to think that our neighbours decision to replace the fence right now is well really rather cunty

dh has spent last 8 yrs cultivating lovely evergreens and climbing ivy, jasmine and all sorts of other loveliness up the fence

its summer, we're selling our house and garden is a big selling point

they've decided to get the whole fence replaced tomorrow. DH said last week when asked about this that we weren't keen, it would knacker our garden and offered to go and replace the single (!)rotten fence panel. We are quite friendly with these neighbours

Whilst they have every right to change the fence that they are resonsible for, the timing is shoddy and it doesn't show much consideration for us.

AIBU to think they are turdy arseholes as a result?

You don't share fences - one side will be yours the other you other neighbours!

Thunderduck · 06/08/2009 19:27

YABVVU.

Tidey · 06/08/2009 19:31

I didn't think this would get so vehement a response. I would think they could have waited til OP moved/ Have all of you had fence issues with your neighbours that have made you get so cross?

Thunderduck · 06/08/2009 19:32

No,we just think the OP is being unreasonable, and the term she used to describe her neighbours probably didn't help.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/08/2009 19:32

No fence issue at all but she only owns one fence so is it this one or the one on the other side, if it is this one then she has every right to get angry, if it is the other then she has no right.

Mintyy · 06/08/2009 19:32

Sympathies Pixie, it all sounds really annoying and frustrating.

Oth, I would suggest "cunty" and "turdy" are perhaps a little harsh for this particular neighbourly misdemeanour.

Tidey · 06/08/2009 19:36

Oh, I see. Yes, on the sweary front, the OP may be a bit unreasonable.

GentleOtter · 06/08/2009 19:40

If you are very careful and take a bit of time then you could put an inner mesh fence (to use as a plant support) then tie the existing plants to this fence.

Perhaps your neighbours wanted to refresh and replace the fence before they had new neighbours so there was minimum fuss?

scottishmummy · 06/08/2009 19:47

think you need to sort your pottymouth first, before addressing your unreasonable concerns about the neighbours

curiositykilled · 06/08/2009 19:47

It depends who owns the fence tbh. It will be in your deeds if you have a shared ownership of the fence in which case they ABU.

If they own the fence then whilst they're being a bit mean - they could have asked you not to grow plants up their fence, YABU because it is their fence.

curiositykilled · 06/08/2009 19:49

madamecastafiore - we share our fence with our neighbours, there is an agreement in our deeds.

crokky · 06/08/2009 19:52

pixiemason - try not to worry regarding the garden being a selling point.

People like differnt things anyway. Personally I absolutely despise ivy and would prefer to see a bare fence. It might make me a cunty dullard .

Oh whilst the fence divides both our gardens it is 'theirs' so completely agree that they can do what they like with it - just that its bad timing.

SWYM GentleOtter about them doing it now to course minimum disruption. Maybe just after we've sold might be good for that ;)

Just feel a tad let down that's all. Hardly creaming obscenities over the fence at them. Just thinking them

Have washed my pottymouth all out now. Will never ever ever swear again and if I have a sweary thought I'll give myself a little smack

YABU. Climbers damage fences. If you like them then repot them or pull them away from fence if the roots will be OK whilst fence replaced before fence done. If I was buying a house I'd rather see a new fence than a broken one anyway. They might wish to have different plants to you anyway.

Woooozle100 · 06/08/2009 21:07

oh you can't see the fence on our side. Its covered with stuff growing up it. Ahhh lovely honeysuckle just coming out. Put some pics on my profile (twas a few months ago that mind. Its really in bloom now!)

OP posts:
paisleyleaf · 06/08/2009 21:07

Buyers might as well see it as it's going to be.

saggyhairyarse · 06/08/2009 21:08

I would be a bit miffed (am in similar position with house on market) but they are staying there so can't put things on hold for you (as cuntish and turdishly arsehole like that is!).

BigGobMum · 06/08/2009 21:09

I am surprised at how many people think that everyone owns either the left OR right fence. As Curiosity says it all depends on what is on the deeds and it dosent matter if the house is terraced, detached or whatever. Our last house we owned the one on the left; at this house they are shared responsibility.

If either of my neighbours move, I shall be replacing the fence before anyone new moves in, (even though they are shared responsibility), with a 6foot completely non see-through one as our gardens are so overlooked and I yearn for privacy. To the op - I wouldnt worry - you are leaving anyway!

thirtypence · 06/08/2009 21:13

Look at it this way - it's better people buy the house they know they are getting - ie one with a new fence and no climbing stuff - than buy into a beautiful secret garden type affair that has mysteriously disappeared by completion.

Pannacotta · 06/08/2009 21:23

From your pics you take your gardening seriously, looks lovely.
I woudl sreiously think about digging up and taking the climbers with you, though if you can wait till autumn so much the better.
