I don't think so either. My 4 yr old has always said penis. I'm thinking of going with vulva with my almost 20 month old rather than vagina as we'll usually be talking about the external bits. Haven't finally decided though.

I was told off by an adult on mumsnet recently for calling my breasts "breasts" and a penis a "penis". APparently I should be calling them "tits" and "cock"!Seriously!

Nothing wrong with it at all. But IMO there is nothing wrong with them calling them other things either.

I think its fine if parents call them willies and minnies if they want.

I think it's fine. My 3year old calls it vagina and penis, as me and DH taught her.

My friends taught her daughter that a vagina was called a twinkle. Since that, her daughter pulls a really confused face when we sing twinkle twinkle little star!

Parents agreed on a new SOW at school, teachers agreed but wanted the wording to be "age appropraite langauge" to label body parts. Now the Year 1 teacher has refussed to teach any of it as she thinks its gross!

It was a aibu - something along the lines of"blood boils etc etc". It was a breastfeeding one and the other poster thought it was wrong to bf a child older than an 18 month old.

My daughter (2.5) calls hers a foofoo, and her baby brothers a winkie. No reason, just sounded a bit 'clinical' to be official. I dont even use proper names, breasts are boobs, and penis is willy/dick, just because thats what my parents called them, so Ive kinda grown up around slang. And for some totally weird reason I feel more comfortable with slang, though Im virtually impossible to embarrass! I really dont think its a big issue either way.

I would be seriously annoyed if my childrens teachers didn't use the right words for teaching body parts.

Front bottom and back bottom sound quite ridiculous imho.

It's best described as a vulva and should be known as such.
Why people get so embarrassed about using the correct term I've no idea.

Its not embarrassment as such, vulva just sounds so...vulgar coming from a toddler! My little one used to get nappy rash badly, and I cant imagine her toddling around, holding her bits, complaining about her sore vulva!

I don't think it sounds at all vulgar even coming from a toddler. The 'cutesy' terms for it sound far more vulgar to my ears than the correct term does.
