier then

Cant you ask them again to sgree to replace the one panel, esp if you are happy to cover it?
It is better to replace fences in winter really when most climbers/plants are not in leaf.

Maybe they were waiting for him to do and he never got round to it, so they gave up and went ahead with the full replacement scheme?

WHy dont you dig up the climbers now, pot them and take them with yuo when you move?

Is the current fence low enough to see over? Maybe they want a bit more privacy but didn't want to replace it with a taller one before in case you were offended but have decided to do it now so it's in place before the new owners move in?

If it's really going to mean a hatchet job to the garden and you can't fix it easily so the garden still looks nice.

Just go round and say, look we want to bribe you into not replacing the fence tomorrow. Please don't do it till we've sold the house and you tell me how much beer/wine and I'll have it for you first thing tomorrow.

In terrace houses you own one fence outright so you need to check whether it is your fence or not. YOu own one fence entirely but have no share in the other.

I pity your new neighbours. Perhaps buy detached this time.

is it really going to be so disastrous with the new fence? Maybe it's true they've wanted to do it for years but haven't wanted to offend you/ruin your gardening work, so they're doing it now they know you're leaving

pixie - doesn't matter that your house is terraced, the fence will still belong to one property. If this fence is theirs, then the other side is probably yours.

Thing is, all your plants may look lovely, but they will have been knackering the fence. Sore point round here as we are having to shell out ££££££ to replace a fence that was destroyed by our own plants (ivy and climbers planted by previous owners - looked gorgeous but turns out v. expensive with it).

Ta Pannacotta - agree with replacing it in winter would be better. I'm lovely and polite really. And dealing with stuff on day to day basis that make this a trifle really. Ranting about this in comedic fashion on internet bit of a break really
