Im sori I dnt actually speak like that but being a student and a normal 24yr old who admittitly is addicted to her Phone i do lapse and more often than not revert to forgetting to add a letter to make my words complete. I do not deem this as lazy nor ignorant and i dnt feel that my abbreviations are that different from using DS, DH and FIL on here. I have been told that to use such 'txt spk' or to not write my words completley i will be hated on mumsnet. So am i being unreasonable if i forget my stupid letters?? Think bloody not! Ps, am crap at spelling, does mean im thick though does it

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 16/06/2009 18:54

would not surprise me in the slightest!!!

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 18:57

qually - all good points, I agree.

Psycho - While I'm very aware that a lot of people on the internet are not who they say they are, that is not the case with Hail. I spoke to her on the phone last night, her DS and my DD spoke to each other on the phone this morning.

I haven't actually met her face to face, no.
But this is being arranged as she doesn't live too far from me.

And I've been through enough in my life to not allow myself to get taken for a ride.
(hopefully!)

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 19:03

OU forums are only accessible to OU students - when you do a course, you get access to a forum specifically for that course.

In there you can discuss your studies, get study support, ask questions etc. There are advisors who moderate and answer questions about all aspects of the course.

There are also general forums.

psychomum5 · 16/06/2009 19:05

well, let me warn you a little.....I was sucked in by a troll, and we spoke, and met, and she turned out to be seriously disturbed after I had given her all my home details and children details.

PLEASE take care.....she might be completely ok, and just thought we would take this as funny, but equaly, she might be the type that terrified me.

I would never ever ever wish what happened to me on someone else.

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 19:10

"I would never ever ever wish what happened to me on someone else."

Of course not psycho, I understand now why you're extra careful with things like this.

However, I do believe she is genuine.

But, I will obviously be careful as ever

psychomum5 · 16/06/2009 19:12

tis ok then

but yeah, take care. was bad going thru it, and still not completely ok (very paraniod me).....hence the troll-dar being primed....

abermum · 16/06/2009 19:20

LMAO!!

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 19:28

physcho - what CB says is correct the forums that we use for our OU course (K101 - which by the way is a Level 1 course with a broad introduction to the world of care in both health and social settings and can be used for points a variety of degrees not all social ) is only accessible by those doing the course.

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 19:29

oh yea and the moderators are WAYYYYYY over the top - can't talk about anything without getting your fingers rapped

duchesse · 16/06/2009 19:29

Responding to OP only- txt spk hrt my hed and I tend to skim over any posts that are unpunctuated, poorly spelled or in one massive block of text. Life's too short to spend time trying to decipher stuff if when you get to the end you find it was tripe anyway. So, OP, if you want to be taken seriously here, and have people read your posts, I recommend not using txt spk.

psychomum5 · 16/06/2009 19:55

faq, maybe they need to train some of us here at the moment......might prevent some of the trollness!

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 19:58

oh no it's awful, it really really is. I mean it puts even Babyworld moderating to shame LOL.

BionicleBill · 16/06/2009 20:55

Do you think we need a proper registration? I know it'd create shedloads of work for the powers that be, but it might deter the loonies a bit to have to give a genuine phone number, address etc. Not sure how but there are far more stringent forum rules elsewhere.

Just a thought.

juneybean · 16/06/2009 20:57

Ugh I hate the OU forums lol

"but being a student and a normal 24yr old"

I'm 23 and I manage to talk properly.

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 21:01

juney - they're awful aren't they.

I only post on them as for K101 we can get a few extra marks towards each TMA for posting on them LOL.

morningpaper · 16/06/2009 21:01

Oooh can I say (without reading the thread)

That text speak is REALLY BAD for people who are accessing the site with screen readers or other website accessibility tools

So it's just considerate to use proper language, so we can be as inclusive as possible

Stayingsunnygirl · 16/06/2009 21:06

HailStorm said:

"My post wasn't intended to be a troll post. It was from wonderment and a general interest in the workings and the ways people interact... My studying interests me so to me it doesn't stop when i close the book..."

You wanted to see what would happen if you posted a deliberately provocative post - because studying doesn't stop when you close the book - that sounds awfully like a social experiment to me, HailStorm - albeit not one formally set by your tutors.

You were treating us as something to be studied or investigated - and you don't see anything wrong in such manipulative behaviour?

I suspect you will find it hard to persuade most people to trust you from now on.

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 21:06

indeed MP - a point I usually make but I was so stunned that someone I recommended MN to had actually joined that I forgot to say it .

And OP........you know we've also been learning about services that are inaccessible to some people haven't we.............

junglist1 · 16/06/2009 21:10

Kicked off then did it? My personal opinion is that I speak very differently to how I write, I sound like a screechy chav (seriously) but due to reading A LOT from childhood onwards I'm able to write very eloquently. The "posher" mums at school couldn't hide their surprise when they found out I was doing a degree, which I found funny rather than insulting, because I'm confident in myself and my working class identity. I believe there's no reason why the OP shouldn't get high marks at uni because she uses text speak.

SoupDragon · 16/06/2009 21:13

"I believe there's no reason why the OP shouldn't get high marks at uni because she uses text speak. "

Unless she's fuckwitted dimwitted enough to use it in exams/work

junglist1 · 16/06/2009 21:28

Of course! But nobody would surely (saying that though, theres been some almighty cock ups in recent exams at my uni, one bloke answered a question on conformity with everything he knew about prejudice reduction!!)

QuintessentialShadow · 16/06/2009 21:34

Nothing more full of themselves and "know-it-all" than first year students who think that just because they have managed to accumulate some knowledge, they are clever as apeshit, and more intellectual than most!

Good luck with your course.

As you learn, you will mature, and you might in years to come look back on this thread and groan with embarassment.

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 21:36

"Nothing more full of themselves and "know-it-all" than first year students who think that just because they have managed to accumulate some knowledge"

oh pee off - actually I've found I've acquired very little knowledge so far................as most of it I discovered I already knew (still can't write essays but that's another point LOL)

Claire2009 · 16/06/2009 21:37

So, you're 24yo & because you're a student you use text speak?

I'm 24yo, not a student, a Mum to two, but I don't use text speak? All is well using it on a phone, but when typing I find it hard to read/let alone try to write it!

QuintessentialShadow · 16/06/2009 21:38

But FAQ, you have credentials here, we know you for years, of well thougth through and considered posts. You are lightyears away from this pair, I dont paint you with the same brush at all!
