to get really annoyed at people saying my ds should be potty training by now??

It's making me so sad, i feel like throwing the potty at them.

My ds is 17 mo. He really wouldn't last without a nappy. He has only been walking 3 months and he just seems so young. But he is my pfb so what do i know??

MIL started when he was 6 months, saying if he can sit unaided he can use a potty.

Now my own mum is at it. She says she had us potty trained at 18 months and i am going to make problems for myself.

My dn (sisters daughter) was potty training now, and did it with great success. She could also walk at 9mo, talk at 10mo etc, and that is all i am hearing.

It upsets me because it feels like they are putting ds and myself down. I avoid visiting them just because of the comments now.

My DD is 2yrs 9mths and still in nappies. DS same age has only been toilet trained since easter. IMO 17mths is far too early to be even thinking about it.

Go ahead and throw the potty at them

Ignore. They will do it when they are ready. If you push them too soon it will just take too long and be a nightmare for you both. 17 months is still very young. I am only just starting now with DD1 and letting her take the lead. Everyone is out of nappies eventually.

It all depends on when they're ready, tell your MIL to take a hike.

mums in the old days were over-eager to potty train because they had terry nappies to wash, often without decent washing machine.
18 months is at the early end of the normal spectrum now, I think.

Tell your MIL and mum that.

Having said that, if theres a nice sunny day you can try letting DS play in the garden nappyless with a potty available, he might take to it.

Whatever you do dont stress yourself or him about it!

In fact, baffle them with made up science, eg 'the American Journal of Baby and Toddler Development suggest that it is detrimental to their psycho-social development to potty train before 2 1/2 yrs'. Tell them you can't believe that they would suggest something so potentially detrimental

YANBU - (v excited never used this acronym before!) 17months would be on the very young side of the spectrum for what is normal IMO (Cool another acronym) It seems that generally potty training is occurring later and later so perhaps we were all trained younger. FWIW ? (strike three) DS 2.5 and was painless and DD currently 18months and not even thinking about it yet ? although she is more aware and will fetch new nappies etc when she feels she would like a change.
Ask MIL what scary / strange thoughts her MIL had on child rearing to perhaps give her some perspective.

Just seems such a stress. If he has no nappy on he will just pee over his feet without so much as a blink. lol h would probably use a potty as a hat.

I thinks its too young to start,especially with a boy.Dgs is 2.8 and dd is wondering if she started too early[2.5]

far too early-- DD1 was 2.8, DD2 a bit earlier, around 2.6 but she was at full time nursery. dd3 is 19 months and would have no idea. i had 3 failed attempts with DD1 and vowed that i would never try again before 2 and a half. life is just too short.

What kind of noodles are saying that?!!! DS is 27 months and nowhere near ready for potty training. Sheesh!

17 months is way too early to even attempt toilet training! YANBU at all.

17mths is very young - yes a few are pt by then, but the average age is between 2 and 3

as long as out of nappies by school then i wouldnt worry

when the child is ready, you will be able to pt in a week or 2

Shame because what are they trying to prove? That my sis and myself were potty trained before ds therefore we are better? Or is it that they are better at parenting than me?

My DD asked for knickers at 17 months but that is very early.

DS2 was dry at 3 and a bit and DS2 was dry at 2 1/2 in 3 days. If you time it right it shouldn't take much time but 17 months is still baby time.

My HV always says to me "(dd) dry at night yet?" as though it goes without saying that she is trained during the day. She is 2.8. I just say "No" stonily.

She will do it when she is ready, just like ds did. One day he asked me what the Winnie the Pooh toilet seat was for I told him, he used and never wore a nappy during the day again, dry at night two weeks later. So there! (to HV not OP).

Ds1 was PT at 16/17m ds2 however is 20m and nowhere near ready to even attempt it!
mind you i don't mind i love his cloth bottom!!!!

DD potty trained very shortly before her third birthday and got the hang of it really quickly. I just used to say, very calmly, "We'll do it when she's ready thanks", and mutter afterwards. Hang in there.

Just because a child is in pants does not mean they are potty trained.

My son was potty trained at 3 years and 3 months. He cracked it both day and night in about 8 days. After that he only had a handful of accidents.

17 months! YANBU - at that age they should be putting the potty on their heads and wearing it as a hat!
Let him play with the potty for another six months at least before you give it another thought.
If you do it at the right time - when they want to, not you or anyone else, potty training only takes 2 or 3 days. Do it when they're not ready and you'll be mopping up puddles and putting on 6 pairs of trousers per day for weeks.

my DS is exactly the same age - I've mananaged to shut everyone up by telling them I've planned exactly when i'm going to try the first time - next summer when he will be 2 1/2 and it will be warm enough again - he's too young now and it will be too cold soon so I reckon that buys me a year

Never listen to what other people say. They are usually talking crap. My dd2 is 26 months and I have only started. They all get to the same stage at some point. Go with the flow (pardon the pun!!)
